No, your score is not bad. Keep in mind that the total score is simply the lowest score. In your case its the Hard Drive. My Scores are all 7.5 or 7.4 with the hard drive also at 5.9. You could have 7.9 in everything and a crappy hard drive will give you a crappy score. But, 5.9 is not crappy.
A computer with a base score of 4.0 or 5.0 can run new features of Windows 7, and it can support running multiple programs at the same time.
A computer with a base score of 6.0 or 7.0 has a faster hard disk, and can support high-end, graphics-intensive experiences, such as multiplayer and 3?D gaming and recording and playback of HDTV content.
So your computer is doing just fine. You are basically in the top category (5.9 is close enough to 6.0). The index started out just going to 5 but as new technology is released they up the top score. If you wanted a higher score really the only thing you could do was to go to a raid setup or get one of those SSDs.

Thank you for the informative post. Indeed, the base score is the lowest. I did not know the index is constantly going up, that explains the discrepancy between my scores and the other person who mentioned figures above 7.9.
Most people will only have a 5.9 score simply because of the hard drives we use.
If you want an easy, cheap way to up your computer's performance look into buying a cheap USB thumbdrive or SD memory card with a USB adapter and use it for ReadyBoost. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost

I don't trust that built in piece of crap gauge to say how good my computer is. ^_^ I know my hardware in here and I know it's better than a 5.8.
Ok, so what is your computer hardware specification?

Atleast they fixed it in Windows 7. If you were on Vista it would say all your numbers are 5.9.
