The ONE thing I will be sad to miss in WoW's future

just1opinionjust1opinion Member UncommonPosts: 4,641

Just today it crossed my mind that for the first time, when Cataclysm is released....I will miss a huge WoW world event. I was there for every single one before....

When the gates of Ahn Quiraj were opened....

And Naxxramus (back in the early days...not the WotLK version)....

When BC was released....

When WotLK was released....

And all those world events in between (no....I don't mean holiday events, I mean major changes in the game world events).

I can only imagine how EPIC the "end" of the pre-Cataclysm world....will be. And thinking about THAT today....is the very first time I have felt.....sad.....about missing something Blizzard would be doing in the future.

I could sub for the month before the release and after, I suppose....but everything within me resists the idea of giving Blizzard even ONE more dollar of my money. Being an ex-subscriber with a household that had three players and three unique accounts, we've given Blizzard a lot of money already.  And while I do feel we "got our money's worth" in time played.....I'm not too anxious to buy into it all again just to see "the event."

Speculation as to what this event might be like?

I kind of imagine people standing around in Orgrimmar and other places and the entire "world" seeing devastation being wrought all around them and then Blizzard making the servers go "dark" (along with the world in game) when they shut them down for the big release date.  I'm actually guessing they'll pull the entire game offline for a "day of darkness" in keeping with immersion.

What do you guys think will happen in game....for this catastrophic event?

Exactly.  And you have to wonder what kind of plans they have for making that SUPER epic, ya know?

I forsee monster lag, crazy disconects, and a return of server ques for people logging on to see the event

the missing link in a chain of destruction.

All spelling and typographical errors are based soely on the fact that i just dont care. If you must point out my lack of atention to detail, please do it with a smile.

I have thought about it and read many a speculative thread but I have no idea just a basic theory. I personally wouldnt mind checking it out myself but going back is just not going to happen for me at this point. Whatever bias you feel about the game I dont see why you can bypass it for the sake of just experiencing the event but I guess once a person starts doubting there is no end to it.

I was always drawn to the lore of WoW, which kept me playing longer then necessary, I think the event will mostly involve the Twilight Hammer Cult/Clan and its return to power under the command of Deathwing and some kind of raid on the major cities by the cultists. My money is that eventually a resurrected Cho'gall and his subordinate Vyral the Vile will be a raid encounter in the expac.

    That highlighted bit there....

Yeah. Well...I kind of felt like that too, but...just as another poster just said....

If a gob of people are logging in JUST for the event....hell that ALONE could cause the "castastrophic event!"  If everyone that had LEFT WoW logged back in JUST for the event....I think it would probably crash the servers and screw everything up for EVERYONE.  Nah....I probably won't be doing that.

But the rest of what you said....I can see that happening.  But...I also remember that the event prior to WotLK launch...REALLY pissed a lot of people off.  People were getting killed by zombies and turned INTO zombies, etc. And OMG....the bitching and moaning about it actually made Blizzard stop the event early.  People were really obnoxious about it, so....I have to wonder if they will be ABLE to pull off attacks by the Twilight Hammer in the same way without people getting all pissy about it, ya know?

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the AH at Orgrimmar if people are suddenly being ganked by hordes of cultists....

    OMG....I can hear the whining.

So how Blizzard will pull off another death and destruction end to things without pissing off the whiners....is hard to say, but fun to try to imagine!  lol

Ah...so because a lot of people might show up to the event and it could have problems? ...you know what.... I wont say anything more about that except...I dont let what others are doing affect me, if I want to be there I will be there regardless.

People will always complain no matter what...will blizzard look at that event and change this one because of it? who knows...but honestly if Blizz hasnt realized that people will always bitch and whine and make this event lame...yeah I see more people whining cause of how sad and uneventfull it was then the fact that cultists invaded the towns. just my 2 cents..

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the AH at Orgrimmar if people are suddenly being ganked by hordes of cultists....

OMG....I can hear the whining. I dont remember much whining when the zombie invasion hit, you may have but I dont remember that. I just remember people jumping on to their toons and running to the nearist town to get involved (the disease didnt inflict durability damage when you died as a zombie so I didnt really care for getting infected)...which I think would happen if twilight cultists started raiding the capitals..

Aside from the Gnomeregan and Echo Isles events & the doom cult appearing in Org & SW, I'd say the actual "Destruction" of the old world will only take place with a server patch, so basically, you will log in after a patch and zones will have changed because of Deathwing's return. I really doubt they will have like weather effects, the zones changing around you etc... happening in the world in real time around your character. But, then who knows at this point.

  • kujiikujii Member UncommonPosts: 190

I wouldn't sweat it.  All you will most likely miss is a crap load of lag that is so bad you can't move for 20 minutes, followed by all servers crashing as per their usual world event.

  • Thomas2006Thomas2006 Member RarePosts: 1,152

Well from what has been said there are going to be a series of events that lead upto the big conclusion. These are said to start several months before the expansion launch to give everyone enough time to take part in them.

They have already started making news posts that the Operation: Gnomeregan is imminent. It is one of the pre-cursor events that is going to lead up-to the big Cata event. I imagine to see it launch within the next month or two at the latest.

As far as the servers crashing and stuff at the end and launch of Cata. I doubt it will happen. We didn't see many issues with the launch of Wotlk because Blizzard learned a few key lessons from BC's launch.

I imagine there will be ALOT of player death and I wouldn't doubt it if you don't see Deathwing flying overhead killing people left and right. Lot's of fire death, people running around crazy like and Deathwing flying overhead at timed intervals around the major cities along with loads of NPC's attempting to attack the cities.

It's going to be epic regardless if the event is big or small. It's going to forever change the looks of Azeroth. The old world as we know it today will be gone and changed.

Cata is also a good setup for a rebuilding type event / expansion in the future.

same here!it would be nice to get a peek but honestly unless they have insanelly massive pve/pvp i dont see myself going back

if i want change there are better or =good game coming up soon.title like

    FORSAKEN WORLD

    GUILD WARS 2(BUY,F2P)

just these 2 alone will keep us entertain for a long while and both will be better game

i sure look forward to forsaken world i do hope pw change their model from international server to worldwide

this would means all player would have access to all gamer worldwide (this would be a major blow to wow)

we ll have to wait and see if they do same they did for pw was nice back then but now we re due for a game that is accessible everywhere on the planet without any kind of ipblock (like the one there is in asia!)

Oh god....you might not remember, but it was a HUGE controversy, actually. Blizzard stopped the event early because they were getting SO MANY pissed off forum posts and tons of phone calls about it.

It was no small thing. It was a massive controversy. People were mad because they couldn't go about their dailies or get on flights or go to the AH without someone infecting them. Yeah, trust me....you could probably still look it up on the WoW forums under Scourge Invasion, I bet and see it all.

In five years of playing....it was the worst Blizzard vs. Players (or ONLY one) that I remember because it WAS so massive.

    But....

I hope they don't let that stop them from doing something really epic and amazing. Alas....I'll just have to hear about it from the people who are playing then, but....that's okay. :)

ya they had that at a pre-lunch if i recall the scourge invading, dont know if it was cut short(dont think so)but everybody got infected by them lol

it was hilarious the first few time but after  a while gamer the way they are.ended upflaming for the exacting they had hoped for lol.this alone was funny by it self .blizzard make it happen and player complain about the exact stuff they asked

i bet next time player ask for something blizzard will ignore them !who could blame blizzard .this didnt happen one time it happened countless time the first one?

probably in vanilla wow when ewverybody was good game because there was actual contested zone(being contested)

its a contested zone for crying out loud!guess what?player complained they couldnt level because they were being ganked around ss,or south of stormwind

hell we had a big warning !you are entering ACONTESTED ZONE

gees dont go there dude its contested nope they went then complained then they got the contested zone not contested !

why would player bother go there anymore its a contested zone only in name no incentive to go in wesfall kill the dragon(even if your a horde)it give bullshit as reward

it would be very easy for blizzard to bring these back

rise all those world raid(pve/pvp)dragon to max lvl with proper reward and i bet you you never saw more epic pvpve fight since wow was made

but they wont because whatever blizzard do (unless they  called microsoft for a variant of donnybrook and all other nice goody that could help)

the4y cannot bypass one thing !lag 1it was an issue at lunch !its still an issue today!

now its hidden behind gw ways !ton of instance ton of portal to go there =zero lag

you have more chance of seeing gw 2 adopt what wow left behind since they plan to do open world!i bet they ll probably support stuff like this :"

    64 bit

    donnybrook

large adress aware for those using 32 bit(lol!who?by the time gw2 lunch the vast majority of p2p gamer will have gone w7 64 bit!

yep vista was bad !aint the case with w7 64 bit !and its simplicity is so bafflying,a lot wonder why they didnt have that instead of the bullcrap that vista was at lunch!

I've thought about it.. but it isn't worth it to resub just to see some new make up.. It's just a change of scenary and the content will be just as crappy as it was when I left.. I'll just wait for screenshots if I get interested.. LOL   Those are free.. I'm not buying into the Cataclysm hype a PR marketing stunt to sucker me out of money..

While I'm mildly interested in the changes, not enough to resub to the game since little has changed with regards to why I left.

Yup...I hear ya. That's pretty much what I was saying about having given them quite a sizable amount of money over the past five years being that our little family of three all had their own accounts, had to pay for each expansion x3, each authenticator, etc.

But admittedly....I always rather enjoyed the world launch events and was there for each one. I remember The Gates of Ahn'Quiraj and the "work" we did as a server together beforehand.....  Ahh, but I'm probably just waxing sentimental, because I know full well that the server does NOT cooperate any more to do anything, the community is not NOW what it was back then, and I'm probably just letting the sentimentality of it all move me.

I won't be giving Blizzard any more money, but....I suppose there's the possibility that someone may record parts of the event and put them on YouTube. I would imagine someone will....if for nothing else...for the sake of advertisement. Who knows?

Anyway....just a momentary flicker in the grieving process of having left ANY game that you once loved.  This certainly isn't the ONLY game where I've had those little moments of reminiscing. :)

For me WoW is now pure nostalgia. I had a  lot of fun but I won't be returning for anything, not even to see this event.

I do agree that the world events were some of my favourite times, I just wish there had been more of them... a LOT more of them. Having the world change and being a part of that change was a great feeling.

I am sure there will be a ton of youtube clips about it though. It might not feel the same but you can see what it will be like without the hassle and expense of actually being there.

Our thoughts as well..  The community has changed.. For us the game used to be "find ways to join together" to do world events and have a great time.. It was about open world events and action and dungeons and raids were, in our opinion side action..  Not now.. Now the community finds way to kick people from events.  It's become an elitist esport and it appears guilds and people find ways to KICK people from group or raids, instead of inviting them..  We all feel that we are back in high school again, and we left that decades ago..

We feel the same way, and actually went back to tinkering in EQ and enjoying ourselves again..

Not all guilds are so hot-headed. My guild along with others are generally down-to-earth. WoW unfortunately has been overrun in some ways with immature adults/children who think they’re the shit the first week they play the game or simply smartass vets with their ego up their ass. After 3:00pm (UTC-05:00 EST) brats spam trade chat half to death with off-the-wall crap to get attention. It’s ridiculous how high the dropout rates are for raids, battle grounds, and dungeons. In many ways it’s the people playing the game that have ruined it and not the game itself or its creators. The gameplay is still nice, but the graphics are becoming outdated… you don’t have to be a genius to figure that out. Honestly Cataclysm does seem nice; however it still can’t change the people playing it. Judging from what happened thus far it’s only going to get worse until some major changes are made to prevent asinine people from doing asinine things. lol

Sometimes the truth hurts more than believing the lie.

I see a huge earthquake happening...and then the screen goes black, followed by a "you have died" notice....with no option to release spirit. And then, once Cataclysm finally comes out, you are allowed to rez.

WoW isn't the ONLY game that I used to play that I occasionally wonder about what's happening in it now. I also wonder about LotRO and what's gone on in the expansions since I left, and UO, and assorted others.....

    Is that SO unusual?

I had friends in all of those guilds too....people I played with every day, just like those I play with NOW. If I left the game I'm playing NOW....I would miss some things about it too.
