Recommend a good community or sci fi MMOG

I've just spent ages saving up to buy this pc, so now I want to play a decent MMOG on it. Im running a AMD 64 3000 + (I think thats about 2.4ghz), 128Mb 6600GT and 1024mb RAM. I'm not really sure what MMOG have to offer, but I would like something where I could build my own house and stuff. Or, on the other hand, a sci fi game, matrix online looks good, but again Im not really sure whats out there.

I would prefer it to be a free game, cos I cannot really afford to spend 15 dollars every month to play a game! Or even a game where I only have to buy the game itself. Second Life and Face Of Mankind look good (im downloading FOM beta now), but Im a little concerned about second lifes fees. 10 dollars a year sounds pretty good, but 20 a month just to own a house? It sounds a bit much. And I am also worried that the free beta for FOM will run out right when Im getting into to.

So if I really did have to pay for one, what would you recommend?

(PS, sorry about all these noob questions, but I've never had a decent pc or broadband connection before [500kbs], so I really am a noob to all this)

Well... in most cases, a "good free MMO" is an oxymoron. Most free games out there won't do that system justice. I played FOM's beta, and seeing as i cant remeber if it has an NDA on it, i'll just say i wasn't really happy with it. EVE online is probably the best sci-fi MMORPG, but it does have that 15 bucks a month fee. i dont really like fantasy MMO's my self, so I won't comment on them. If your looking for a good game that can offer what you said, and do that system justice, you are most likely going to have to bite the bullet and pay a monthly fee.

I just read the FOMs forum section here, couldn't find a good thing said about it, so I stopped my download. What happens in games like EVE? I have halo 2 and play that online, and while it is fun, I just feel it lacks a certain something, I mean you log on play a match, then match ends. That seems to be it. I want something like Deus Ex online (man that would be sweet). I do not fancy the idea of fantasy games either, all swords and magic seems a bit of a yawn to me. I do like rpgs though, fallout is one of my favourites, not a sword nor magic spell in sight in the fallout games.

    Im gonna get so flamed

I can some up all your worries in one word........ Planetside......before all the shit they added.

Nah for real though the closest game out there like your talking about is planetside the only game that made me completely nocturnal for the summer of 2003.

And ive yet to max the settings on it and ive gotten 2 new comps since its release. If you need a trial just lemme know. I know where to get one.

Here is the link for 14 day trial on EVE, and is this the planet side you mean? It dosn't look bad, looks a bit like starcraft would if it was a MMOG. Hey, thats not a bad idea :)

Star Wars Galaxies is the best MMORPG when it comes to player housing, house building, house designing. You have tiny houses all the way up to huge mansions. Basements, balconies, and you can even have parties on the rooftops of some. There are tons more housing features I have not listed. SWG is also a sci-fi mmorpg. SWG also has the best crafting system out of all mmorpgs. (After you go to the link, move your mouse over where it says "Games" near the top of the page.)

Anarchy Online is arguably the best mmorpg out. It is sci-fi. It is also FREE to play for ONE YEAR. You can download it for free from their main site. The player apartments are nothing special. But where AO shines is in the unique and complex buffing system, as well as having the best PvP system. You can not only take land from other player guilds, but you can defend what you gain, even while you are offline. (click on "downloads" on the left side of the page.)

If money is a big issue, then you should check out Anarchy Online. It is free to download. And free to play for 1 year. They will keep your character saved even if you stop playing. One of my friends has not played for 2 years and they still have his character saved.

The most well known free mmorpg is Runescape. Best if you try it for yourself to see how much you like it, or dislike it. It is not a sci-fi mmorpg though.

    http://runescape.com/

Another thing you can do is just play any other pay to play MMORPG, every 3 months. Then do not play for 5 months. Then play again for 3 months in a row. Every mmorpg will save your character for 6 months minimum if you do not play. Most mmorpgs will continue saving characters after 6 months, but they do not have to. Most don't enforce this rule of theirs though.

So if I really did have to pay for one, what would you recommend?

Since you say you like the idea of player owned houses, then Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) is the best one to recommend for you.

I also recommend Anarchy Online (AO) since it is 100% free, and you say money is an issue for you.

If money were NOT an issue for you, (maybe in the far future?) I would recommend in order: AO, EvE Online, SWG. EQ2/WoW.

(PS, sorry about all these noob questions, but I've never had a decent pc or broadband connection before [500kbs], so I really am a noob to all this)

Yes, i forgot about SWG... i played it for damn near 6 months... then SOE started to screw things up. But, I still read all the patch realse notes, and it seems SOE is trying to rectify the damage it did. But, SWG is still a good game, especially with Jump to lightspeed. EVE online's 14 day trial is nice, you can get the trial code through the pic on the side-scrolling menu on the main page.

I heard Planetside was okay... but there was SERIOUS lag issues (or so i heard)... but it seemed like a cool game... its just the technology to run a MMOFPS isn't quite developed enough. And right know, Planetside is probably the closest thing to a MMO of Halo 2... although i feel bad about comparing Halo 2 to planetside...

Also, if the trial does not require a credit card, can i get one? image I really hate commenting on games i havent played.

I was tempted to buy starwars galaxies today, I was looking at the box and everything, but for some reason I thought I would wait until I try the EVE trial first. I bought Vampire 2 Bloodlines, from Troika, instead. Troikas last game it was, I've been big fans of them way back in Black Isle days. If only they would make a MMORPG, they really did make the best RPGs!

hehe, I even downloaded "There" but it wouldnt run for some reason. Screen is just black for 5 minutes, then a picture of mountains fade into view and thats it. I wasn't bothered, I wouldn't have liked it anyway.

The only thing I have ever played that could be considered a MMOG would be cybertown, a rubbish community but at the time I liked it because I didn't know anything else existed. It had its own item system and a really lame "war" that was always going on. My fav part was making items and seeing how well they sell for profit, but a game that would just offer that isn't worth paying monthly fees for! One thing that bothers me about SWG is the expansion, would playing for the first time with the expansion overload me with content, and are much more expansions expected (like the sims had)?

The more I look into games like SWG, the more addictive the idea of them gets. Which is scary, as I havn't even played one yet!
