Hey guys, I have been reading up with the "For those looking for a group" thread and it seems to be all over the place. I am in the same boat as many of you. I have played most of the games to death and just want to have that classic feeling of being in a group for a reason and feel like we are actually challenged.
Many people are saying FFXI is a group based game, and I would like to give it a shot if there are other people willing to go for it. At $14.00 for the game and all expansions it won't put a hole in our pockets, and I am fairly sure that there are global servers.
I'll start by saying I live in the US and am in the EST zone. I work Mon-Friday 7am-5pm. Other than those times I can find time to play. If we can get enough people here willing to work together and try the game together this could be a fun thing. This is not a group that will form over night, and it will take some communication. If you want to get this rolling, please be patient as we get all the people who are interested into the same server and locate eachother in game.
Hope to hear from some people soon!

I just might be interested in what you're trying to do.
I would totally do it, but due to the new stupid accounting system of playonline, it now requires to have a 3D secure credit card. However, hardly any major credit card companies in the US offer 3D secure credit cards. I am so not getting a new fudgin credit card just to play a mmo... Capital One does not offer 3D Secure Visa or Mastercards, and the same goes for most other major banks and local small banks. I think Bank of America does have 3D Secure Mastercard, but I am so not putting my money or any other line of credit with BoA now that the Government owns a stake in it.
I am a veteran of FFXI played since release for 3 years then quit right as CoP came out. I have been looking for a game to fill the spot until FFXIV. I have tried various F2P and P2P, and the only ones that have kept my interest for more than 1 year were: UO, FFXI, WoW, and the original EQ before PoK. EQ -> to old and too many expansions. UO -> Age of Shadows nailed the last nail in the coffin for me. WoW -> been there done that epicced out BS will probably go back for a month or two with Cataclysm comes out but that is probably it <- Plus too easy now and not very rewarding like FFXI is.
Samezies, I want to get back into the game, but two things are holding me back from doing so, first off, I heard its like impossible to get into a group at low levels now, wasnt 3 years ago when I played, and like 8 hours of Playonline updates, that was 3 years ago, since there have been many updates and expansions, I heard it takes like around a whole day just to finish the update process, but if we can get like enough people here to want to do this, and actually follow through (I think many people say there interested in this group stuff start a new game when there not) then I'll go for it. I think we should get maybe at least 10 or more, and start a little leveling clan or linkshell or whatever and stuff.
EDIT: Didnt see post above when I posted, are you serious about that credit card crap? Dam, ill do more research on that but that sucks
MMOs played: Too many
Watch List: FFXIV, CoH:GR, GW2, SWTOR, TERA, Earthrise
8 hours of downloading updates? You running on 56k lol? most Ive ever waitied for updating was 1hr and a half waiting to install all content on a new comp in the recent last 3 weeks. Thats the most it's ever takin me in last 7yrs playing.
As for ppl claiming their a veteran... playin basic content plus zilart, def aint no veteran..... You'd be considered a noob by todays noobs lol.
Dead serious and I have been looking into it myself. They started doing it back around in October 09. Supposedly on the FFXI website under FAQs you can call in to give credit card information for non 3D secure. However, according to other players that did that, playonline is now canceling their accounts because the credit card is not 3D Secure. It is like, sure we'll let you play but only for a bit and then we will yank it out from under you. Also, other players are reporting that even though they call in now to do it, they are being turned down and are being redirected to various credit card companies that do have a 3D secure card.
As a developer myself, I know Squenix just shot themselves in the foot by doing the 3D secure card. Why? Because, not even one third of credit card companies offer 3D secure over here in the U.S. The only major card carriers in eruope that does 3D secure are ones that provide a Maestro card, and they have to be 3D secure in order to offer a Maestro card.
Two, Japan doesn't even do 3D secure either, but the Japanese version of FFXI allows for different payment methods that are over in Japan instead of just credit card. Plust, most Japanese gamers use the other method to pay anyway, so it doesn't affect them at all. Nonetheless, the only way to pay for FFXI in the U.S. is via a credit card.
Edit: Run on sentence fix XD.

Well that sure is...different. Never heard of a game company doing that- I guess they are hoping to gain more security by doing so, but still I think it is a stupid idea and really will decrease the amount of people willing to play. I know I do not have a "3D secure" card...im guessing it is like having the authenticator I use for my paypal account?
Anyhow- I would still be willing to do this if enough people were interested. I will just have to call them to set up a subscription. Lets try to keep this thread just for people are ARE interested in a possible group starting new in FFXI. Once we see if there are enough folks interested we can figure out the billing issues/rules together and see if everyone still wants to go through with it
All of you that are interested in FFXI and starting from scratch should click on my signature and come visit out Linkshell Forums where you can learn a great deal more about us, our guidelines and even join us if you so choose.
A short quip though; we are a family oriented community of mature gamers that love FFXI and we plan to switch to FFXIV asap on its launch, we're very newbie and returning veteran friendly, and love to party together for XP,quests, missions and helping each other with group required content and chatting on Vent.
Stop by; say hi and join us in Vana'diel!
I wish I could play, but I have the same stupid CC thing. Play on the Bahamut server, when I started I was told it was the most populated server. The low level areas have a ton of people. Also, change your controls. The default controls suck, a lot of people quit because of that not knowing you can change them.
I sent over a email to the support team and told them I am a new playing thinking about buying the game, but want to know how the billing is set up as I have heard of there being a required 3-D credit card, which I do not have and it is not available for me. So hopefully they will respond and I will be able to say what our options are.
So far I only have 1 person who is for sure interested in doing this, billing issues aside, is anyone else interested in the idea? If possible just send me a PM so I can add your name to a list im making!
Thanks.
If we are actually interested in doing this then let's give it a shot instead of sitting about talking about credit cards... I've had my account for a few years, haven't been playing, but kept it active, and had no troubles with the CC because I keep getting billed for it... Btw, a company that charges a fee to use their service... will not make it immpossible for you to pay for it...
I just got the email from their support:
Dear Customer,
Regarding your request for billing support. Please find your answer below.
Please note that we are no longer able to accept credit cards that do not support the Payer Authentication Service (3-D Secure). If you are a current PlayOnline member and your credit card company does not support this service, please contact the Information Center for further assistance. Be sure to have the payment method ready when you contact the Information Center.
I guess I have it on my card then without realizing it....
I emailed them back asking what I can do to subscribe if my bank doesn't have that, hopefully can get a response back soon...kinda hoping to get a group together in a game and have some fun.
Would be nice to get back into it! I've still got some RL friends that play quite a bit, as well as my wife. Surprisingly, she kept going long after I was done the first time. Trying to get back into it with them (because they were so far ahead) just didn't really work for me. Keep me updated and let me know when you're set.
It looks like there is a way around the 3D thing. Still though, we are the only two so far who want to get this group going. I'm hoping to get more players before I actually buy the game- I just found out there is no free trial =/
Well, if there is a way around the 3D Secure issue, then i am all for it. 14.99 for a copy that has everything plus 30 days free is gravy on top for me. I had a previous account but I think they finally cancelled it because I didn't keep an active credit card with the account. Plus, I just want to start over on a new server.
Edit: On another note, we may want to pick the most populated server to start back on.
I found this, and PMed people about it. They say it works.

I'm game for trying it out- looks like we have 3 people interested. Lets get some more!
looking forward to FFXIV meself were considering to try out this game for awhile.
So we have a couple of of who seem interested, do you guys want to give it until friday to see if we get any others who seem interested, and then take the leap and try to make new characters and meet in game?
I agree that we should choose the most populated server, and maybe even agree on a starter zone so we are all close together? Does anyone happen to know what the most populated server is?
OMG! You have no freakin' idea how grateful to you I'll be if this works.
Bahamut. Which starter zone you pick doesn't matter, you solo at your starting area level 1-10 then at 10 everyone(from all starter zones) goes to Valkrum Dunes, that's when the grouping starts.
I'm joining the Fenrir server tommorow, I have a friend on there to duo with. If anyone wants to join they're more than welcome.
Playing - EVE, Wurm
Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi
Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem
Now I am getting some folks saying the CC trick is a hit or miss kind of deal...kinda iffy on playing this game or not. Does anyone know of any other games that would be fun to try as a group? How is City of Heroes?
I just joined on on fenrir server. im only lvl 7 . use to play long time ago but wanted to start a new. Trial is about up so willing to try this thing with the 3-D card and see if mine works. I found fenrir to be pretty populated nicely. You guys should come over here with the rest of us. :P
P.S. Im in the Elritch ls mentioned on the first page. there is some lower lvls in there willing to group up as well ive seen. lets go!
