Would you pay to play (P2P) for a mmorpg?

This is a simple question that im sure most of you can answer...

I voted no because I know around half of the people who I meet in a MMORPG (completely free) are under 18.
And as you know only 18+ can get a credit card, and even if they accept (EG) bank transfers, would your parents pay for it every month?

I've never seen a free MMo that didn't suck.

    Does that answer the question?

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

If you are looking for a group who don't pay for an MMORPG, then you've come to the wrong place. The majority of the people who post at mmorpg.com do indeed pay for an MMORPG, or plan to, or used to. The majority of the ones who do not end up making topics that will really show that they don't (for instance: "what is a good free MMORPG?" "I need ideas for an MMORPG to play, must be free", "p2p sucks" or something along those lines). Not to say that the ones who don't pay are bad or anything, just easily distinguishable (except for maybe a few).

Doesn't P2P mean "Peer to Peer", or was that something else?

But how can you know if you like a game or not, unless you spend 10 dollars buying it and 15 dollars for your first month, only to find "oh my god, this does suck". i think MMOG should come with a simple free mode, that you can play for as long as you want offline, where NPCs are in place of other players, then the potential buyer could use his imagination and see what it would be like online. But maybe that would put off potential customers, and game makers would rather take that initial $25 fee just to try the games properly.

NPC's in place of the players?  Not worth it.  Your talking about a big project there.  Not to meantion having the monsters work offline.  They are controlled by the server.   You'd have to develope a totally different kind of AI system for offline play and stuff.   I don't know a lot about it, but I know that it would be a huge project.  Not worth the money or time.

Have paid, many times, to play MMOG's. This, however, does not mean you are going to have a great game to play. Having an income will help with design costs, new features, etc.. and often leads to a MMOG that is "sometimes" better than the free ones. Guild Wars got lucky, they managed to find a financially stable partner to ensure production would continue, having a few high profile staff members also helped insure the games future on the market.

Will I pay to play MMOG's in the future? I'm not sure, to be honest. At the current rate the games are hitting the market, and the level of quality continues to drop, I'm wondering if any MMOG's of the future will be worth my hard earned money.

    Just my two cents. :)

If you weren't so poor and could afford to try one then you might see one that is worth it.

Acctualy I`m not so poor, but there are many games which consist of killing + chat I`ll better buy shooter and pay for it once than do same thing, but pay for it each month

I mean purely on a demo basis, like a single level you can try before handing over those precious VISA numbers. I have no idea how a mmog would play, what you would do in the different types of mmog or what happens over the months of playing it. Is there a specific goal? If you stop membership for a month while your on vacation, does your in game person lose everything you spent years working for? Is it all about killing, or do you talk to other people, and is it fun? You can only find out by paying up, or giving your private details for a "free" trial.

You go to the movies, do you know if you will like it or not? Nope.

You buy some food that you've never eaten before, do you know if you will like it or not? Nope.

You buy a normal single player game, do you know if you will like it or not? Nope.

You go to some exotic island for a vacation, do you know if you will like it or not? Nope.

You were born, did you know if you would like it or not? Nope.

    See where this is going?

    It's life, deal with it.

Does someone financial status really that big of deal with you? I'm not poor, and I'm not willing to fork over my hard earned dollar to pay to play a game I feel is not worthy of my money. I alpha/beta test MMOG's when ever I get a chance, not only in hopes to some how assist in some meger way to make the game better for everyone, but to also get a first look at it. If I feel the game has some "Replay Value" then by all means, I go out of my way to buy a copy and play.

I've said this once before, and I'll say it again. The market is saturated with MMOG's, most of which are struggling to make it month by month, offering poor game play, and little replay value. Many would rather take the short & easy road and clone an exisisting MMOG rather than accually dedicating time, effort, and tallent into making something original and fun. Gone are the days when a game company (large or small) accually puts forth the effort to make a MMOG that will stand the test of time and offer replay value to existing players, and keep bring in new players.

I salute Meridian 59, Ultima Online, EverQuest, and Asheron's Call for hanging in there threw out the years. All of which are still on the market and still bringing in revenue. UO still has my dollar, 7 years later , and I revisit AC about 2-3 times a year for a few months. If Darkfall makes it to market, I'm all over it like flies on sh#t. I've said enough, yall take take it how you like. We're all entitled to our own opinions, and this is mine.

How do you know this? Are you telepathic? The fact is all players in a pay to play MMORPG somehow paid up. BTW, did you know some CC companies give CC to people younger than 18?

Some credit card companies give credit cards to people younger than 18. Next, not every MMORPG requires a CC to pay. There are game cards, money orders, cash, (yes cash), pay pal, and more. When AO first came out, it had the most ways to pay to play out of every mmorpg out.

Even if one is under 18, they can get an older brother, friend, sister, to pay. My younger brother got me to use my CC for something once. He gave me the money, and I made the order.

Last, there is a new CC put out by Western Union. It is a pre-paid CC. I know there are other prepaid CC, but with this one, anyone any age can get it, all they have to do is give $25.oo to the western union salesperson. They are sooo desperate to make sales, you can put any age on the form, and they instantly give you the CC in 5 mins! (It depends on the location of the Western Union, and how badly they want to make their CC quota.)

Very last, many parents give CC to their kids to use, kids as young as 12! Kids are spoiled these days LOL!

    -----------------------

Your poll is moot. MMORPGs are over 6+ years old. For 6+ years millions of players have been paying to play. It is like making a poll saying "Would you buy a Toyota Camery?" after it has already become the best selling car. You are too late, Mr. Reality has spoken and Mr. Reality says it is a fact there IS a market for mmorpgs that require players to pay to play. If you personally cannot afford it, finnish school, graduate, get a carreer job, save your money, then later on you will easily be able to afford to splurge $50.oo for the game box, and $15.oo monthly fee.

People who have graduated school, get their education, and have career jobs, do not feel anything from spending $50.oo as a one time fee, and $15.oo as a monthly fee. Millions of people are spending anywhere from $100 to $500 per month in monthly fees if you count all the cable TV subscriptions they have, magazine subscriptions, newspapers subscriptions, etc.. and etc....

More proof that the $50 box fee and $15 monthly fee is nothing, is the fact that many mmorpg players spend hundreds  and t-h-o-u-s-a-n-d-s  of real life money on items in the mmorpgs!

MMORPGs are really cheap entertainment if you look at it.
Like a couple posts above, a person buys a carton of smokes like every week if not sooner for abou 36bucks. He buys beer everytime he runs out,(probably ever week) he goes  gambling at casinos. ect ect ect.
  • WorfWorf Member Posts: 264

Can't pay if I wanted to do so on ANY Pay to Play games.

Currently don't have enough income to do so.

Don't tell me to get a better job... I'm working at a very very good job... There are other circumstances that are NONE of your business as to why there is no extra money a month.
