Random Loot gen (diablo style) ?

Nekrosis1Nekrosis1 Member Posts: 25

I'm curious, are there any MMO's out right now that have a totally random loot generator?

I'm talking about a Diablo II, Asheron's Call-style system where loot is generated with random stats, and not like all the wow/EQ clones where every item has specific stats that are always the same....

One of the things I really like in older games was to be able to down a mob and have a chance at some really cool loot, no matter what mob it was...

Well most of ppl will yell at me but i'll suggest Warhammer because even on low levels you can get uber weapons from random drops or special missions and The biggest thing i miss about that game is scavenging and talisman making

you scavenge someones corpse and you find ingredients which is ranked as common-uncommon-rare-superrior and for talisman making you open a window that has places to put those things and you combine those to make awesome talismans that you can use to put stats on gear.

Iw as the talisman guy of my server^^ in level 5 i had  a gear that had 4 str and the talisman made it 38 lol and the pvp is fun too.this is the link for trial  EU:http://www.war-europe.com/  For US :http://www.warhammeronline.com/

    hope it helps ^^

I think DAoC already had random loot in the "Shrouded Isles"  regions back in 2003

City of Heroes has random loot.   The level of a mob limits what it can drop, but any level 50 mob (minion, lieutenant, boss) can drop any level 50 item.    Just another reason why it's my fav MMO.

LotRO's Legendary Items kinda work that way.  You get a few random stats to start with, and you can choose some others as the item progresses in experience.

They are balanced, though.  It's not like you'll find a LI that's uber powerful while others are weak.  Though some will compliment your build more than others.

This system is really great - it adds excitement to killing every mob, because every mob could drop a weapon or armor piece with unexpectedly great stats. I remember it was in some asian game called RYL.

Even if some mob drops one and same weapon every time, it should definitely have random stats each time. Random delay, random damage.

Devs should really really consider it. It would add much more fun to any game.

I totally agree.  But I have seen other argue that they don't like a 'lottery' system of loot, then want to work towards a specific (item) goal.    Now, if the game had a thriving auction house and no *cough* moronic *cough* bind on acquire system, everyone would win.

The only ones that i an think of are AC and was AC2. AC2 had it so that if you crafted something it could be different with better or worse stats each time. same with the drops. It gave a good reason to craft and kill every mob that you seen. To bad it's gone for good though........Crappy turbine!

So far you guys have named 'fixed loot' systems, not random in the sense that I'm talking about.

In AC1, everything about every item was random - the NAME of the item was random, as was its appearance, based on a number of different materials each part could be made out of (copper handle, steel blade etc), the damage was random but limited based on the level/difficulty of the mob that dropped it. Armor was the same ...each piece had randomly generated colors, but there were only x number of models. So there were different types of armor, but each piece had completely unique coloring and stats.

Most games now have it so that each specific item has a specific name and specific stats. Every time you find a "Copper Dagger", it will be completely identical to every other "Copper Dagger". Each item had random spells that it cast on the user, some of them had really rare ones (Majors) that made that item THAT much better. The chance for these drops actually being useful was slim, but when you got one, you were very excited.

Nowadays there's no thrill in looting something you just had a hard time killing unless it's a boss of some sort. AC did have bosses and quest mobs, as well as VERY rare mobs that would drop very cool items (Think Dark Sorceror - their casting orbs were THE most valuable item in the game for a long time), so those who like to hunt for a specific item could get what they wanted, too.

Warhammer doesn't have a random loot gen...it just has a table of specific items that randomly drop from different mobs.

The more I think about it, the more it seems AC1 was the perfect MMORPG that people are asking for today, but nobody wants to make another game just like it. Sad.

hellgate london had it, pity it went off forever :(

(and, yes, if we can consider STO and Global Agenda as MMOs, then HG:L WAS a mmo)

i hate fixed loot as well, that's why i enjoyed the "87 bazillion items" in Borderlands :P they should definitely make a mmo of it :P

I played AC1 for quite a few years in the early 2000's, and every now and then I'll jump back and and just run around. My parents still play the game on a regular basis, so I ask them how it's doing as well.

If they were to make a game similar in nature to AC1 (skills, stats, exp, world, combat, crafting, etc.) or just re-make AC1 with an all new engine and interface but keep the core concepts I would totally get it. I had a lot of fun in other games before AC1 and after AC1, but nothing has really captured that feel.

I had a good time in WoW for a few years too, regardless of it not being a random generated loot game, but now I can't even consider it for fun considering how dumbed down it's gotten and continues to get. =
