Mortal Online: Delayed Again

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

StarVault's Henrik Nystrom has informed fans who have been eagerly awaiting the launch of Mortal Online that they'll have to wait another month due to a number of technical issues that have cropped up.

As you know we have been working hard to solve our desync issue within the game to have a proper release of Mortal Online. We have made some progress but we think we have hit the limits on the current version of the network solution we are using. We believed we had the solution before end of March but we now see that this is not possible at the moment therefore we have to postpone the release for another month. We have been working very hard day and night now for some years and finally started to see the goal and release, we just have to put another gear in before we are going to release Mortal Online. Thank you for your feedback and support that helped us to take this important decision.

I for one am very glad, this game needs more time, I would give it 6 months, but hopefully they will keep improving after launch.

Actually, fans can play for free right now as everyone can make an account free of charge and play in the open beta which has been extended for the duration of the delay. So no one should be waiting at all, if you want to play MO go have at it!

Most people interested in MO went through the series of delays back when DF was released, however this has one key difference. MO has a free open beta avialiable to everyone, so dont take the dev's word on what will be in game (all lies from the DF devs), go try it for yourself before you pay. The launched version of the game will be what is currently offered in beta and hopefully minus the desync issues.

Delay was the right thing to do.  Its unplayable and when I tried it out it didnt even feel ready for open beta let alone release

I used to visit this site a lot however in recent years it has become the home of negative forum posts, illogical opinions and tantrums so I visit less often.

    Played or Beta'd: UO / DAOC / Horizons / EQ2 / DDO / EVE / Archlord / PirateKingsOnline / Tabula Rasa / LOTRO / AOC / Champions / Darkfall / Mortal Online / DCUO / Rift / STO / SWTOR / TSW

Mortal definitely needs more time to flesh out its issues. While Irespect and admire the vision of their world, the execution so far has been sub-par to say the least. Keep workin' at it SV and you could have a little gem on your hands there.

Good move on the delay. The game needs more time, etc, etc, etc. Hopefully Epic can come up with a fix for the desync issues since SV has apparently hit a wall with it.

    Its a wonderful idea.

But it needs to be on the level of Oblivion when it releases, and its not even HALF way there.

Needs another year and a lot more talented people working on it.

Do we really need everyone pointing out opinions?

I'm smart enough to know when someone says "This is so awesome!!" or "This sucks!" its an opinion.  I also believe everyone else is that intelligent, as it doesn't take a genius to identify an opinion. You don't have to come into a thread and announce "OMG!! OPINION!!!!". These are forums. Its expected there will be lots of opinions. Some opinions people are passionate about. Some opinions will be spot on. Some opinions are laughable.

This is the 3rd thread out of 3 threads I've read today, that has someone pointing out someone's reply as an opinion. Is that some form of rebuttal? I certainly hope not. Surely, you don't feel we need an authority to point out opinions(since almost all replies are opinions).

Well sir we don't need you coming here and pointing out our opinions by giving us your opinion that we don't need to post more opinions.

NOW. I did try the game it wasn't a good try by me, but i did give it a shot. To me the game was a lil dull and clunky feeling with the interface. I mean, could they have made it a lil harder to navigate around n it? As far as the delay goes I'm not sure how long it needs, but if they are having this much trouble with it still it might be time to fire some of the people working there. Maybe do a better job on those applications. make sure its a real college or at least some experience making something and not one of those " yeah, I won a superbowl with the Cowboys. What position? Forth string linebacker...some call it the scout team, but I got a ring." blah blah blah.

How many delicate flowers have you met in Counterstrike?

I got a case of beer and a chainsaw waiting for me at home after work.

'The above (though it should be obvious) needed saying and deserves my agreement.

I add that not all opinions are equal (that by their nature as opinions, they must all be merely equal is the most laughable opinion of all) and would point out that (much to the shock of some) people do tend to prefer their own.

I know I prefer my own (if I didn't, I'd change them until I did) and do so with reason, after having arrived at them largely through the process of rational thought. There's a kind of popular prejudice, however (that some people attempt to spread), against reaching anything like a conclusion at the end of a round of thinking-- I believe it derives from a childish impulse to resent it when others feel that they are right, as if it were a prize to be won instead of a universal human condition.

Now, as far as Mortal Online has gone-- it should go farther, remaining in open Beta, and so the delay is no bad thing. Six months, as many have said, seems about right.

I hope (because I have some reason to think so) that the problems which are keeping the game unready are solvable. I worry, though, that some folks will get tired or more likely get bored of the game before it starts-- but then I reflect that the easily bored are some of the first people who it would be good to see go. Hysteria about 'how long' it is taking is probably just that, compounded by immaturity and the lowest common denominator of tolerance for frustration found in online communities.

This is the best decision Starvault could have made under these circumstances. So many companies have put rushing a product to market above the demands of the playerbase that it is nice to finally see a company that actually gives a damn about what it community has to say.

Critics can say what they will about how small or unproffessional Starvault is, but when it comes to the criticil decisions I feel they are appropriate and professional.

The game most definetly needed delaying from my last pop into beta...

    Make it so...

  • manjimanmanjiman Member Posts: 2

I played ... or at least tried to play the Beta.  In all seriousness though, this game is ugly as sin and laggy as hell.  It needs more time and money thrown at it with some talented graphics and audio people to boot.  If you want a game to be anything more than a niche for the hardcore (who are a minority) you need it to be palatable.  This game is anything but palatable in its presentation.  It may well have the most amazing rpg system, backstory and concept, but unless its presented in a way that appeals to the masses its going to be niche at best, failure more likely.

So now with the Xsyon pre-orders starting to enter that game and Xsyon's launch delayed to May 15 the question becomes which sandbox game will launch first in a playable condition.

This is a bummer but it's good that they are doing this instead of releasing it into the wild and risking horrible reception.

    Momo sucks, I have proof.

Too many companies seem to chuck a project out the door before it's finnished, better a daelay and a decent release rather a quick, cash grab, disposable piece of <insert noun here>

Someone said here that tera is having the same desync issues as MO.
It's true. SV devs made everything they could to get rid of desync, but it was epic's bugged product (atlas+UE), and SV lost 3 fkin months trying to fix a problem not caused by them.
If they were working last 3 months on polishing and balancing things, MO would be ready to go in march. The game already contains all features, which were listed year ago from witch MO will comprise by the release.
It's just a matter of polishing them, balancing combat, and fixing couple bugs.

Now I regret that SV is utilizing unreal engine.
Even if latest version of UE offers at last working speedtree5 and couple other useful features.

They based their whole game around experimental technology made by Epic (Atlas) that supposedly was meant to spread engine that was made for 32 simultaneous players in mind to take in 10000 simultaneous players...Too bad it wasnt much more than a proof of concept when sv started to work on MO and it's still far from finished system.

SV would have had easier time making a MMO using freebie Torque engine than UE3.5 and Atlas...They used 90% of their cash on a gamble and lost.
