Hate to burst your bubble kid, but it's pretty much boring everywhere. Talk to some kids who have spent their whole lives in those places and they'll tell you how fucking boring they think is too and why.

Living in a city just means that there's a larger concentration of assholes everywhere you go. Businesses do close, and the places you can hang out at 3 a.m. on a weekday are not places most people would want to be if they weren't chasing one addiction or another.

The problem is you, not your location.

When I was 14-30 I would agree with you OP - that it must suck being in smalltown - , but I was lucky enough to grow up in a cool city.

I grew up in Edinburgh city. Amazing pubs and the most diverse club scene imo in the UK and even better than Tokyo, which is where I have lived on and off since 28 years old. I totally loved spending my tweenage years in Edinburgh as there were ska clubs, northern soul clubs, mod clubs, manchester music clubs, disco clubs, easy listening clubs, punk clubs, dance music clubs of all varieties and so on, and on all nights of the week. There was even a Smiths/Morrissey club one night a month lol.

But these days I find myself hating the big cities lol. I live in Tokyo now but I am getting old. First opportunity I get when holidays come, then I am off to the most remote and depopulated island in Japan I can find to camp and fish and swim - this is my paradise situation now.

I don't know how old you are, but if you are in your teenage or tweenage years I would get outta your town and into any city that has an amazing club scene. Get yourself geared up and go shake your thang on that dance floor before you get old and boring like me because old guys like me would gladly kill half the world to have those old days back again.

    Regards

    Pretty much.

100,000 is quite a bit of people. I think most people in the US live in towns smaller than 50,000. Even a town of 50,000 is alot to me though. Mine right now has 12,000 and is built for about 2,000, we have 2 colleges so I think the actual population is somewhere closer to 25,000 though. I have to drive 45miles to go see a movie, go out to eat at resturuant that's not mexican food, and pretty much anything else I want to do. We have a Walmart and...... well we got a Walmart.

I have no idea what the kids around here do, I didn't grow up here. I grew up in Richmond, VA and Miami, FL and I felt the same way as the OP about both of those places. Miami does suck, it's not what you see on TV. But Richmond is freaking awesome. When I went back a few years ago and hung out with some old friends I had blast.

I was born in a fairly small town in Illinois, my graduating class has around 100 people in it.  Then I moved to downtown Chicago for a few years, and now I live in a more suburban area.

You need a balance.  I wanted to kill myself after a year or so of living in the traffic and personal space consuming big city.

Still love Chicago though.  Live 50 miles away.

Seriously?  12,000 plus the college population and no movie theater?  I believe you but it suprises me.  The town I went to high school in had a population of 1000 or maybe a little less and it had a theater and bowling alley.

The closest town to were I grew up, however, had a population of less than 300 and had nothing but one bar.

They had a movie theater back in the 70's but it shut down. They just started renovating it a couple months ago and it's supposed to be called "University Plaza" with a few shops and a small theater. But, the building has been pretty much been untouched since the 70's, so you can just imagine how long it's going to take them to fix it up.

I lived here for 6months when I was 16 between my move from Richmond to Miami, and they had a bowling alley back then. I spent most of my time there, but now it's an old person Civic Center or something like that. I really have no idea what it is, but it's not a bowling alley anymore, the parking lot is ALWAYS full, and the only people I've ever seen in it are about 70++.

I guess part of the reason why this town is dead, is because one of the colleges is a Baptist University and we're in the bible belt. That University holds alot of the licenses and what not to keep the town small. Because, the smaller the town is, the more they can charge for tuition. It's also a dry county with just a few liquor licenses. The VFW owns one, the country club owns one, and that University holds like 20.

Honestly, if we just got the vote passed to make this county wet, I think it would blow up. My college has a population of 6,500 and the private college has a population of 4,000 to 6,000.

My town has like 800 people. There's not much to do here, so we make our own entertainment.

I love small towns.  I grew up in a small town in the south, its funny how people in small towns choose to spend their leisure vs. people who grew up in big cities.

In the little city I grew up in, I adapted a vast knowledge of music and movies.  Being bored as kids, we'd pass the time smoking pot and/or drinking while listening to music and just bull shitting.  We'd hang out conversing, "experimenting" as we would critique music and movies on the weekends and nightly during the hot humid summers.  Not having any place to hang out aside from graveyards and barns kept us inside mostly listenining to the new Slayer, Metallica, Venom (the 80's were awesome)..whatever and watching every B horror movie we could get our hands on (Full Moon Entertainment anyone?)

As an adult, I moved to a small beachside community.  Its a lot different here. Much more mellow here.  Being a beach community the kids around here spend their days surfing and are much more active.

Ive travelled a lot in my job, and I really enjoy travelling and visiting bigger cities.  I love the culture that small towns lack.  However, I wouldnt want to live in one.. or raise my kids in one.

So, my logic is.. live in small towns... visit big cities.

I grow up in a small  town (in fact this is the medium size for any town at Spain, 300.000 habitants) at the north of Spain. I like the city but i need open fields and nature around me. I don't even like interior cities or towns, without sea.

I visited Paris when i was a child, then Lisboa, and London the last summer. I liked London, but i wouldn't live there more than a month. Too much noise, pollution, crowds... The people were nice, but i think persons are more open to strangers and they are kinder with others in small towns. Maybe the villages are the best places in the world if they have the stores and services you need.

so true. I grew up outside a small town in a smaller town. Although me and my friends usually just hang out in the larger small town. It had a movie theatre, bowling alley, and parks.... but most of the time we sit around and bull shit, and at one time 4 wheeling and dirt bike riding. Then there was also baseball and video games... like pyro said, you just make your own entertainment. 3 years ago i moved to CA and i hate it, although i dont live in a congested area, you cant just go sit outside and look at the scenery because you got people living all around you. Pretty irritating and depressing if your not used to it.

Lived here in Toronto for 2/3 of my entire life and I still find myself being bored from time to time.  The population I think is sitting somewhere around ~5 million at the moment.  To contrast that I went to Rhode Island a few months ago and that state is littered with small towns... hell I'd call the whole state a small town... and I found myself just as bored.  I think if I had to live in a very small town I'd either become an alcoholic or a chronic stoner just so I could entertain myself.  This is however a view born of my current situation though so it could be different from the other perspective

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
