What is the best MMORPG out there

I will be 18 this sunday and I intend on getting the best MMORPG on the market right now. I have been playing Everquest Online Adventures for the PS2 but I dont like playing online games on my PS2. So I have decided to get one for my PC. There are so many MMORPGs out there that i just dont know what to get. And yes I realize that this has probably been done hundreds of times already but I got tired of looking through all the old topics.

I want great graphics

Swords, magic, stuff like that as weapons.

Massive worlds

PVP is a plus i dont have to have it.

Thats about it for now.

Well for starters, what are you pc specs? Really no point recommending games that you cant run image.

I made the switch from eqoa (ps2 mmorpg) to pc mmorpgs a few months back and havent looked back yetimage. Ive played Anarchy online, EQlive, Asheron's call, Saga of Ryzom and World of warcraft. The best so far is Anarchy online and once i my sub runs out on WoW ill be going back to that. Before trying this games just make sure you have enough ram on your comp and decent vid card so you actually get to play this games as opposed to lagging around.

Seems like you want WoW..(World of Warcraft). I've never played it myself, but according to ALOT of my fiends it is "the coolest mmorpg in existence"...

WoW, has that medieval scenery you probably want and the graphics are said to be astonishing but not too extreme. And some reviewers have mocked the Morrowind "world" for being tiny in comparison to WoW.

And as far as I know WoW has PvP...

    Apparently your friends are stupid.

Wow is a great game but to say its graphics are astonishing would classify as the most retarded statement of the year.

    back on topic.

I suggest you try alot of them out, WoW is a great game, not the best. EQ2 is a great game, not the best..get what I am implying here? Great is in the eye of the player, one players great is another players omg this blows.

As was mentioned however your pc specs are a must, to even begin to get suggestions. It would be completely pointless to recommend games your pc is incapable of.

I would recommend guild wars..although i havent tried Wow yet but I personally think GW has way more fun-factor the eq2 . Eq2 is more polished though in the not so fun areas (Audible Npcs, storyline, movies etc) .

You know it baffles me why we put up with stupid friends. I have a few of them that everytime they say something I find myself shaking my head in utter amazement.

I know you did not say it.

Btw I came across a tad more caustic in that post then I intended.

Wow's graphics are astonishing. What it lacks in polygons it makes up in style, definetly.

So style = crappier graphics engine? Whos to say a game cant have great effects and high quality graphics but still have style? Stop trying to cover up WoWs 5 year old engine with the whole 'it has style' crap. Look at Guildwars, sure its not the most advanced engine out, but it still looks damn good and has a ton of style.

The art direction for WoW is pretty amazing, despite earlier comments.

It's correct to say the best mmorpg is in the eye of the player.  Different people like different games.  And some people just can't let go of their outdated MMORPG's, and therefore all new MMO's suck in their eyes.  Some people can't accept change.  Watch out for these people.   They will lead you astray.

Ok I now know your specs are bad. so WoW and EQ2 are both likely out of the question. If you are strapped for cash for your pc and happen to have a ps2, buy FFXI for PS2 that sounds like your best bet.

Now as to your pc upgrade, you have no agp slot.

This is bad, very bad. Honestly Do not waste your money on either of those cards as without an agp slot your upgrade is meaningless. While I do not consider those cards worthwhile gaming cards at all, you are still bottlenecking them badly with a pci slot and their already deplorable performance will simply be worse. Do not waste your money. At this point if your going to be upgrading your computer I say go with a motherboard first, specifically one with AGP. www.pricewatch.com is your friend when it comes to finding parts. Depending on your cpu and Ram type, you could easily upgrade both your cpu and motherboard and possibly your ram as well for under $150. You could do the cpu and motherboard for sub $100, and depending on your current cpu, the motherboard could cost you as little as $60. This is the direction you want to consider, you will see a much larger gain in performance from this then you would a pci vid card.

If you want post your specs and the money you have available to spend and Ill post a few prices and links for you to work with.

    Things I need to know.

Cpu type/speed, Ram type ie DDr or SD, Current video card or if its integrated say so.  This is the basic info and what is important currently.

No!!!!!!  The worst thing you can ever do is buy an MX card.  They are horrible cards.  Most games have directx9 now, the MX series does not support it.  So you won't be able to play any decent looking games.

Of course I have to wonder why you do not have an AGP slot?  You other specs are important.

You should still be able to play WoW.  It's graphics are so easy that it can be played on a Geforce 2 or even an integrated chip on the motherboard.  So as long as your comptuer meets the rest of the specs I do not see a problem.

The only other game I can think of would be DAOC as long as you got the 5200 FX card.  If you have a 1.5 gig CPU then you can play the latest expansion.  If you had a 1 gig CPU you could play everything else except for the latest expansion.  You might need to turn some of the graphics down since you do not have an AGP slot.

In reality, it might be better to save the money on the graphics card, game, and monthly fee.  Instead spend the money buying a new motherboard, cpu, and videocard.  Doesn't need to be great, but once you have done that you will have a lot more options.  Right now Fry's Electronics has an AMD 2500 + motherboard for $80.  Spend $70 dor 512 MB of DDR ram, and $100 on a vid card and you should be set for at least the next couple of years.

Well that tells me what i was already going to be doing. When i get a job im going to sink all my money into building my own pc. i will have a excellent cpu, incredible vid card, of course 1 possibly 2 gigs ram, im going for the custom. acrylic side window, specialized front panel, and more. but right now im stuck in this jobless world that i live in right now. will the first everquest and most of its expansions work on integrated graphics. if so then i may just get that for now and then swap over to something newer. as for memory my current fix is at 384(128 and 256) my processor is amd athlon 1.5 ghz i think i will have to check when i get home...if i remember.

For graphics I would recommend Lineage II. Foe swords, magic etc any fantasy MMO has these. For a massive world EQ. For PvP I would wait for Guild Wars which is coming soon and has all of this.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

I think the best bet out there is World of Warcraft I am playing that now and it is fun.  I also think you might like Dark Ages of Camelot.  Anarchy Online is fun as well.  There are a couple of games coming out you might look into,  Dark and Light and Mourning.  Hope this helps!

As far as I am concerned Anarchy Online is one of the best MMORPG's on the market today, wih many expansions like Notum Wars, Alien Invasion, Shadowlands and maybe many more coming out in later dates, AO has to be the best MMOPRG anywhere.  It's also free for a year which is antoher big plus.  AO IS SUPA LEET.  PWNSOR EVERYONE PHEARS IT.  It is a good game.  ANyone agree? HUH?

It's a philosophy, Can you figure it out?

I recommend WoW to anyone who is relatively new to the genre. EQOA doesn't exactly make you a noob to MMOG, but it certainly doesn't make you a veteran.

Personally, I recommend you sample all of them if you can. Many of the older MMOGs on the market can be obtained very cheaply, and you can see what you like and don't like. Of the list of valid contenders:

Ultima Online is a venerable giant, and they have a Gold Trial (details ).
    here

EverQuest is still the king of MMOG, still the watermark...you can probably obtain a decent client with most of the expansions with 30 days free for about 19.95.

Asheron's Call is a great game to try, though the graphics are almost painful...probably can get for $5 with 30 days free

I recently obtained DAoC for 14.95 which had all but the most recent expansions...DAoC defines realm combat in MMOG today (debatable, but fairly valid).

Anarchy Online is the first Sci-Fi MMOG (and arguably the best...not counting EVE which is a different game altogether). Anarchy Online can be played for free right now, but the game has a very steep learning curve...I don't recommend it until you are feeling more like a pro.

Star Wars: Galaxies often has a trial program, but I also saw the game on sale at Target for <$20. I don't recommend this as a starter, though...but a good game option if you are a Star Wars fanatic.

Beyond that list, you can try plenty out...but the key point I'm trying to make is that for about $50 you can probably try out all the major MMOGs that most of us cut our teeth on. The best news of all is that you will have an account in each of those MMOGs that you can reactivate whenever you please. This is a huge plus, since you may decide to revisit some of them from time to time and it's extremely cheap for a month of play.

That narrowed the list down alot. how much do you currently have to spend?

Oh and no EQ will not run on integrated graphics, neither will EQ2, wow, Lineage 2, Anarchy Online, SWG, or most any other mmorpg. UO would be the only excetion to this rule. It would run on the Nforce2 integrated graphics, but that is about it and based off your spends I can guarantee you do not have that particular motherboard.

So let me know how much you specifically have to spend and ill tell you what your options are, however right now it is looking like Ultima Online is going to be your best bet, especially since you can download it and try it completely free.

  • BendenBenden Member Posts: 103

Hmmm integrated graphics  image. Depends. You told us earlier it could be mx or nvidia 5200. What's important now is the graphic chip (if it's at least 3D accelerated) integrated in your motherboard. Anyway, the most successfull mmorpg at the moment, with low hardware specs requierments is WoW.

If your computer is not "strong" enough right now, there a very few non 3D mmorpg. Also means not very very good graphics. Thinking of Ultima online (you even have free shards, not sure about if its legal though).

Otherwise i'm afraid you have to wait for a better computer.

    my 2 cents.

  • DekothDekoth Member Posts: 474

He was talking about upgrading to the mx or 5200, not had.

As to where he stands right now, I guess I at first found myself a bit taken aback by the fact someone still has a computer this slow to play games on. From what I am reading thus far outside UO he is not going to be playing much outside some pretty hefty upgrading. I am hoping/assuming he has a playstation 2, if that is the case that gives a bit more hope. As to WoW, not even wow is going to perform on those specs..due to the hardware requirement I honestly doubt it would even install. Even if it did the graphics would have to be turned down so much that quite honestly UO would look better. Now If he has a PS2 that is going to be his best bang for his money currently, As he can get FFXI with the harddrive and everything he needs including the internet adaptor if he does not have already for about $100. Not a bad investment to get the game and hardware necessary to play for that, where as to get his computer up to the specs necessary to play any mainstream mmo, Off the top of my head Its going to be a Minimum of $150 not even including the game, honestly It will likely be more like $180 ~ $200 As I sincerely doubt his psu is going to be up to snuf. He is definitally in a rough spot, I think the saying is "champaign taste on a beer budget"

As to idea's outside the PS2 option,

Motherboard and cpu are going to be first..period.

At a bare min, I would recommend a sempron 2200+ combo, there is one on pricewatch.com including a decent motherboard for $87.30 shipped. Now While I normally do not recommend a budget processor for gaming, I am here for cost purposes. That and the sempron is not that bad, either way its still a ton faster then his current. Now this of course is a DDr board so his old ram is toast, 512mb DDR ram pc 2100 on pricewatch..$33.99 shipped. Again faster ram is better but 512mb ddr is far superior to 384 of SD.. And finally a vid card..It breaks my heart to recommend a budget vid card..but I cant see any way around it.. best value is a Geforce FX 5500 256mb AGP for $77, the 128mb 5200 he was looking at is $45..For $30 I would not trade the performance..but its his money..I would at least get the 256mb 5500.

So there is an upgrade option ranging between $166.50 ~ $198.29, Thats the minimum to get this pc up to handle Wow or the equalavent..And Still I question his psu and it needing replacement, while I only view that as another $35 or $50 if you get a decent case...to someone without a job..thats a fair amount.

My honest blunt recommendation..Either go with the FFXI for ps2 if you have one, or go with UO for now until you can afford to upgrade. That monthly fee adds up quick, honestly you may want to avoid mmorpgs and go a game more like guildwars which is fairly light on the requirements and no monthly.

  • BarryManilowBarryManilow Member UncommonPosts: 701

If you have a good computer and can afford 21 dollars a month, I would go for the All Access Pass that SoE offers to its customers.  With that All Acess Pass you can play 5 online games which includes EverQuest, Everquest 2, and Star Wars online.

You can do that or you can pay 15 dollars a month for one game.  To me Sony offers the better product, and better quality and service.

He didn't say friends he said 'fiends'. Fiends are like evil minions, so he must be the devil, which is why he is supporting WoW because Blizzard is owned by the devil. He took over when he sued them for making a game based on his likeness (Diablo).
