No Skill Cap? What the hell it means?

EridanixEridanix Member Posts: 426

Well, i have read a lot of times in these forums that there is no skill cap and i wonder if it means that you can raise a skill indefinitely to 450 or whatever if you are such a grindcore gamer, or does it means that you can raise all skills?

I'm thinking seriously in joining DF and would like to know....

Thanks in advance.

It is a question of fangs.

No. All of the skills cap at 100. No skill cap for this game means, that there is no limit on how many skills you are able to learn in the game. You can basically be a jack of all trades in every aspect of the game.

Then you can train magic & melee skills? Sounds great. I like crafting, i hope is good. But to catch up the vets can be a very problem.

Yup. Melee, Archery, and Magic. Crafting is pretty fun in the game, it's not very interactive, but there's a lot of things you can make. Harvesting the necessary ingredients for your recipes will be the problem. It takes a lot of resources for later things, which means more time harvesting nodes, which will then mean more chances of someone coming upon you and killing you while you harvest.

It will also take you a few months to catch up with vets, depending on your play schedule, but don't worry about that. Enjoy your journey, take your time to develope your character however you want to play him/her and just enjoy the ride. Don't get discouraged when you get ganked and all of your stuff is gone. Almost everything in the game is craftable, and can easily be replaced.

If you're convinced in trying the game out, try the $1 trial first to make sure. Get on youtube and look up the "Accelerated Character Developement" videos by Valroth(there are 4 currently, here is the link)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDgGgunLhmA

They will give great advice on how to get your character started in the game and have you set with plenty of back up gear, and gold coins to help you on doing whatever you want to do after what the video's tell you are over.

This forum has a lot of DF fans, so do not hesitate to come here for questions. You'll be met with eager players with answers. Good luck!

It means that everyone will eventually be a tank/mage/archer and you will be at a severe disadvantage if you don't have all of those abilities trained up well. It will take a very long time to master all three and meanwhile the vets have a very large head start on you. This is why the absense of a skill cap is a problem.

Since everyone can train EVERYTHING, they inevitably will... and since it takes basically years to master all skills in the game, a newer player will essentially never catch up with a veteran. It is basically impossible unless the vet plays significantly less.

You can't be mage and tank at same time. They want to introduce armor that will boost archery, besides even now you can't be archer/tank.

No skill cap means you will not likely catch up wets, but on other hand you will not be using 30 maxed skills in one battle. Specialization is key. OP plays EVE, he understand this design.

one major stat that doesn't have a cap is health so you can continue gaining hp forever in this game. this is were you will be at a disadvantage in a 1vs1 against a  veteran.

the best thing with DF is not to worry about catching up to the vets, just enojoythe game and all it has to offer. stats and skill will progress naturaly as you play. you can still partake in all pvp, sieges, raid parties and everything DF has to offer it just means that it will take more of you to kill 1 of the opposition's vets. numbers are always advantageous. good luck.

HP is capped at 450 from what I know... with not maxed stats, some buffs from buddies and bloodcrafted armor with VIT enchant you can have around 400+ HP

    EDIT:
Maximum hp is toughtness skills (+10 @100), some racial skills( +5 @100) and vit,str stats which are also capped.

hmm... thats strange since I have seen almost every player switching between the three on a regular basis.

Do you know what encumbrance is and how it effect dmg/casting time? Sure, you can run around in full plate casting nukes but you will get owned pretty fast even by newbs that know what they are doing.

melee types will switch to staff to heal / transfer. Mage types will often switch to melee when someone closes to melee range.

Yet the melee types cannot effectively use "real" spells in combat, due to armor encumberance, and most often either Destroyer or Invincible spec, which locks out most of the major magic schools.

And the Mage types aren't really as effective in melee combat, due to paper-thin bone armor, and lack of advantages granted by speccing pure melee.

You're not going to see a guy in infernal armor spamming fireballs and then pwning with a keened r60 in melee a moment later.

The spec system will be seeing a major overhaul this year, and I'm thinking that we will see even more diversity in character templates and styles as a result.

So...while you can LEARN all the skills, you can't use them all at all times.

This give a player great versatility, though....you're not locked into a class at all. All you have to do is pay a few thousand gold to switch specs, toss on a different set of gear, and you can change the way you play the game, and your role in groups.

It has the POTENTIAL to be a good system, once it's properly developed and fleshed out from the rudimentary system that's in place now.

DF isnt about "catching up to vets". Its about taking your time and enjoying the journey in one of the biggest online gaming worlds out right now. For those that have turned DF into a grind I truly feel sorry for them because their missing out on alot...the biggest things being building friendships with people you meet in the world and going out pawning reds in small groups!

Just last night I had THE most fun I've had in my 5+ years of playing MMORPGs. The ones that turn an awesome game such as Darkfall into a "grind..." are the same ones who biatch and whine constantly on these forums. What a shame...lol. Hope you all enjoy your 2nd job...while I play it up with real life my first priority! :-)

EDIT: I've also come to realize that DF is very much a group focused MMO. For anyone considering running solo through Agon I would highly recommend you reconsider trying Darkfall. I've had two "solo type" friends who left recently because they got bored, while I joined an established clan and have been having a blast every night I play. Ventrilo is also almost a neccessity in Darkfall imo. So in general: If your planning to play Darkfall solo and don't enjoy grouping and/or socializing with others on ventrilo or through clan chat I would highly recommend you forget about Darkfall (All a matter of opition of course)

i would disagree only with what you say abotu solo playing. Its harder, yes, but there are still plenty of opportunities and things to do although not as much as most MMO's as a solo. As far as boring goes I think its about the same as any other MMO to be honest.

Although without group its really hard to experiement with magic at the level of debuffs and buff others becuase there are no others.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
