A New Machine

jammertk10jammertk10 Member CommonPosts: 88

So, I'm looking to either build or buy a brand new rig. I recently had a huge house fire, where, sadly my computer died, insurance is paying for a brand spankin' new set-up.

I looked to build my own with specs like -

CPU - Intel i7-920-930

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard, something with USB 3.0, or 2.0, and that will support an i7 processor

Graphics - I was thinking two 5770s in Xfire

Drive - Blu-ray

HDs - 1 SSD for the OS and 1 HD for everything else

If I build I need some suggestions on.... Memory, Case, Cooling, Power Supply, Input devices, sound card, and a monitor, and I need specifics (opinions) on Drive, SSD, HD.

The other option I just looked into was an Alienware, I can get one with...

i7-920

two 5870s

1TB HD

And that's pretty much it, the main thing calling to me on this is the two 5870s, I mean I can imagine buying those seperate at the galling cost of $800 total!

Any and all suggestions help!

    You should go something like:

    920/930/750

    basic mobo

    6/4 gigs of basic ram

    Samsung f3 hdd

    Single 5770/5850/5870

    Antec 300 case

    corsair 500 watt psu

intel, indilinx or sandforce based ssd for OS

Basic build, it's fast enough and doesn't cost you a fortune.

why ntel?if you dont plan to build a system fully built and optimised for direct cache access(beween the network and processor cache.

    i would go amd!

if you do go intel tho,32 nm process is the way to go ,the i7 you mention was a 40 nm if i recall]they re supposed to have a new i7 32 nm soon if its not out already 6 core if i recall

but like i say intel is overkill unless you plan to do like ccp go overkill

but i suggest you stay away from intel

nice to brag about but out of this reality pricewise

buy an amd the biggest baddest proc you can find

check on amd site for the ally that makes mobo since you ll live with it a long time

ssd second gen is mandatory etc

intel are good if if you go older generation

one thing i love about intel

you can all make it intel

whatever you chose dont go older then 40nm generation proc

if its 40 nm quad support dca for mobo, network and cpu the rest you chopse as you like but all intel is the way to go in my book if you got intel.

WOW, you are so ... the minority. Intel processors are worth every extra penny you decide to spend on them. They are cooler, faster, and better in every possible way. I personaly run a Quad core AMD because I am a cheap bastard, who regrets not spending the extra bucks on an Intel based system. Nuff said.

Gamers build rigs for the future, and building an AMD based machine would be building a machine for now. Some of you may disagree, but you would be the minority. Tha dude has 2 G's to drop on a machine, and the Alienware ( brand is beginning to gather a bad name due to Dell's purchase) sounds ok. I would consider building one myself though. It is always nice to choose your own motherboard.

Yeah, the mobo thing is one of my biggest problems, I can pretty much find everything that goes on it just fine, but finding a decent, gaming motherboard seems to be one hell of a challenge. On a side note, I've gone with Intel processors for quite a long time, it's almost a brand loyalty for me.....

Thanks for all the help so far :)

Try and configure what you are looking for on Ibuypower.com

They're a reputable company. Best bang for your buck usualy. Unbelievable laptop prices.

I would recomend them before Alienware now.

Oi...does one need more than a single 5870? Haha. But if insurance is covering it, might as well go all out! Right? =P

    I'd go for a:

    CPU: i7 980X

    Mobo: GigaByte GA-X58A-UD7

    Memory:  12GB Corsair Dominator

    GPU: 5870 (x2)

    HD: SSD and HDD

    PSU: 1000W

Cooling: Thow in some nice liquid cooling while you're at it, hehe.

I always like building my own pc and hand picking each part.

You mentioned something about finding a good gaming mobo... try Gigabyte or Asus or even MSI.

For the money try something like this.

    Component

    Item

    Price

    Processor

    Intel Core i7-860

    $289.99

    Motherboard

    Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P

    $184.99

    Memory

    Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333

    $104.99

    Graphics

    Gigabyte Radeon HD 5850

    $309.99

    Storage

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB (6Gbps)

    $119.99

    Samsung SH-S223L

    $26.99

    Lite-On iHOS104-08 Blu-ray reader

    $69.99

    Audio

    Asus Xonar DX

    $89.99

    Power supply

    Corsair TX650W

    $99.99

    Enclosure

    Antec P183

    $149.99

    Total

Buy this complete system at Newegg

    $1,436.90

This should handle any game out and give you the best parts that are the best bang for the buck in your price range.

    Played: MCO - EQ/EQ2 - WoW - VG - WAR - AoC - LoTRO - DDO - GW/GW2 - Eve - Rift - FE - TSW - TSO - WS - ESO - AA - BD

This actually looks like a good system, I live by a Microcenter, where I can get an Intel i7-920 for 199.99, I'd then take the saved money and put it towards one 5870 hehe :) Other than that this all checks out really good! Thank you for the hard work, still not 100% decided though :)

    Many thanks! :)

    i7 - ATI HD 5850

A build I threw together using your motherboard. Crossfire is just pointless at the moment, there's no games that really call for a need for it. You'll get more performance out of just using a single 5850 than those 2 5770's. Later if you ever think you need more FPS in games, just buy another 5850 and you'll be good to go again. I think it will be another year or two until you can justify having to buy another though. I didn't pick out a monitor, I gotta leave something up to you, eh? :)

An amd processor suits you better if you are not using heavy multimedia suites like Adobe Media Suite etc.

Amd gets you 90% of the power of the best core i7 processor in most games and sometimes the phenom II even surpasses Intel.

But stick to whatever you like, there are thousands of intel/nvidia fanboys out there who don't want to realize, that amd gives nearly the same performance for 200-300 $ less.

Exactly. And that's the point. He's not paying for it...his insurance is.

Look dude, the guy said he wants an i7 to begin with in his OP.  Obviously this guy is in a situation wheremoney isn't something he's worried about with the build. Otherwise I'm sure he would've chosen it.
