    The Count of Monte Cristo.

I couldn't tell you why other then that it was one of the, if not the, most engrossing, deep, and entertaining novels I have ever read.

"The greatest trick the devil played on humanity in the 20th century was convincing them that he didn't exist." (Paraphrasing) C.S. Lewis

"If a mother can kill her own child, what is left before I kill you and you kill me?" -Mother Teresa when talking about abortion after accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979

enders game by orson scott card. who is a author with more degrees and expertise then most. He has a degree in political science, philosphy, and i think he did some science for a little bit in college i think a liittle bit of physics. so his Science Fiction books are extraordinary and he actually thinks things out and his prediction of how the world will be is i think quiote acurate. it is an extrordinary series in the fact that he has all points covered and thought everything through, and not only is it artful adn creative, but  thorough, and realistic.

I think my favorite fantasy book (single book not series) was The Legend of Huma from Dragonlance.  It had all the elements start to finish of a great fantasy book.

Bah! I'm too much of a Geek to choose just one, but the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov is ridiculously(sp) good, as well as Dune, Something Wicked this way Comes, From the Dust Returned, and Fharenheit(sp) 451 all by Ray Bradbury are also good reads, LOTR of course (can't forget the classics::::20::) The Giver (can't remember the author) there is probably like a hojillion more I'm forgetting but these are what come to mind.

"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

Im reading Fareinheight 451 for my English Class. It's a pretty good book and the author wrote it in the 50's so the predictions he made were moslty very accurate.

Read the Odyssey, then watch O Brother Where Art Thou? The movie is far from the book, but you can definitely see the main story in the movie, as well most of the characters/creatures, though they don't go by the same names.

I only say that because I just got done doing that. Other favorite books/authors:
    Anne Rice
The Dark Tower series - Stephen King
    Discworld
    Earthsea
Takedown: The Fall of the Last Mafia Empire (picked it up on a whim, very pleased with it)

OK, I've been reading for a LONG time and have almost a library of books that I own, I'm going to go down the line and write of the ones I've liked the most or had the biggest impact on me (be it entertainment or otherwise), and this is in no particular order by the way, and most of what I read is Sci Fi/Fantasy, but I've read a LOT OF IT---

***-- Ender's Game (and he rest of the series) / Orson Scott Card

    ***-- Battlefield Earth / L. Ron Hubbard

-- The Galactic Center Series / Gregory Benford

-- The Wheel of Time Series / Robert Jordan

***-- The Fountainhead / Ayn Rand (forgot how to spell it, but you know...)

-- Path of the Fury / David Weber

-- Lightning, Watchers, The Bad Place, Fear the Night / Dean Koontz

-- The Gunslinger Series, Firestarter, Peter Straub / Steven King

-- The Vampire Chronicles / Anne Rice

***-- Forge of God, Anvil of Stars / Greg Bear

***-- The Lord of the Rings / Tolkien

Ok, these are the books that I recall at the moment, and I've probably forgotten a few. But all of the books are EXCELLENT, and a few a re true classics in their own rights, so check them out. You may enjoy them as much as I have! Also, don't just look for these books, the authors themselves write mainly fantastic books, so you can't go wrong image

I liked Andromeda Strain and The Sphere both by Michael Crichton. Those books are good, they mostly use science as their theme. The Hobbit is also a good book.

If you like Michael Criton read The Great Train robbery really good book but it is not a scifi.. just to warn you ...

well since you mentioned somthing religious i wouldnt mind giving a couple thoughts...
Have you ever tried to sit down and read the bible straight through? Its probably one of the hardest things to do
My preacher/other intelligents suggest reading certain books out of order.
what do you think would benefit from that?
