CoH Vet - can't find interest in returning bc of..

dax01dax01 Member Posts: 5

Hi,

I'm still interested in CoH, I'v been a long time player hardcore from beta3 until update5-6. But now, we are in 2010, the game is 6 yrs old.. The graphics and animation are so outdated. I'v watch Going Rogue trailer and the new demon summoning, they havent done much to upgrade them. The model are still the same. If you look at the avatar, they are squarrish looking. I remember back in 2004 when I was amazed by it .. now, well with all the new games and better gaphics (add to that years of ppl doing almost only PLing).  I don't think I will be able to return to this game.

As for.. Champion Online, I don't even call that a mmo since it's ridiculously instanced.

What game do you consider not to have dated graphics?

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Well, for one less older games. In my opinion, that its just that - 6 yrs for a game is long. I understand it's still profitable but if you are to work on a expansion why not revamp the old graphic engine. As I red, they only added some extra shadow effects thich is like adding lipstick on already so-so mouth. eheh. Any how, I'm not here to bash on COH, I like the game but - I wish they would try to think for the futur and not just adding stuff that still in one year will look the same.

    how about CoH2 ?

Yah, DCU might be the one I'm looking for. I was looking like crazy to CO, oh boy I was disapointed (and I played 6 month until I was fed up with instances and playing "alone". And don't let me started on STO).

.. Age of Conan is 2 yrs old, graphics still great. LoTro, the new expansion is looking good also.

Graphics wise, the upcoming issue has something called Ultra Mode, which considerably updates the video.   This game has grown in very positive ways and it's the one MMO I come back to time and again.

Hum.. might take a look at this ultra mode.

..and for returning. I don't even count the number of the I reactivated my account over the course of the 5 yrs I played.

See, I find there to be a lot wrong with CoH - but the graphics is not part of the issues.  Did a few steps of the beta, pre-ordered through CUSA, and here we are almost six years later and I barely have 9 months of sub time in.  It is the game that I am currently playing though, and I did the pre-purchase of GR.  I've played a lot of games over the years since UO first came out, and generally speaking graphics have never been the main thing for me.  I did the trial of LOTRO and was not impressed with the graphics which people had hyped, leaving me to see that it was just the same old same old and there was no reason to go beyond the trial.  Other new games that I have done trials for, left me feeling like the graphics from Anarchy Online might as well be DX14 instead of DX7.

It would be nifty if there was more info on Ultra Mode other than a few screenies showing improved water effects and shadows though...lol.

I17 open beta will be here soon enough and plenty of screenies, vids or, if you're subbed, opportunity to test Ultramode for yourself.

Much like some of the other threads have said though and muck like they have said themselves, it is mainly about reflections and shadows.  They have not discussed issues with tearing, smoothing, increasing the number of colors on costume pieces, changing the locations of powers, increasing the details, or so many of the visual issues in the game.

I am a old CoH player, the artitech(sp?) issue made me never go back, from what I heard from friends all anyone does anymore is the same Artitech mission from lv 1 to 50. If i wanted to do bascally the same thing over and over, i'd play the random free to play korean grind mmo's all around the place.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

I think that all of my characters together have played fewer than a dozen Architect missions. There's tons of other missions I've never done, so I'm hardly bored with the game. Getting invited to a mission that turned out to be just endlessly bashing an endless hoard of oranges and reds pretty well put me off that grind nonsense.

Only some people.....if other people's playing style is holding you back from playing, that's your loss....

I've yet to find an mmo I enjoy as much as I used to enjoy CoH. But after several years, it just got boring and repetitive.

I come back from time to time to see what's changed, but it's never been enough for me to stay on. New powersets are always interesting but in and of themselves never enough.

But some of the other upcoming changes look like they have potential in terms of keeping and holding my interest.

I'd give them a go, anyway.
