Well they both are quite different games, if you are asking because you are thinking about playing them then I would suggest trying them both out to see what you like better. FFXI is getting some new patches increasing the level cap so I think it will still be around for a while, I also think EQ2 will be around for a while as well. It just depends on what you like better because of how different they are.
Both are older games but as previously stated, the only way to find out is to try both. I'm giving FFXI a go tonight when I get home from work and I'll be checking out Fenrir to see how the population is.
I played EQ2 since it came out and then on to PVP sever when it came live. The end game on both the PVE and PVP is based on raids and groups. The game just got a new expansion and alot new equipment and quest and places to adventure to. If your a PVP player then be ready to spend countless hours doing quests and raids to get the gear you need to be able to hold your own or spend a lot time being single shot and dealing with endless ganking. I went back this weekend to look at the PVE servers and started a new toon on a medium occupied server to find not much in the lower levels of new players and those in the starting zones are someones twink player they are leveling up.
The game content is great , the graphics are sweet in the new areas and the levels 20-40 are fun on PvP (still balanced between classes). I still be playing if SOE would allow for moving toons off a PvP sever to PvE, just don't want to start over from scratch again.

I would say EQ2, last I checked FFXI was a ghost town for new players
