If your going to invest in a new Graphics card then would really advise you to get a dx11 capable one. no point buying a card just for an older format after all.
I will reccomend you, as the other guy said, a Dx 11 card. I've bought the Ati Radeon HD5770 (Mid-high end card) which it should cost $170. Nice price for the great performance you get. Even a little more cheap you can get the HD 5750 that is around $140 i think. Less Performance, but still a nice Mid-low card. IMH you should get an HD 5770 or better if your pocket can handle it. Anyway just my opinion. And no, i'm not an ATI or Nvidia Fanboy, just to get things clear. I always buy the best Price/Performance offer that my pocket can get, i dont care if its red or green.

It all boils down to your budget, I've got machines with both ATI and Nvidia cards in.
Oh and the intended resoloution you want to play at.
I just bought a Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 yesterday, it has 1027 MB of memory and it is able to run the game on full graphics in DX 10 with around 30 FPS. Not to mention it is cheaper than the GTX 260 which only has 900 something MB. Price wise this is a great card as well. Now if you really want to pimp your computer out, I would suggest a GTX 295... Haha. No I will give you some links to some good GTS 250 cards and one GTX 295 if you really want to spend that.

How do I know this? I have both.
You can also wait for the Fermi cards I suppose.
On a side note: Avery are you still playing AoC? If not, do you plan on returning for Godslayer?
I currently play with 2x285`s with just one I can get a nice 30-35 FPS max view, everthing cranked up, everything on apart from Screen Space Ambient Occlusion. The 5870 is slighty better yes all at 19x12.
I have a GTX 480 on pre-order so we shall see what happens there.
I still play AoC, I log on the main game occasionally, but more so on test servers and whatnot.
Try 25 man raids and 48 man sieges, then be a wise-guy. My Geforce 9600GT runs perfectly well when staring at a wall in Tortage too, you know.
Well see if you actually played the game for those 3-4 months instead of staring at a wall in Tortage you might have actually enjoyed the game.
Erm, I did 25 man pve raids and 48 man sieges, yeah. Tier 1, tier 2 raids and about a dozen sieges, plus Kheshatta zergs. The real question, did you? Because if you had done that, you would know by now that AoC requires a NASA comp to run mentioned raids at full graphics.
But, like I said, AoC works perfectly when staring at walls; in raids it sux balls.
What you gotta keep in mind is, last years kings are still kings. They are going to have a significant price slash and still be the powerhouse cards they were before DX11.
I would look at getting last years power house, gtx 275 or higher, i wouldnt buy a dx11 card until 5 or 6 months down the road, when they get their first price cuts.

I run 2 260 gtx maccore bfg cards in sli. In aoc i have every thing cranked 1900x1200 but do not run dx10 an its fine solid 35s or better. Even on raids. Not realy tried it with the new drivers on dx10.last i tried it was ok fps just the shadows blinked in an out.

Wait for nVidia's 400 series to go up (I never buy the first couple of cards available in a new series). Once they have the new generation of video cards out they generally get better relatively quickly.
ATI is reigning supreme currently in the graphics department. Go with an Intel computer and an ATI video card. The 5770 is the best bottom line for AoC, but the 5870 is going to give you some extra "umph"
A 5770 runs AoC fine in raids, but you won't be running at full blast . . which is funny, considering that card will run higher end graphics from countless other games without a hitch, yet the shite programming from FailCom can slow it down in certain situations.
At least go with a 5770, or if you can afford it, get a 5870.

Just replaced a 3870 with the 5770 last Friday, and it was an eye-popping difference. I would prefer to run 5870 for the 256-bit bandwidth, but I couldn't choke down that $400+ price tag (and $300+ for 5850 wasn't much better). The 5770 was a huge performance jump over my old card, with practically the same power consumption. It would have been a bit cheaper at Newegg, but I bought locally at Best Buy (for easier returns) because of some reports of motherboard incompatibility. However, it installed and ran just fine on Win7's default ATI drivers.

Ah lucky you then. After 1 and 1/2 years of playing AoC all my toons are still stuck on Tortage. I can't figure out how to beat the last boss Strom. He's like super hard.

I dunno what you are talking about, I never have any issues with anything in AoC except for some lag, which is my extremely slow internet and not my computer.

I took him down on the first try with a ranger-type.
1) Equip most protective armor and highest-damage weapons.
2) Spend feat points. I got a ranged-damage buff of about 50% for 30 seconds there.
3) Jump in the harbor and swim around instead of fighting thru everything.
4) Pull and kill the bodyguards first, then wait for damage buff to cycle for use.
5) I think I popped HoT health and stamina potions just before I engaged Strom.

I think he might have been being sarcastic...
I really do hope so. A blind cripple could kill Strom.

AoC runs sweet on my ATI 5770. Very solid card.

I have been thinking about upgrading also.
But I am going to wait a few months and see what the prices do. I hope the 5870 drops some after the Nvidia dx11 cards become readily available.
I would suggest if you can hold off for a bit you may end up seeing some prices drop on the ATI cards, at least I hope so
Odd no one pointed out the known issues using ATI cards when playing aoc.
Do tell Crunchy.

If price is an issue, go with the 5850 instead of the 5870. The difference in performance isn't that big.

I decided to wait on a good card because my 4850 handles DX9 fully maxed out with no issues. I will wait until those 5x series drop in price.
