I think most of you know the hack & slash RPG Diablo 2. The problem is, if you want to play that game properly over the net, it's full with cheaters who are at lvl 99. I played it like a hundred times in single player and in LAN, but now I'm tired of it and cause the online play sucks (reason above) I'm in search of another hack & slash RPG. It has to have a multiplayer option, but it should be possible to play it alone over the net as well. I'd like to have the game, if possible, a bit in the same style as diablo 2: uplevelling, skill when levelled up, stats when levelled up etc.
So plz, post everything that pops up in your mind that could be helpful. (not WoW)
Cheers

Guild Wars, made by the people who left Blizzard after making diablo 2...due out in April. It doesnt have as much levelling (level 20 cap) and instead focuses on tactics, guilds and skills setup in PvP. No monthly fee but expansions will be released after launch (which will not be compulsory). With NPC hechmen available it is possible to solo some aspects, but as usual co-operative play is far easier.

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

Sacred!!!
In my opinion, Sacred is the best hack and slash that ever surfaced the earth!

Whooo... had a long post but it got lost when I hit "post message."
Anyway, I'll just cut to the end then.
I heard there's a demo for Sacred, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Would you happen to know where it is?

Sorry, but there are no MMORPGs that allow you to play alone over the internet. There is no Stand Alone mode in any mmorpg, like there is in all other ORPGs (Online Role Playing Games), like Diablo 2, etc... But there ARE other more modern games like Diablo 2 such as:
- Dungeon Siege - My friends and I have this game. It is one of the most phenominal games ever made. It is unofficially Diablo 3. They have also released Dungeon Siege Editor, which lets you 100% create your own game worlds! Dungeon Siege 2 is suppose to be released sometime 2005. The demo for Dungeon Siege is still FREE to download. It has about 1/20th of the game, but enough content to keep a hardcore gamer busy for 7 days, a casual gamer busy for 2 weeks.
- Neverwinter Nights - I have not played this. But it is successful, and has had many positive things said about it. Another modern ORPG. With online mode, and stand alone mode.
- Freelancer - My friends and I have this game too. It is a space based, sci-fi themed, game. Kind of like Diablo 2 in space. It is a successful game too, though it could have, should have, been marketed more aggressivly. Very HUGE game!
I am sure there are others, but I can't remember any more off the top of my head.
Another thing about Diablo 2, many. many, players spend real life money (hundreds of bucks!) buying in game items, which helps them get up to level 99 quicker, and safer. The same thing happens in all online games, including MMORPGs.
- Dungeon Siege - My friends and I have this game. It is one of the most phenominal games ever made. It is unofficially Diablo 3.
Excuse me! but DS has NOTHING whatsoever to do with D2!
D2, 1 char, DS group of chars
D2, skill tree, DS buyable skills
D2, u get skill and stat points per lvl which u can use wherever u want, DS u receive stat points according to what u do, none per lvl...
And many more, but im short on time

Played- Runescape, Conquer
Tested- EQ, RYL, Freeworld
Guild Wars I think will be a good D2 replacement. Obviously its an improvement in a number of ways (graphics, more quests, etc), but its kinda similar in a lot of ways too. For example, instead of a 'chat room' where you meet up to do different maps, its instead a town with a tavern, making it more immersive, instead of constantly being brought out of the experience by having to go to the chat room. You can then form a team and head out to different places.
CHAMPIONS: Return to Arms.
IMO, it could have been named Diablo 3, it is the natural evolution (like Galciv could have been named Master of Orion 3 rather then the screw up thing they bring).
Champions is nice, the game is great for hack and slash, you have 7 possibilities(12 if you include sex variations). It have mini games, which is a must IMO.
However, the stinck of SoE is starting to corrupt Snowblind and they limit a few things to groups only, damn, I hate when they do that! So even if Sacred is inferior, if you want to encourage folks that dont enforce lame stuff on you, you may consider Sacred over a superior game.
Guild War would be a good choice, yet, I doubt you kill monsters in 1 hit ever there, it is not a pure hack & slash if you cant kill mobs in 1 hit IMO. Also, Guild War enforce grouping on you, so it is not the evolution of D2 in any form with this feature alone.

Many thanks for all these good replies. I'll try to find a demo of sacred, nox and champions: brother in arms. I'll also try to find some more info about biosfear, guildwars and neverwinter nights. I played the dungeon siege demo already, and it wasn't really my style. I have freelancer myself. It is a very good game, very well situated (cool planets, to bad it's somewhat repetitive in environments), cool graphics etc. But IMO the single player is better than the multiplayer (although I only played it multiplayer on LAN), and I played the missions thousands of times.
Here are my reactions on your reactions :
Didn't knew that, srry for the mistake ^^ hmmm... I must admit I didn't gave it much tries. But I was looking for a character around the same type of level, and in like the 7 servers I entered there were always only lvl 99 players. And about WoW: I played the beta. It's a good game on all fields, but it misses the "X-factor" IMO. The world is huge, the grapics aren't overwhelming but more than good enough. It's very addictive, has lots of quests, ... But after the beta I still had the feeling I saw it all (which was definitly wrong, but I had this "feeling")
Again: these answers are very much appreciated. Any more suggestions, or corrections, are more than welcome

Bah, I don't know about FF, I think it's a gg but I played FF VII but I didn't liked the combat system. It took to darn long to make shiva appear and do her things . And I hated the part of not being able to save where you want. I don't know if it's still like that, though.

http://www.mir3europe.com <-- diablo 2 type game, Very similar graphics, but with many more players, has gameguard so no lvl 99 hax0rs. Its a great game. a few bugs but nothing major, oh and there is a 14 day free trial, so wont hurt to go take a look either. If your on there look me up on Ignis server as Optimus.
I'll do that, thnx Blade.
I just played the demo of Sacred BTW. And although I had fun playing it, I do not think that it would be good enough to replace Diablo 2. It went a bit slow IMO... But I'll play it some more and I'll see if my opinion changes.
About nox, this is what I found on gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/nox/review.html

It is true in D2 you get an exact number of stat and skill points every level. Then you can either save them, or spend them on whatever skill and stats only your particular character can learn. (Barbarian has "whirlwind" but other characters don't, for example.) In D2 even if you use a spear, you can choose to never level up your spear skills, and instead level up some other skill.
In DS you are only partially correct. You do get stat and skill points based on what you do. But you choose what you do. For example, if you want to level up sword skill, you equip your sword. If you want to level up lightning magic, you use lightning magic. DS basically cuts to the chase, and is more realistic than D2.
In both D2 and DS you get a certain amount of experience per level. D2 shows the exact numbers. DS does not. In D2 if you want to go from level 4 to level 5, you have to first get the needed amount of experience aka go do something aka kill. The exact numbers are shown. A certain amount of experience is needed. In DS if you want to increase in level you have to first get the needed amount of experience aka go do something aka kill - but the numbers are not shown, even though a certain amount of experience is needed.
The way items are worn, put on, equipped, is exactly the same in both games. The way inventory works is absolutly exact in both games. Dungeon Siege is newer, more modern, so it has built on what is in Diablo 2. For example in D2 if you drink a potion, you automatically drink all of it, no matter if you have 10% health, or 99% health. In DS if you drink a potion, you realistically drink it until you are healed. If you have 99% health, your character will sip a tiny bit of the potion, leaving the potion bottle near full.
DS made NPC helpers far more intelligent than the NPC helpers in D2 (to this day the helpers in D2 still have 0 intelligence - regularly getting killed for the dumbest reasons. If you give them a bow, they run up within melee range of a monster. If you give them a sword, they run ahead of you, pulling a train of monsters to where you are LOL! Or sometimes they stay far back in ranged distance while you're getting hurt meleeing. Sometimes even opening doors you leave close! Letting armies of monsters come through the door!)
If an official Diablo 3 were ever made, it would be Dungeon Siege, because it is a modern, updated, version of Diablo 2, which built on the ideas in Diablo 2, and made them even better. (Best example is what they did with player NPC helpers compared to the helpers in D2.) Until an official D3 is made, Dungeon Siege is unofficially D3.
Part of the fun in D2 is getting on a server with much higher level players. You gain experience far quicker. But if you want players around the same level as you, all you have to do is click 1 time on whatever the server name is. Info will appear telling you the exact level of all the players playing on that server. You can do this for all the servers you see before you join them.
You can also make your own server. In the server creation options, you can decide what level players can join you on the server you make.
You said you didn't make much effort to try Diablo 2 in online mode. You should give it another try, it is incredibly fun. Especially when a group of players work together to clear a dungeon, help someone in a quest, take out underlings, and even take out the bosses!
i would strongly recommend neverrighter nights it is a really good game and lots of good hype about this game and another game that i would lean you to look forward to is face of mankind which is a sci fi mmorpg with no sinlge player elements, though the graphics arent the best but the gameplay is what draws the attention to it such things as faction wars and military attacking terrorists, and mercenaries constantly looking for an assaanation attempt on a local politician or corrupt police officer, the playable factions here are:
Eurocore, Asian Colition, Mercinaries, Brotherhood of the Shadows, Led(police), FDC(military), and several other that i cannot come to think of right now....
the faction wars is not the only part of the game worth playing, but there are producton terminals where one can process ones own weapons, armor, drugs, and nanotechnology
there is a pretty good economy system as well for selling your items, it is a pretty straight forward system for begginers and more compicated as you go along trying to earn your living as a production specialist
to make a long story short is your looking for a good clan based, war, drug dealing, gambling, assaination, production hell of a time check out face of mankind.
I will give it another try. Thanks for the info about DS as well, I think I'll give that another try as well. But the one thing I disturbed me the last time I played it were the few enemy's you could handle. In D2, you can easily kill out an entire army, but not in DS. Maybe that makes it more realistic, but I'm not searching for a realistic game . Anyway, many thanks again for all these long replies.
Some screenshots of Dungeon Siege, as well as other games....
