Thinking of playing.
I've played FFXI (2 level 60 jobs, got tired of all the cookie cutter partys, tactics, ideals. No originality in the end. If you are not a carbon copy of other, prepare to fight alone)
I tried Ever quest II, got bored in 2 days... Fighting was pointless, and the entire feel of it was... not fun.
Tried Wow, found it boring.
I look at this, and it looks nice, but i just wanted to see what some of you guys thought.

I'm probably not the best person to respond to this, seeing as I have not played since beta and am into the 14 Day Trial for the moment, but....
This game seems completely different then say EQ2, SWG, WOW, etc... ..how? .. well .. it uses a skill based system for one.....
What that translates to is that you do not get a template set of skills as you level up. When you do level up you earn skill point and may then go and purchase any of the available skills(skill options, upgrades, etc..) from the trainer. The system allows for true freedom in character progression .. something I have not found in any other game before.
As far as "grinding".. well, every game has it I guess .. its just a matter of perspective. The nice thing here is that it can not be a grind unless you make it so .. at least that has been my experiance thus far.
Bottom line, the 14 day trial is there .. my suggestion would be to give it a go .. don't even need a CC. Everyone likes different things so best to form ones own opinion.
thanks for the advice. I think i will give it a shot.

And the possibilty to adapt all you're skills as you please...
If you want a spell that uses more Hp then Sap, you can make it, or you want an attack thats is only powerful and not very accurate (not a good idea though ) you can make it...
Voer geen oorlog, voer de eendjes...
Damn, I feel dumb. Just reread my first post... Didn't ask anything i really wanted to know >_<.
And, i don't want to rush into another MMORPG... Last time i did, i ended up playing a game i hated. (eq2 -.-)
Here it goes again (not half asleep this time).
1] What's the level grind like?
2] From what I can tell, there are a lot of ways to play, since you can make your skills and progress the way you like. But i remember one of FFXI main selling points (atleast to me) was that you could be completely original, yet, they failed to say that being completely original would leave you playing alone (and going past 10 alone is insane). So the questions is, do the paths available to me actually matter? Or will i just end up choosing the sames traits, skills, etc, etc as everyone else in order to be an efficient Damage dealer, healer, etc, etc.
3) What the commnunity like? FFXI had a nice one, atleast for a while... It was one of the main reasons i played it for so long... Lots of buddies, which in the end is what makes MMORPG fun. While i played EqII, i felt so alone... It felt as if i was playing a really crappy solo RPG.
4) Are there tactics in battle? I've seen the video clips, and they don't reveal much, the only thing that i can tell, is it looks fun .
5) Hows the economy? Very few MMORPGs i have played have actually had one... I remember Pristone tales, MU, and a few others.. In the end, things just became about trading, and the game cash became useless. FFXI had a living breathing economy... completely centered around It's ingame currency.
6)My last questions (if you've bothered reading this whole thing i thank you).
My computers specs ---
P4 @3.2Ghz HT
1.00GB of Ram DDR 400 MHz
BFG 6800GT PCIe @ 425mhz/1000 mhz
I should be able to run it fine right ?
Thanks in advance!
Heya,
While I probably can't answer all your questions .. I will try to relate some usefull info your way
1) In short, and this is just "IMHO", there is none. The reason I say this is because the game does a good job with character progression. You will still have to craft for craft xp, harvest for harvest xp, fight for fight xp, etc.. ..but you are in controll, or at least it feels like you are more in controll, then striving for that next level and the next set of template skills that come with it. The way you gain xp in your chosen field is by simply using the weapon(or magic type) of that field.
ie. You want to level 2-hander combat? ..use a 2-hander in battle. You want to level defensive magic? ..join a group and act as healer and/or crowd controll; or use tactics that will allow you to use the said spells in solo-play.
As far as the speed of the progression, it slows down the higher and higher you get in levels .. but that is to be expected. I , so far, have hit 28 in Melee and 27 in Offensive Magic and do not feel like I'm "grinding" to get levels.
...also hit 54 in Harvesting, a skill which I guess would be considered more of a "grind" category .. but it did not feel like so for some reason, the progression felt natural as it occured during me working on the crafting skills.
2) The other nice thing here is that as the main skill categories(Fighting, Magic, Crafting, Harvesting) split into sub-trees, you still get 10 Skill Points every time you progress in a level in any given sub-tree. So, at 20 when the Fight tree splits into Melee and Ranged .. you would still get 10 SPs for going to 21 in Melee and you would also get 10 SPs for going to 21 in Ranged. Both of those 10 SPs will go into a common "Fighting" pool which you can spend at the related trainer for actions, upgrades, options, etc..
The level cap is, atm, set at 250 .. so as you can imagine there is lots of room for custom skill sets here. Can't tell you if at lvl150 every skill set ends up being identical .. since I have yet to breach 50s with combat related skills .. but it looks as if there is a lot of room to "play" with them.
One thing that we cannot discount here, and I hope noone is offended by me saying so, but if one was to make a gross generalisation .. one could say that a vast majority of people are sheep .. that is one reason that a lot of games end up the way they do. Given the chance, people will usually "follow the flock" and will in most situations try to do so by following the "path of the least resistance".
I have noticed that this is not happening(at least not yet) during my stay in Ryzom .. mybey I just lucked into an awesome batch of folks to share the starter Tryker zone with .. but, I guess, one will get a better perspective on this once on mainland.
3) I can't really comment much here. The folks I have run across in the starter zone are awesome, but who knows what the mainland will bring.
4) Most definitely, I have yet to experiance large scale group battles .. but as far as solo play is concerned, especially as a mage, tactics play a big part in your ability to survive.
5) Again, I don't think the starter zone can really give me a good basis to comment on this point, but I can say this... ...all the "loot" from critters comes in a form of materials usable in crafting. SO, Combat orianted toons WILL have a significant impact on the economy; seeing as they are able to provide some rare, high quality/grade, materials for crafters to use. Crafters do not, however, need to rely on the looted materials. The harvestor skill tree provides abilities that will allow one to seek out and gather materials from around the regions without the need to engage in combat.
It seems that the steps that would lead to a decent and stable economy are there, to see if they work well tho .. well .. I will need to spend some time on mainland.
6) Oh yes. At work when on an old Athlon 1.4GHz, 2GB ram(133MHz kind), and a ATI 9600Pro I can play this game at 1600x1200 with most of the settings turned quite up.
Hope some of that helps, sorry for the essay .. and keep in mind that this is just MY take on things and as I see them with about a week of gameplay under my belt(I did beta this game since alpha, but that is completely unrelated to how things are now). Hopefully some experianced Ryzom players will stop by and offer their opinions to give you a better idea about how things are these days.
No, it is not all about getting the uber char. For example i have lvl72 in harvesting while in melee only 36. I am the one who decides what to level how. The nearly unique skillsystem and the configurable skills let me play the game like i want.
You dont need to kill as many mobs as possible if you dont like. If you like you go only hunting those beasts you need for crafting. This is real freedom and a lot RPG. It depends on you in which way you level up !
I guess it might be possible to grow up without any killing . You can earn health and dapper (money for armour ect.) only by crafting and healing.
The other way you can go an hit mobs as much as you like. You dont have to harvest for hours (which might for some people boring). You are the one who decides if you are a warrior, a magican, a healer or a crafter, not the game. An if you want to spend time into it you can be 2 of them or even all of them at top level
If you want then your char can impact the world. There is a famous jewelry crafter at lvl 180. Hes is like Cartier in real world . So you really can be someone in SoR. An you have to work really hard for it.
Hello All,
Unfortunatly, SoR has totaly lost my interest. It's not fun for me at all.
I can't hype this game. Sorry.
Carrara
Same here.
For me, the game has so much going for it. In fact, aspects of it remind me of Anarchy Online.. in that it's... well.. wierd. It's not like anything else out there, really. The world is absolutely alive. Everything seems to be a living thing... as was mentioned, carnivores will prey on smaller/weaker animals, and will promptly come after you once they've finished off their prey. Rodents scurry about.. the seasons change, there are thunderstorms, wind-storms, etc. etc.
I keep coming back to check on it, but for right now one key thing that's missing from it for me is a "point" to everything.
I don't mean the point to you playing the game - that's pretty much universally to have fun and/or escape reality for a while.
What I mean is a point to what you're character is doing - beyond the scope of the activity itself.
In otherwords, each quest feels like an isolated incident with no broader-ranging significance. You're killing 10 Kipees basically because the NPC asked you to. Kipees do tie into the over-arching storyline, but not in any important or immediate way. Nothing ties into a larger storyline yet. There is plenty of lore, on the website, but as of the last time I played, it wasn't implemented into the game yet.
It's kinda like Anarchy Online in that way. There's this on-going battle between Clan and Omni with Neutral sorta doing the Neutral thing.. but it's really a back-seat situation. You only know you have enemies because you're attacked by them if you happen to enter their cities or their territories.
A perfect example is FFXI. You've obviously played that quite alot, so you'll know what I mean. You know how every quest and, especially, every mission ties into the over-arching storyline.. especially when you hit the Zilart content? How there's a sense of accomplishment in everything you do? I don't know what you played or where you started, but I play(ed) a Mithra from Windurst. You start off answering to gate guards. Once you've done a number of things for your country and have proven your dedication, you are shown that increased regard by answering to a higher authority. Finally, you meet with the Star Sybil herself and are charged to go forth and do things on behalf of the country. All the while, there are all these stories going on.. From the large scale Shadowlord story, to the smallest individual story, such as the Galks with the bell-tower in Jeuno. There's just a sense of purpose behind everything you do.
I never felt that in Ryzom. Ever. Everything was just a to-do type task with no greater significance than the task itself.
And, it's curious because there is so much lore there, so much in place by way of game mechanics, faction s, etc. etc. that it seems like the game wants to be something bigger. And perhaps it will.. .but it just needs time to boil some more.
I'm waiting for that time and, when it comes, I think Ryzom is going to be a solid and truly fantastic game. It's just not "ready" yet, to me.

Which FF Character Are You?
I played for a few days now and i like it.
strong point: -great character avancement and customization
-amazing world
-good mecanic
-its fun to watch the animal and the flora around you
bad point:
-its easy to fall in the grind
about quest i know no game that relly have a feeling of acomplisment since all there quest even if epic and awsome are done multiple time by multiple people and have no impact on the world so for now it cant relly be an argument for me.
This game going in the good direction for many things only miss a few things and its going to be a great game.
It LOOKS cool.
It's NOT that cool.
The chat system with the balloons is the best i've seen implemented this way. It works.
Apparently there's a "community" out there. Damned if I can find them. Community to me is all about interaction, and that side of things just didn't eventuate for me in SoR - not that I played for long.
I liked exploring - just to SEE stuff, but I found that the game was forcing me to play in a way that I didn't want - i had to play ITs way, not MY way.
I got bored of it fast. I cancelled my account with them recently. I'll give them 12 months then see if it's changed.
Forum signatures are stupid and annoying. I've turned mine off.
What did you miss?

When I last played 5 months ago in beta i was very disapointed in the overall game mechanics and how they came together, ideas sounded good on the site, but dont think it was done rigth.
/agree.
The game idea and concept was outstanding. Just the companies inexperience and lesser size than other game companies put it at a disadvantage and somewhere along the line the game went from progressing well to loosing its identity.
Now it is just a remapped glorified EQ. Grind Grind some more.
And for the community part i believe he has a point. It is true that the community is very nice people and friendly because it is small.
But Player- Player Interaction such as mass trading, Instances (that other games pull off well), grouping etc are missing.
If given enough time in 3-4 years perhaps sor would be great but atm its lacking something.

Just a comment here--anybody who thinks the game is not fun is not putting much effort in to make it that way. Sure, like all MMOG's, it's a grind. But that grind dissapears when you're levelling with the help of other people.
For instance, the other day, i was harvesting, pulling some materials to make a boatload of guns to level my gun crafting. (yes, for those who don't know, there are guns in this game) All of a sudden, my guild leader tells on the chat, "Hey Xanavan, theres a hunt in Fount just a little south of the Bounty Beaches portal. You interested?"
"Excellent " I said. "I'll grab my gear." I strolled over to my mekatoub packers and swapped out my +focus armor for some +stamina stuff. I exchanged my pick for my pike and off I went.
You see, in this way, I instantaneosly switched from lakeland forager to heavy armsman. (without having to switch avatars .
In this game, more people=more fun. The European servers are overflowed with people, thus overcome with fun. However, over here on the North American server, we still have fun, but it could be so much more. Since there's not much developer advertising over here in the states, we homins are doing whatever we can to get everyone to try the free trial for 2 weeks. It's a great game, and it's only going to get better.
Remember---more poeple=more fun=no tedious grinding!!!
every game looses its allure at some point.
Its just how long it takes for you to loose it that differs from game to game. With Sor the graphics are nice but there isnt enough variation in the world from one step to the next to really make you go ... ooooh.
It gets boring and 'same ol same old' eventually.

OK, I have been playing this game about 4 months, this is my first mmorpg, so I will relate my experience for everyone that is here. Just to be clear I will give some idea of my levels in the context of what I have achieved and why.
I am a lvl 64 fighter, lvl 55 offensive afflictionist, lvl 127 elemenatal(offensive magician), lvl 142 Healer, lvl 109 def. afflictionist, lvl 177 forest forager, lvl 120 full shield crafter, and lvl 170 buckler crafter. I do have a few other craftings, mainly jewels atm, but only one piece of jewelry is at lvl 90. I have spent about 4 hours per day I play and play about 5 days a week. I have recently slowed down my lvling a lot due to doing other cool things in game. Levels is not all this game is about!! Hooray!
1. I have ocassionally felt like the game is a grind. Every game is like this at times. I just yell to others about what is going on, and usually get involved in something else. No grind required.
2. Being original like myself (see above) does not leave you playing alone, but makes it so that you are playing with even more variety. I am the solo explorer type, I really enjoy finding cool things and telling others about them. So I did uber level my elemental magic so I could be a little safer when traveling. The world is enormous once you get to the mainland. I know about 50% of one of the four lands inside and out at this point after 4 months of playing. And that is only traveling, not what materials to find in those areas to dig. It is Awesome.
3. The community is 95% GREAT. No lies, we have had a few bumps. However I know a lot of people, and everyone is very helpful. New people just need ask, and a lot of help comes your way.
4. There are tactics in battle, especially when you are right at your optimal kill elevel with a smaller team. There is killing monotony in some cases (I can only take about 2 hours of this at a time) if you allow yourself to fall into that. However 2 friends and I took a trek around for 4 hours the other day and got loads of experience without standing in the same place killing the same thing over and over and over.
5. The economy is somewhat in question as it is anti-new player at the moment. Crafters put items up for sale, but there is no indication of what people are looking for or what is in demand. The players are working on a boatload of ideas to solve this until the devs can do something to fix this, or the market hits a self regulation point. This may partially be due to the fact of our population being a little small. We do not have an Alan Greenspan around.
6. Your PC is more than adequate. Maybe you can't turn everyhting up to the Crazy definition settings, but Nirmal and high should not be out of reach for you at all. P.S. The game support wide screen upto 1920x1200. (Awesome BTW).
Give it a try, there is still a free 2 week trial, CC required with a notice 3 days before it gets charged.
I play on the North American Server, I am a Matis, and my IG name is Noinossalg.
I started playing during beta, and continued on the european arispotle server in the retail, played for some 3 months.
This game is all about the grind. It may seem like the coolest game ever during the 2 week trial, but it`s not. I became a 165 archmage, 150 priest and some 120+ in the other skills before i couldn`t take it any more... The game needs soo much more! It`s not even half done!
So.. I started playing WoW beta instead, got instantly addicted. Tbh WoW is a MUCH better game than SoR.
A couple of reasons:
Possible to solo
Auctionhouses which makes itemtrading very easy
Unique items
Dungeons (instances), some of which as big as SoR itself (Blackrock Mountain)
Highly customizable classes, with skilltrees like the ones in Diablo
I really hope the devs do something, cus SoR is dying. The game has potential, but things takes way to long. I`ve been following the progress, but sadly it looks exactly the same as it looked when i left.
(I`m Phyre, a female matis mage on Arispotle btw)

Which FF Character Are You?
I personally think the game is awsome, but thats my taste.
But if you want to try it I think you better wait a copple of weeks (months?) untill the outposts are implented, they look like a really awsome feature to me that could bring a whole knew level to teh game
