MMO Survey

KracsNZKracsNZ Member UncommonPosts: 8

Hi folks,

I'm currently doing my masters degree and would appreciate is some members of this MMORPG.com community could take the time to complete a small survey.

The paper is Impact of ICT on Society and the topic is The Impact of Massively Multiplayer Games on Teenagers and Young Adults.

If you could be so kind please go to http://www.mr-kiwi.com/survey.aspx and complete the survey.

If you have any errors with the service please don't hesitate to PM me.

Much appreciated.

Mark.

To the forum mods. I did read the TOS / guidelines for the forums so hopefully I'm not breaking the rules by posting this here. Ten Tonne Hammer locked my thread and removed my survey link due to rules I missed in their TOS.

I know I'm only a new member so please let me know if I am doing anything wrong i.e. if I have to request permission to run the survey.

    Thanks again.

    Mark.

I took the survey. It's pretty easy ... and short!

  • KracsNZKracsNZ Member UncommonPosts: 8

Yes, excatly lol. If anyone is like me, answering anymore than a handful of questions without incentive becomes very tiresome.

And thankyou for taking the survey,

    Much appreciated.

Filled out the survey, it took me 30 seconds, no one has any excuse not to do it.

Yeah, except for the fact that some random person from somewhere in the world randomly posting on a forum, wants you to confirm an email address.

I just used my spam-magnet Hotmail address. Seriously, you don't have to put in your business e-mail address. There are a million ways to get a free e-mail address.

    Hello KracsNZ!

First we have some questions for you.

    What is your major?

Why have you chosen this topic in your own personal opinion over other potential topics?

What MMORPG experience do you have? Games played? For how long? Why did you choose the game you played over the other potentials?

What is the conclusion you wish to reach with this paper?

What is your personal opinion on the effects of MMORPG's on teenagers and adults?

Answer mine and I'll be happy to answer yours!

Thanks and welcome to the community!

Probably to confirm its a real person taking a survey rather than a bot.

Also, since when did e-mail addresses become so sacred that you can't give them out anywhere? Here, use one of these and sign up for a freee e-mail address that you won't mind getting spam sent to. Hint: don't use any of your real life details: http://www.hotmail.com/, http://mail.google.com/, http://mail.yahoo.com, http://www.mail.com/, http://www.hushmail.com/. Now you can go wild signing up to any website you want and providing your e-mail address without fear.

Computing - Masters of Computing, UNITEC in New Zealand

Personal interest and experience. I've been an MMO gamer since DSO and gaming in general since the early 80's. IT Manager and progammer by trade.

What MMORPG experience do you have? Games played? For how long? Why did you choose the game you played over the other potentials?

DSO, UO, EQ, Shodowbane, WoW, WAR, CoX, AO, E&B, AoC, DAoC, Horizons and beta for AC2, CO, FE (not in any particular order and I think I'm missing a few). EQ and WoW were longest played, several years in EQ, a couple in WoW.

What is the conclusion you wish to reach with this paper?

At the moment I'm in the early stage of collecting research. But in general will be looking at the positive and negative effects of MMOs. This specific survey is simply to qualify or exclude certain psychology papers already available on the subject.

What is your personal opinion on the effects of MMORPG's on teenagers and adults?

As a long time gamer I love them :). Though I'm currently not playing any (focusing on work and my masters) I'm quietly anticipating SWTOR and possibly Secret World. I don't want to get too into a discussion here but I do believe there are risks (as in any activity), but there are also equal if not greater benefits. It will be hard for me to bipass my personal bias.

Answer mine and I'll be happy to answer yours!

    Done

Thanks and welcome to the community!

    Thankyou :)

Hi guys. I perfectly understand your hesitation. I had a similar response at Ten Tonne Hammer and hold no grudge for their decision to block my survey.

If you feel uneasy then no worries. I perfectly understand peoples hesitation at unknown posters posting links to foreign websites (drive-by-downloads, code exploits etc...).

The reason for the email collection in the first place was simply to qualify the results i.e. single entry by one real person (granted there are many ways to get around that but it was at least a try at validation).

And thankyou to everyone who has answered. Much appreciated.

And thankyou MMORPG.com for allowing the survey to continue :)

    Heh folks,

Thanks to everyone who took the time to be a part of the survey.

    Much appreciated. Mark.

Please note that I have read in more than one place online that the average age of a gamer is around 34 years old. I would quetion the un-baised motovations of studying the impact of games on teenagers although it might be 100% fine.

I guess what I am saying is that most studies around games seem to be biased and not well performed.

perfect example would be a study that suggest games are socially isolating while the gamer is playing in a clan of 50 all of whom are on vent every night.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Please do not respond to me
