OnLive is set to release on June 17th, 2010, how is that a long way off? Some people can't even wait two and a bit months for stuff... Talk about impatient.
Cloud technology will never be acceptable for real gaming. You really think any company could afford to have 100,000 machines capable of graphics output like home users have, that then streams it back to your computer? Ever? Not unless they want to charge you 50+ dollars a month to play it. It simply isn't economically feasible. That's why the graphics on any games that try it will be poor. Good for a browser perhaps, but not up to the standard of real gamers.
You'll notice I've used the word 'real' twice now. Real gamers like modern warfare 2 and dragon age, and fallout 3. Maybe not all such games, but most of them. Web gamers like farmville and pet society. You can appeal to the latter, but it's doubtful you'll make a profit from it.
Cloud computing it just a gimmick. Remote accessing your own hardware over the internet is feasible someday though, but don't call that cloud computing, because it's been around forever.
But that's not the only stumbling block. Aside from requiring hosts of said games to supply hardware capable of processing graphics and sound for every single connected browser, there's the matter of net congestion, ping times, and bandwidth usage. It's quite likely america will eventually have it's ISPs switch to a limited bandwidth system, and ping times are as fast as they will ever be without us fully switched over to fiber optics. The amount of data transmission needed is 10x what normal online games need due to the video and audio feeds. And lag will always be there, but it's the kind of lag players can't forgive, input lag.
If you had a fiber optic cable going from your computer to the game server, of course this wouldn't be an issue. But you don't. And you won't, for at least another decade, outside of maybe a very small percentage of the populous.
If you want to push some bullcrap sub-par golf game, that's fine, but it doesn't belong in the mmorpg world anymore than farmville does. Leave cloud computing slurping to the idiots on cnbc who think it must be the future so buy buy buy!!!
Still dont understand why www.smallworlds.com still hasnt been listed on this site, lets face it, all these other shitty web based games get listed and they are truely crap, at least smallworlds has sharable music, ingame art, room customisation etc etc.
Wow, that was amazing, but I have this idea to make it even better. If only there was a way we could take the main parts of the game engine, art assetts, textures etc, and then put all them on something, lets call it a DVD, and then we could install the contents from the DVD onto our home PC's. Just imagine the benefits, the reduced amount of network traffic required, not being at the mercy of ISP's and there bandwidth throttling. Imagine if we could play these games outside of a browser, in full screen, in the resolution we want, with the graphics options we want etc.
I guess we must be a few years of being able to do stuff like that though
There is a reason why browser games are either:
a) crap
or
b) for bored housewives and 'Casual' Wii owning people.
The reason is that by keeping everything server side you render real games unplayable. The technology simply is not readily available yet. Maybe in 10 or 20 years when we all have 500meg fibre broadband, with no download/upload limits etc, maybe then real 'Cloud' based gaming will be a reality, until then most people will be stuck with client based gaming. I personally prefer to run things from own PC and the longer they take to make this a reality the better as far as I'm concerned.
Been playing TWO for a couple months now and I really enjoy the game, though the progression system is way too fast, the customization is slim to none even with the 'pro shop' due to the fact that you can't see anyone else's players, and the community is full of foul mouthed reprobates with no apparent moderation.
Honestly Shot Online is as good if not better despite it's cash shop.
*cough* Though that has little to do with it's browser based nature, so probably isn't all that relevant...
1.) This technology is not new. I've seen extremely good looking browser games coming out of unity for a long time now. It doesn't look really awesome either. I mean it's pretty good, but it's not ultra super awesome or anything.
2.) This gameplay is not difficult at all. and I don't mean in terms of player difficulty. I mean all you do it decide what percentage of your power your want to hit is it at ad where to aim and then click twice to choose your accuracy. Most of the time making this was figuring out how to network in unity and replicate the courses, I'm sure.
I'm not saying it's not a good game or something cool to play, or even that it's not breaking ground in the industry (it is a little...kinda), but it's not something to gawk at either. I like the game, but it's not THAT revolutionary or new.
Earth Eternal is run in the browser. That's probably more impressive actually because it's an open world. And if we're arguing that point, runescape pre-dates all these. But I must say, the courses look a lot like their real life counterparts. I've played at pebble beach and it look exactly like that. It's kind of annoying that I'm better in real life than I am with my character though. :P
I can comment,since i don't like golf live or in a game,so i quit after 2 holes.
customization is possible for sure, but as of now there is none,so no AAA there,in it's current state not even AA.
Textures are low end, nothing to look realistic, example shirt doesn't move in wind,no moving grass, trees.Player doesn't breathe. No caddy ,no gold cart,he jus tmagically appears at each hole.
Really the game is nothing more than a stick man with a few different animations.Same club for each animation? No turning of the player or grips,it is all just pre rendered into your choices.
All in all it nothing close to a AAA,not even AA,just a boring browser game as expected.Even if it was something more to my liking than boring golf,i would still not play it ,even for free.Of course anything other than golf would take at least one more player if it was tennis, any other sport would need several animations, too much effort for a browser game, witch is why they chose a one man golf game.
You're unrealistic. Or rather, too realistic. If you can find an MMO that has clothing moving in changing winds please inform me, cause I want it. It's not trying to be a sim, cause that wouldn't be fun for most people. Also it would cost more. Also they want this to actually run on most computers. It's not about the realism or anything like that. this is almost like a fantasy golf game. With gameplay.
“Disturbingly (for developers), many players who try to download a client never actually end up playing the game, either because they quit the download after a bunch of hours, or simply weren’t as excited about it the next day when the download finished.”
They would also be the players who report nothing in beta and only play a new MMMO for a month before moving on to the next big thing. No big loss.
It is astoinishing that gaming companies are gearing up to deliver games of a low quality than they can achieve now just so we can download them quicker. But of course this is not the truth, the truth is they think they can reach a wider market with less development costs. It will be gaming by the lowest common denominator, wonderful.
After we all sign up, you can watch this space for when a staff/quest writer will tell us about the amazing explosion of players playing new generation broswer games. The fact you played one hole then dropped it will not be featured.
maybe the term "mmo" should be re-defined to include games such as Tiger Woods golf. It was enjoyable to play. Everyone looks the same. Character development is missing. There are no female characters to play. I thought there could have been more courses open up to you as you advanced in the game. Maybe that will all change with the release of the game.
I think its just a matter of time before you see John Maddens-Football game online.
I think Earth Eternal and Fusionfall are lot more impressive as browser MMOs.
But I think WoW trial is by far the best example of how streaming technology can be used. The initial download is really small, and only a fraction of all the required game resources were donwloaded at first, but you still could get in-game. As I played, I noticed new textures, sounds and animations appearing as they were downloaded during the game. It worked really fine, and when my newbie human mage was ready to go to Stormwind, I didn't have to do any waiting because the city had been loaded while I was playing in Nortshire. With just 1mbps connection, it was technologically the most impressive experience I've had with streaming clients.
It's not a sim, so the idea of the shirt not blowing in the wind or the player not breathing, in my opinion, really doesn't hold water.
The pot shots at Mr. Woods are, in my opinion, unnecessary. Whatever has or hasn't happened is between him and his wife and perhaps whatever deity he chooses to worship. His choice of career doesn't change that. I prefer, as a general rule (though, being human, I do sometimes make mistakes here as well), not to look down on people unless I'm giving them a hand up, but to each their own, I suppose.
That being said, taking the game for what it is, a browser game, it's well done. A lot of browser games and even some F2P client downloads are not even as well done as this one is. I'm not a very big golf fan, so this is probably not a game I will play a lot of, but were a company to come out with a game that appeals to me that were as well done as this one seems to be, I might find yet another way to waste time on my computer - as if I needed that!

Maybe MMO is not your genre, go play Modern Warfare...or something you can be all twitchy...and rank up all night. This is seriously getting tired. -Ranyr
Does the game allow me to have sexual escapades with lots of chicks? If not, then it isn't a realistic Tiger sim!
EXACTLY.
Bring on the cheap low rent porn actrisses Tiger "loved."

see i have beta tested this since the beggining and they dont listen very well to the players, sure they add more courses but the biggest problem is that we get -25 scores for a round of golf, and its unrealistic. they have a put pre view that lets you see the current put if you were to do it now and then lets you adjust and then put, the courses are wonderful but still if you are at a slight angle your ball never goes straight (i play real golf) and if i am at a slight angle it never effects my shot, the spin on the ball is good but unrealistic, if i put alll back spin and have a 10 mile hour wind helping me it always follows short or youneed to add another club, again not very realistic, your short puts are a pain in the but also, you have a 8 inch put that up hill, if you do mot max out the put it bareley moves , and if you have a 5 foot uphill put you need to move out the marker further out to get a stronger put its stupid
OMG! EA made this with Unity 3D right? It's a free game engine (well the Pro version is 1200 dollars but ). i tried it out once, and I noticed that when testing a game out, I was able to export to web browser! SO they must've used this to make it.
hmm...i don't like golf, i think its the most boring game on the face of the planet...I could care less about golfers either so whether its tiger woods or not I could care less...and its from EA which means to me...I'm probably gonna stay clear of it based on history...
so..Golf+tigerwoods+game about a game+EA = pass on this one.. IMHO...
Had a gentelmans round of golf this afternoon with some mates. Enjoyed it a lot. It reminds of the classic EA pga games rather than the current state of the art Tiger Woods Console games. Was rather impressed with it seeing as it's a browser game and all:)
This is all well and good, but can you cheat on your wife? If not then it really isnt Tiger Woods Online.
Where's my immersion!?!?
This. +1 If I can't have multiple women to cheat on my wife with the game is a deal breaker. Seriously though I dont get why someone would make a game with this cheating scumbag in it right now.
This is all well and good, but can you cheat on your wife? If not then it really isnt Tiger Woods Online.

Heh, yeah it should be closer to the south park version
Browser based games are getting more and more popular but I never see them replace a good normal game. As for why I didn't try it out, I just think golf is horrible boring. If you like it, fine but taste differs and I just don't see the point.

The Unity engine is unreal. I've used it for a few projects, its very easy to develop in and it can really push it over the web, quite sick, really.
I hope EA doesn't actually buy the engine technology....they'd simply kill it...like everything else that's independant and cool that they've bough

I tried the game, I always liked good golf games, and this is one of the best I played. Good find.

An actual multiplayer game using browser that is better than Tiger Woods...

Why so much negativety about a game few know anything about? I find a launch like this far better than something like Star Trek did. I wish them luck.
