One thing I can honestly say is seeing the original Star Wars at the drive in with my mother and her boyfriend is my earliest memory that I have as a kid. (Yeah I am old lol 1977 is when it came out) That movie has probably influenced my life in many ways. I love the books, I love the games and I am looking forward to the new game to play.
Actually I'll jut wait until the game is released.
a) Playing during beta will spoil the fun later on.
b) Even if some people think that a beta is some kind of free trial, it is rather intended to locate and find software bugs and hardware limits. At such a late stage of the project life cycle it's hard or nearly impossible to change fundamental game mechanics (without delaying/postponing the release date).
c) it's unpaid labour. ,)
d) testing software from the view point of a user (treating the software as a blackbox) to find bugs is real work. It's time consuming and requires testers to think out of the box and try things developers didn't anticipate.
Part of the problem I have with gamers testing in beta is the fact they aren't going to be even testing the game. They just going to play the game, rush to max level and form opinion on an unfinished product.
I have always thought the problem was people who got into beta with the mind set of it being a free trial. They encounter bugs, say the games horrible, while not knowing what beta is for.
If you log on, you're the best tester. That's all that's really required. The diagnostic software does the rest. I don't know why people have this notion they are special, or good beta testers, or the best beta testers when all the Devs really need you to do in beta is play, so you will generate statistics.
Why does everyone think the developers are waiting breathlessly for their personal bug reports? I guess so they can feel important, but in reality the guy playing the game just because he wants a free game, and the guy that reports bugs every 2 seconds, are providing just as much value to the developers.
But doesn't it make sense that the guy who tries to break the game and see what happens (to uncover possible exploits, hidden bugs, etc.) is a "better" tester than the guy who runs around and logs off after 30 minutes because of the lag? I'd like to think so /shrug. I guess from a stastical point of view, both are equal, but from a quality point of view, they're not.
I don't care if this game ends up being more like a single player game than an MMO, it's guaranteed to be awesome.
Though I can understand not wanting to be in the beta just so you don't get tired of it and sick of the pre release issues and decide you don't want to play it. But I'd love a chance, not just to play the game early, but to help (what small amount you could) in helping to get it ready for launch and making suggestions to improve it.
Yes for alpha that's very important. But by the time you get to Beta, the best tester is the one that logs in. Period. But some beta players like to think they are superior "testers" and the other players are just noobs.
Pretty much the same as in the game when it goes live. Then they aren't superior "tester" they are superior players, and the other guys are noobs.
Have you ever seen developers complain about the quailty of Beta testers, or that beta testers don't take their "job" seriosly enough? No, because all they need is for the people to log in, so they can compile stastics, and tweak the game.
How many hours played for a healer to level versus a Tank? Look up the stastics. What's DPS on the Smuggler class versus the Counselor class? Look up the stastics.
Bashing people for just "playing" a Beta and not taking it serious enough is just sillyness.

Thats my second earliest memory. My first being seeing my mother in labour with my sister. I remember watching it in the drive through in the early 80's with my mom, dad and sister. I was only about 6 or 7 at the time and I loved it from the moment the horns first started during the opening sequence. Its been a life long love, almost litterally. I used to dream about Luke Skywalker and being a Jedi when I was a kid. Heck, I have a lightsaber sitting on a stand in my living room. It was the one thing I couldn't leave Dragon Con without last year.
However, they kind of... blew it with SWG when the NGE hit, so I'm holding my breath. Of course, it helps that my favorite game series is the KOTOR series and Bioware is my favorite game company. But even then... just so long as its good. I really hope they don't screw this up, but its possible that they will.
Unlike some others on here, I'm willing to actually give them a chance to prove themselves. I won't doomsay and I won't glorify it. I WILL hold my breath until it arrives and they prove themselves.
Just waiting for them to get it right and not screw it up.
STO had the worst beta ever. Not because the game was unplayable, but because it was very poorly directed.
- For 90% of the beta period, you could only test in 2 weekly sessions of 2 hours each
- A lot of the content at release didn't get to be tested until like a week from release (i.e. the whole Klingon half)
- The game that testers tested and provided feedback on for months was completely changed in the last 2 or 3 weeks of testing with 2 huge swoops, the 'god mode' change (destroying any challenge) and the switch from uncapped to capped skill points.
Hopefully TOR developers know better or can learn from the mistakes of STO.
BioWare has very good in-house testers already, way better than the generic mouth foaming "must-have-beta" people that plays the game rather than you know what. They have pro's to speak of at testing.

But how many MMOs have Bioware done? They know how to test single player games, but many if not most of the problems and bugs in MMOs are from the 'online' part, i.e., load related bugs, memory leaks (that depend on # of people connected and/or length of time the server has been up), transactions, balance (if a power is too powerful in a single player game, the NPCs won't complain, but use the power against another human being and it will be immediately reported), power combinations (powers/items that alone are ok, but combined are broken). Also, there are just so many computer configurations they can test in-house; there are many bugs that only happen in certain hardware/software/versions. There's also the lag issue. When testing in-house, with just a few people, there is no lag, but load the server with 2500 connections and major problems may surface (and no, server load 'simulators' won't help here)
Besides that, there's also the issue of things that look good on paper, but when translated to gameplay are not good (boring, etc). That's feedback you want from those who potentially will buy the product.

Nope, not really. I don't even plan on buying or playing the game.
Then why would you comment on this forum?
Because he was answering the thread title question!
F..yes, I'd kill to play the beta.
"If all you can say is... "It's awful, it's not innovative, it's ugly, it's blah.." Then you're an unimaginative and unpolished excuse for human life" -eburn
Me, no I wouldn't, though it would be a test of my will not to.
This is a personal reason because every BioWare story game for me is like a ride. I prefer it new, unheard of. I don't even watch more than one gameplay showing. I don't look for beta footage either. I can't wait for my turn at a story following the aftermath of Revan and the jedi civil war, but wait I shall. It'll make it much more 'magical' when it does happen.
Longing for Skyrim, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3
I know it's hard to stay patient but for people who are both worried about having the game spoiled by playing a buggy beta as well as being worried about not being able to 'try before you buy' the best solution is to simply wait 3 months after release. This will give you plenty of time to research reviews and allow the game to iron out early bugs and other release shennanigans.

It's only 50 bucks. I think you'll get 50 bucks worth of entertainment, no matter what, so not a huge risk in buying the box on day one, IMO.
UNLESS, it's so buggy, like the Vanguard release, that it barely plays nad crashes all the time. But I kinda doubt that's going to be the case.
I voted no..I've learned to not get to crazy excited about games before they are released. Im patient, if the game is good it will show no sense in playing in beta unless you are interested in finding bugs and problems.
Do you want to play the Beta? I am very interested in this game. I'd really like to give it a whorl and see if it's fun. However, I do not want to play the Beta, spcifically because I'm hoping it will be a good game.
I've played in a few betas, Shadowbane, LOTRO, Vanguard, among others.
For me, it sort of spoils the game. I don't want to know what the quests are, or to have seen the world, before it goes live and I start working on my character.
I know for some, they like to be in Beta, so they know the quests by heart, and where to go, what to do, so when the servers go live they can quickly build their character faster than anyone else.
But I think that makes the game kinda stale. I'd rather start when it's all fresh, if you know what I mean.
I would like to "test" the game not play the game as you put it,free rides are that way --------->
I'm just wondering how many of you who supposedly don't want to be in the beta have their applications in and eagerly check your email every morning. (Much like I do... lol)
Looking forward to playing the game, but I have no interest in testing it. I personally wish these companies would pay a professional team to test it . That way we know that the people in BETA are there to actually test it.Opening it up to the general public does nothing except draw in the people with an agenda on their minds.

I would LOVE to do beta for this game.

Really looking forward to this one. I would play whatever I can get my hands on.
