I too dislike choosing humans-- so boring and mundane, in my opinion. I see enough humans irl, lol.
They weirder looking the better. That's why I was Horde in WoW. I also liked the fact that The Horde isn't evil-- just misunderstood...at least, thats what I assume. I quit shortly after the burning crusade... one of the lesser reasons was that I always took pride in The Horde being a gritty, non-human-looking faction...then the damn blood elves were added while the Alliance got the Draenai....disappointing. And now they get Worgen?? I miss the older days when you would see hunch-backed orcs, broad-shouldered Taurens, lanky Trolls and decaying Forsaken fighting against all the other 'humanistic-looking' races...now its all ruined. (and I was a Tauren with an orc and forsaken alts when I was playing)
But back on topic, I usually choose the more grittier races if I can (and if they're not necessarily evil...I like playing the "good" races unless the "evil" ones aren't actually evil)
I just like the deviation from the norm and subconscious roleplaying of the character race to be funner that way.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I usually pick Dwarves in a high fantasy game, I think because Tolkien's The Hobbit was the first fantasy I can remember reading and they have fascinated me ever since.

I have to say that DA's Dwarven culture is probably the best I've seen yet, but with that said, I still generally hate elves/dwarves and other Tolkienesque races because of the incredibly high saturation of them over the years. Human's pretty much the only way for me to go until they come up with more unique races. Had no problem playing other ones in SWG because Wookies are pretty goddamn cool.

My initial characters are almost never humans. I do not like picking humans because usually the vast majority of the player population will pick humans. I like to pick something different, something less played by the player base.
After I start making alts, however, I almost always pick a human female because well... they're usually designed to be the hottest characters in game =P
I nearly always play the smallest race available. They feel like they move a lot faster and the game world always feels a lot bigger. Also I tend to play a pet class so my pet feels a lot bigger relative to myself. I think I just like the idea of having a pet that's 10x bigger than me, hehe.
"The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands, To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming! On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore."
Lump me in with the "whatever fits the class" crowd.
My warriors are typically Dwarf. My archers are tend towards Elf. If I'm playing a mage/priest or something like a paladin then I'll go Human. I'll pick a small race like a Gnome or Hobbit for a stealth class. My necromancers/warlocks are Undead.
It's not an absolute though; I do have occasional attacks of whimsical absurdity and make classes such as Gnome Warrior or Dwarf Rogues. My first character in WoW was one such; a Dwarf Priest that I chose because I wanted to play a healer class and thought a male dwarf with a huge beard and fearsome scowl looked simply hilarious (and fabulous) in a dress.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
well I prefer these races (some may not be in a MMO)...not in any particular order (but they also all depend on the class as well if I like them or not)
1. Goblins (awesome for a sorta evil or evil class)
2. Orcs (awesome for a warrior-like class)
3. Undead (only MMORPG and RPG that lets you play as Undead is WoW that I know of, but they are awesome)
4. Tauren (WoW specific race, and mostly cause I love the native american culture)
5. Dwarves (everyone likes Dwarves )
6. Trolls (only WoW trolls, they look awesome)
7. Dragons (only Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted lets you play as dragons, but this would be my top favorite race to play if it was in more MMOs)
8. Lizard-like race or other reptilian race (they look awesome)
9. Beast-like race (Minotaur etc. I know Shadowbane has/had beast-like races, but not sure if any other MMO does)
and hmm, thats about it for my list. Notice the distinct lack of elves and humans ;P and I don't tend to like short races, except for dwarves and goblins. I kinda like the savage/barbaric races more than the civilized ones.
Row, row, row your mouse, gently across the screen. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
If possible I try to make the most 'badass' looking character I can. Whether it's a human or not depends on the look, but I prefer to pick the monstrous/outlandish races.
I have almost always chosen the 'anything but human' option. I play games, read, watch shows and movies and so on to escape the dull drab uninteresting world of the real, assuming the role of something as mundane as a human in a world where there are so many interesting and better options is silly to me.
Unless...
Unless the only options are drab and boring in comparison or unpleasant to look at, or even if the humans in a game world have some hook that makes me more interested in their options/equipment/storyline/abilities than the other races available.
I must say I'm not too into playing amphibians, or rodents, or trolls(unless they're Tolkein style big ass trolls).
By and large though, the whole point is to play the role of something I'm not, something different.
Originally posted by skeaser I tend to go for the more unique races, I really dislike playing humans. I gravitate towards dwarves, orcs, trolls, dark elves etc.
Odd that your sig is for an LOTR human character, then.
Just curious to see if there was anyone like me who always picks the human race in their MMO. I'm not entirely sure why, but I'm leaning toward "I can relate better to a human character".
Which race do you tend to choose? Humans? The Elves (Light & Dark meat)? The obligitory "short" race? Etc.
I choose elf if I can, females if posible, and I want them to be hot if posible too. If not I can choose half elf or any humanoid race, I usually dont choose human becouse, well, I see humans all the day.
In any fantasy MMORPG I tend to lean more towards female elves, they tend to be so cute looking and the long ears remind me of what I like most, Anthros. ^_^ (by the way I'm a ladies man) XD
As for Human in MMORPG's, personally I don't like playing Human, I think they are a boring choice unless a class is limited in races where Human is the best looking to pick. (example: In WoW the Allaince don't get much of races that can be Warlock which are Human and Gnome, and I would rather choose to be a female Human)
I never pick a human race in any game, if that's possible. I'm already human in my real life
I lean towards dark elves or some ugly races like trolls, usually something evil. But it should be a humanoid race, i don't like races made from animals, like cat or wolf.
By the way, when i saw night elves in WoW i was very dissapointed. I still think it's the ugliest example of what dark elves should not look like.
maybe a bit off-topic, but i never understood males playing females. I understand when someone wants to be a troll, ogre, some animal race or whatever. But just can't understand a healthy, normal male person wanting to play a female. Makes me think he's a transvestite wannabe Sorry if i offend someone. ( Maybe 30% of male gamer population )
Generally speaking, I pick races that provide advantages to my selected class. Since that is starting to become a dying game mechanic its not nearly so important and if race imparts no advantages then I'm more likely to pick Elves as anythnig else.
Probably a hold over from my old D&D RPG games where they could see in the dark and resist poison, even if you couldn't resurrect them. (Though Half-Elves solved some of that)

Ive played a human in just aboout every MMO that Ive spent more than a year on. Humans imo, always seem to have the centerpoint story and their actions are always portrayed as having a very strong affect/effect on the world and the largest dividing affect amongst themselves and their allies.
Take WoW for instance, the humans have been beset by just about every army that has come to azeroth and they have suffered some of the worst consequences of these wars. They are pretty much the ones on the frontline in the thick of battle and standing fast in a dark world becoming more ominous and unforgiving. The same could be said for the other races but the human drama (especially amongst the main human characters like: Wrynn, Jaina, Tirion Fordring, and Rhonin) is something I could understand since they arent out for bloodshed but more out to save their way of life and put an end to the encrouching darkness. The drama of Arthas and his fall and the sacrifice of Bolvar Fordragon was as human as you could get.
True we are surrounded by humans on a daily basis but if you look at our past, you will see that we are just as dark and destructive as any race that fiction could create. just my 2 cents
For some reason, even though I like to try out different races, my main always ends up being a human. I'm especially interested in humans because they seem so versatile in games, and they can succeed in every profession. And, out of all the other races, they always seem to look the nicest.
Yes, it is true that we are humans in real life, but I've always viewed real life humans and ingame humans as being different. And, they certainly seem to be the most influential as a race.

Usually no.
My general fantasy-race-coolness-list, from awesome to not awesome.
FROGLOKS
Dwarves
Goblins (usually)
Warhammer Orcs
Warcraft Trolls
Undead things
Warcraft Orcs
Dark Elves
Humans
Pretty Elves (forest/wood/night elves included)
Gnomes/non-dwarf-midgets (hobbits, halflings)
Things with feathery/butterfly wings
Ratongas (Ratonga? Ratongi?) go somewhere near the top but I couldn't pick where.
Like a few others have said I pick the race that I feel fits my class the best. About the only time I pick human is if I am playing a monk type class.
Dwarf power! Dwarf power!

Depends on the races available to me. I'm about 50/50.
Nope, no more human characters for me. Always pick Elf, Dwarf, or Troll or Orc (if the latter are allowable).

Tired of humans, I see humans all day and have to be around them constantly.
I want something exotic and different. Dwarves, Gnomes, Animal-like humanoids and the like.
No Halflings, elves or Hobbits for me. They still look too human IMO.
