And when they DO go F2P, they will be refunding all those lifetime subs they sold, right?

Right? Hello? Is this thing on?

Oh my lord. Sounds like some of you need to get organized and form your own "TEA Party" movement and name yourselves something. I guess if you got nothing else to do knock yourself out.

All this nerd rage posts make for fun reading. Not once has a poster on these forums or any forums convinced me to buy or not to buy a game. Either get the trial or wait for a buddy key and make an educated decision yourself if you find the game fun. You know yourself better than anyone. Even if the game is not an amazing success who says you won't find the game fun? Tastes vary, and discovery is more entertaining than reading advice on a forum.

Yep they can call themsleves the Tea Baggers.

1.) Quoting for some reason is not as easy as it used to be. I wish a technicion would find out what the trouble is.

2.) To the guy that suggested some posters form their own teaparty, (I'd quote hime, but see number 1) I never use this site either on making a decision to try a game. But it is a good indicator of what the hardcore MMO community is thinking.

    Fact- New Movie= Box sales

Fact- Commercials on re runs=- Box sales

the evidence is clear- sell a few - 2 or three years?  that is a lifetime

Cryptic are finished when STO goes down.....I mean really, who is ever going to buy from such a money grabbing company as Cryptic again?  They have done a number on the ST MMO fans, anyone with common sense can see this.

Release rushed out game with barely enough content to keep an average gamer going for 3 weeks.

Duplicate the missions, graphics, planets etc over and over to create the said content.

Hold back a load of essentials for the C-Store like Respecs, races, ships etc

Make as many different box editions as possible to maximise the fast cash.

They made their profit in the first week but the price they will pay is 'ONCE BITTEN'!!!

Cryptic is over, they have shown their true colours and they are vile and discusting imo.

well im enjoying the game very much. I hope that cryptic can keep all the new content coming like they have. just my opinion.

Have No Fear Cohas is here!!!

It's already a niche game, with far fewer subs that an IP like ST should have. This is just what you get for making an mmo in 2 years, sadly cryptic can't even learn from this, because their business plan is to create another skeleton-mmo in less than 2 years.

    It's a rubbish re-skinned, ultra-light, repetive piece of poo.

"It's already a niche game, with far fewer subs that an IP like ST should have."

    yes.

there are alot of trek fans in the sense that they watch the shows and movies and it stops there

i have met ex military guys, gals, etc that all like trek withhout going to wierdo about it

they should have skipped the "mmo"  crowd all together - and catered to these

but they seem to have wated to cater to no one or both or something

they got many things really well.  then they expanded them ? and left the rest?

how about the exact opposite- have the space battles the climax of the tale- not the body

After the Advisory Council issues over the past couple of days, I think its downward spiral just accelerated. I think it will last a good year, and possibly become F2P.  It already has an item store, so maybe that's the idea for the future all along.

  • Darth_OsorDarth_Osor Member Posts: 1,089

As much of an all time disaster this company and game are, the only way STO shuts down in less than a year is if Atari goes under, or if they lose the license for the IP. Not sure how bad they have to eff up to get the license pulled, but it looks like they're trying.

are there games that have like 10 players sitting around? (still running but kinda vacant?)

they should package all of them together and sell "ghost town"  a disc with these

Agreed but you can't seem to tell all those people who visit forums this they just don't beleive it with proclamations of shut down in a year or two and conspiracy theories abound about a company being evil simply because they "want your money".  Newsflash mmorpg community they all want your money and truth be told the only interest any of them have in your feelings is whether we are entertained enough or not to continue to pay them nothing more nothing less.

    [Mod Edit]

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Agreed but you can't seem to tell all the drama queens who visit forums this they just don't beleive it with proclamations of shut down in a year or two and conspiracy theories abound about a company being evil simply because they "want your money".  Newsflash mmorpg community they all want your money and truth be told the only interest any of them have in your feelings is whether we are entertained enough or not to continue to pay them nothing more nothing less.

The complacent attitude and siding with incompetent studios against fellow players from people like yourself are why companies like Cryptic can continue to release bad games and never be accountable.

People like you will always dismiss others calling a company out for their failings as "drama queens" or haters so as long as there are enough of you guys, the money will flow to Cryptic, and the unfinished games will be spit out every two years.

I'm curious as to how long you'll defend these practices? Cryptic is releasing another reskin of the engine in 2 years. When and if that game follows the same pattern, will you still dismiss fellow players as drama queens? How many bad games does Cryptic have to release for you to think that maybe the criticism is warranted, and not just haters?

Nevermind, it doesn't matter. I'll just say I find your attitude disagreeable and leave it at that.

It's unlikely that they'll "shut-down" any time soon...as it's incredibly cheap to keep an MMO going on life support (hosting fee's & 1 or 2 low level tech drones). The variable in that is of course is whatever deal they might have needed to make to get and hold the license for the IP...but none of us are privy to the details of that.

It's unkown where Cryptics financials are at this point. It's very difficult for most subscription based software services (and that's what MMO's are in essence) to come close to breaking even on thier development costs from initial sales. Most such services live or die by thier monthlies. Since we don't know what Cryptics expenses were (let alone thier sales) and what royalties they might have to pay...it's really impossible to say whether they made thier money back from box sales. It's possible....but thier Development costs really had to be incredibly thin...and they would have had to gotten a really good deal for the license from the IP as well.  Given what we can see of STO publicaly...that may just have happaned.

Of course, the best way to get a handle on that may be to check out what's written between the lines in Atari's next stock-holder report. If I remember right...I think the last one touted a pretty heavy loss due to expenses from Cryptic...but that would have been too early to have accounted for STO income, I think.

There is loads of new content. You just have to pay for some more Cryptic points or get a lifetime subscription to see it.

Bill Roper is like the kiss of death to an MMO, he should have never left Blizzard.

In the meantime NCSoft just registered the title "City of Heroes 2". I'll bet the guys at Cryptic are kicking themselves for ever letting go of that title and leaving mama NCSoft's teet.

Dunno I know more that a couple people on the GW and the Aion West team...NCsoft is one of the worst employers in the industry, the only way Jeff Grubb will tollerate them is he works as a contractor for Anet and NCsoft dosen't even look in his direction much less speak to him....that is some heavy dislike,

A big reason I'd never ever buy another product from Cryptic is the incredibly blatant greed they display. They don't even try to hide it.

Think about it. They release an unfinished, unpolished game, even by MMO standards. They charge a box price same as "good" MMOs, they charge a monthly fee same as others. Then they charge for everything the cheap bastids should have had in game in the item shop.

In short, they want to collect box price, monthly fee, and item store. They want the money from a subscription game, a F2P game, and a box price, all for a game that has less content and polish than some F2P games.

Mark my words, they'll quadruple-dip by charging for expansions too. Expac that will undoubtedly contain content that most games have at release, or patch in free shortly after.

    Disgusting. No ethics.

They charge a sub fee, yet charge for character slots? Charge for ships, charge for respecs, on and on. They make me sick.

So what is the monthly sub for? Used to be to pay for the ongoing development, now the fanboys on the official bords claim it's "Just to access the game, not for content". They change the goal posts to fit the scam.

All this for a game that is virtually Guild Wars in space, and guild wars if free to play.  I make this refference for STO's uncanny resemblence to features that are already in guild wars.  Such as the way you use/ interact with bridge officers, the heavy instancing of the game, and how you will never see another person doing a mission unless you invite em to your group, and so on.

What the buttkissers don't seem to realize is that the reason more items will be put in the C-store is because there isn't many monthly subscribers left. Obviously they love paying $250.00 for a game along with being milked every cent for new content. More power to them. It's their money. I just don't think it will be enough to sustain the game.
