I would like to try out AoC again after being away for a long time. I'm just wondering if I would be losing out by choosing a PVE server rather than a PVP? Can you still enjoy a lot of PVP on a PVE server? If so, are there certain zones, objectives or scenarios?
I'm quite keen on a PVP server but worried about getting ganked non-stop, some I can survive but too much and I'll probably just give up on the game totally.
Any suggestions on what EU server to choose?

At launch, I played PVP. It was fun until I got ganked by ToS and other rangers.
I started again about a year later with the whole massive patch on the way. I chose PvE at the time and it was great. People were very nice and I could still PvP at the mini-battheground things and go to that PvP-area.
I'd chose PvE if I were you.
I forgot which server I picked, but it was the biggest PvE server around.
Life is pretty dull on the most populated PVE server (Crom) , other then raiding and dungeons there is not much u can do , pvp wise is kind of static if u ask me.
I would go for pvp if i were u Fury in particular , lots of action , sure u will get ganked but given the well balanced nature of the classes if u get the hang of it , u will be fine and trust me once u get the hang of it , u will love to pvp nonstop.
And btw my main characters are on Crom but i find it more entertaining to play on Fury nowadays.
Why did you stop playing?

Can anyone attack you, or do you have to be within a certain lvl range to attack / get attacked?
I can't quite remember but isn't there 2 fractions? Is it only the opposing fraction that can attack you?

Pros for PvP server
Is more fun when you get into game as you need tactics and strategy to get resources, sneak about and so forth.
Skills are more important.
More group work.
Resource zones and guild cities are kind of boring
Cons for PvP server
Levelling involves interruptions by jerks with no life.
Groups are close to essential to avoid before said jerks, even then this may not help if you are 30 and they are 80.
You have no choice to PvP, whereas on PvE server you can choose to go to a PvP zone.
Wrap Up
Basically PvP is lots of struggling, however many see this as a plus as you learn your character and PvP better. I have heard of some people levelling on a PvE server then payign to move their character to a PvP server. Likewise the other way though. I have also heard that PvP servers have more immature players, however I doubt there is much difference as I notice PvE servers appear to have just as many. End game is mostly PvE raids irrelevant of server type, however the reintroduction of PvP objectives may change that.
Personally
I am a PvE person, however I often wish there was a bit more PvP, so I can see the temptation. In the end it is up to whether you want a choice to PvP, or be restricted.
I'm not a big fan of PVP. I might do few minigames but thats about it.
When I bought AoC at launch I rolled to Fury. Needless to say that for a pve-oriented person like me, it was pretty bad experience. Rangers and sins were constantly ganking me while trying to level or gather etc.
I rolled to Crom when I resubbed and Im happy with my desicion. No more ganksquads steamrolling me all the time.
Its up to you, if you like a challenge while playing, roll PVP.
Start at the PvE server to learn you the basics. Afterwards can you make a char on a PvP server but youll get ganked a lot unless you got the basics right first.
Play up until you at least made sanctum a few times, then make a PvP char and play for a while until you decide which you prefer. You can still PvP on a PvE server, in outlands, minigames and sieges.
PvP servers don't really have the usual 2 or 3 sides, it is free for all unless you are in the same group. They tried some cultural PvP servers but that didn't really work since you could group with the other cultures but not hurt your own, the balance really was weird.
Thanks for all the replies and info. It sounds like it's a bit too hardcore for me with a PVP server. The fact that a lvl80 can attack a lvl30 definitly puts me off together with a free for all. I'll try a PVE server!
Thanks!

I recently subscribed to AoC and chose to roll on a PvP server. Now that I've made it past Tortage, I'm finding the amount of PvP I encounter to be enjoyable and manageable - not frustrating, as I've encountered at times in other games.
You are likely to run into hostilities around certain ganker hot-spots (mostly in parts of towns where the guards are not patrolling), but rarely has PvP interfered with my questing outside of these hot-spots. It's enough to keep me on my toes when adventuring in the wilderness, and satisfy my thirst for blood when I go looking for it, but when I'm not much in the mood for PvP, I find it easy enough to avoid it.
I should note, I have several things going for me: I play as an Assassin, which through stealth, allows me a bit more control in choosimg when to fight and when not to. I also play with my husband, a Ranger, who's tracking ability helps to keep us from being attacked off-guard. Lastly, I'm currently playing during New Zealand's prime time hours - when most players from North America are already asleep.
If you do decide to roll on a PvP server, I recommend going for Cimmeria (RP-PvP), as it seems Tyranny's population is drying up, with many of it's players transferring over to Cimmeria.
Edit: Added some more paragraph breaks to make it easy on the eyes...
Edit edit: In response to a level 80 being able to gank you - they can, but the majority of 80s that I've passed or that have passed me simply do not bother. I remember only 1 time that I've ever been ganked by someone who vastly out-leveled me, and that was a level 70 Conqueror who killed me when I was almost level 30.
Also, the vast majority of PvP encounters I've experienced are either 1v1 or 2v1, which is quite manageable, compared to, say, the groups of 6+ Elyos that used to used to steamroll me as an Asmo in Aion.
