The bias of an mmo site

When people give a rating/hype about a game a lot of times it is extremely biased. People will play a few games and pick one that they like the most and want to see the best and give it an undeserving rating. Then they will give the games ranked higher then it low rating so their game goes higher even though they don't take a good look at the games.

This isn't just a guess based on rating changes, I've seen people talk about it. In the comments they say how the game "Doesn't deserve to be ranked", "[should] get out of number 1", and "the company is terrible don't trust its games". So games that look good pop into number 1 then they drop because people don't like it.

This seems very common with F2P games especially because they are released fairly quickly and they have a short spurt of hype before a free beta for everyone. In the past few days i've seen 2 specific titles barely get enough ratings to show and they looked amazing. When they appeared they were ranked number 1 in the development standings then within an hour they shot down. It took days to get enough people to notice the game, and actually look into it, but then people just give it a rating of 1 to get it out of there. Those two games are Dragon Nest and Battle of the Immortals. The latter just happened today.

I don't know how many people do this but it's terrible. It doesn't give any small title even a chance to get noticed. It's very selfish in my mind and i wish it would stop. But maybe i'm the only one that thinks this. Maybe you are all against me and i'm gonna get a bunch of hate replies but i don't care. Don't vote on a game if you haven't even played/ looked into it.

Past: Can never go back to Wow.
Present: Nothing interesting out.
Future: Looking forward to GW2.

Yup, it happens to a lot of games.  A lot of unfair ratings.  This is why you got to mak sure you read legitamate reviews/ratings about a game because some people vote based on their own biased.

That's exactly why I don't take hype seriously.

I'm not here to complete my forum PVP dailies.

Top Tip ignor any rating system as they are based on personal opinion which is biassed. Instead read up on the game via reviews mainly and any ingame stories from those who play the game. And when i say stories only those between players and not the replies to those who post a "looking for a game is this any good?" as the majoraty of replies wont be exactly true.

I said majoraty because you will get some who post some good advice. It is however hard to work out the good posts from the bad in such a source but they do exist.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

the problem is not undeserving low scores based on experience...it was undeserving high scores based on hype, which is what most F2P titles get.

1 out of 10 sounds about right imo for any F2P title

A real gamer NEVER criticizes games he/she hasn't even played.  Now, arcdevil, tell me what company (or companies) you're working for so I can check out their games to see if they're worth playing.

As to OP, youtube comments reflect more about public opinions than some hired goons disguising as gamers lurking at this site.  So don't worry about the bias; some of their "high-ranking" games are deserted wastelands since people aren't idiots.

I thought that  "Hype" is the thing you rate a game that is not out yet, and a grade and overall rating or score  when you played it.

    Verb

to hype (third-person singular simple present hypes, present participle hyping, simple past and past participle hyped)

(transitive) To promote heavily; to advertise or build up.

They started hyping the new magazine months before its release.

He has played the games though. :D

And to behonest, the "Hype" meater is a measure of the ratio of "Fan:Troll" If you have more fans then trolls, the game is more likely to be good (which doesn't say much but still is an OK indication). As such, it does it's role.

There is probably a reason why they call it "hype" instead of "objectively factual and emperically demonstrable truth." It's just people giving their opinions, most of whom have never played the game they are hyping.

People are so biased towards their own MMO that they form their opinions on such diverse issues as grouping/soloing, P2P/F2P, sandbox/theme and death penalties purely on what is in their favourite MMO. If they have it in their MMO its great, if their MMO does not have its rubbish.

As you can imagine this does hold back our debates somewhat. :D

    QFT, Best answer.

Most media is biased to be honest... *shrug*. For an easy example, just compare major news networks stories based on the same subject.
