Right now I am downloading the trial. I am eager to try this game again, after reading alot of good stuff about it.
Now, it has been quite some years since I played this game, and in that time my preferances about what to play, has changed. I am quite picky about what to play, so I thought I would ask here for a some help & tips.
What I do like to play is some sort of Paladin; Warrior with some healing skills, and maybe able to tank as well. I also like stealthers. In any case, my class need to be strong solo, and at least 'average' in pvp. I know this might be alot to ask for, but could there be any class like this for me in DAoC?
In advance; thanks.

I played DAoC for years and the class which was eventually my main was a reaver on albion. The class has access to whip and shield, the whip has some of the strongest melee attacks in the game and the shield provides for a good solid defense. The class uses mainly life drains in battle which basically can win a 1on1 for you depending on the class, some fights will be easy, i used to find chain killing stealthers went well for me but against another class like a valkryie (uses heals and has heals procs, v hard to kill but i dont think as fun) you could be fighting for 20 min with no real winner. Its up to you at the end but the reaver was always my favourite tank type, it didnt use the best armour in albion (plate but uses chain instead but its still a great class.

Allright, will look into it. Thanks. Using a whip... that was original. Sounds fun
Any other suggestions?

Well the main 3 tank types are Armsman, Hero and Warrior, they each have minor differences:
Armsman: Can use S/S and Polearms and wears plate armour which has the highest damage absorbtion in the game, has a crossbow for pulling.
Warrior: Uses chain armour (best armour in midgard), doesnt have to specialize in 1h or 2h fighting as going down one weapon like grants the use of both which the other 2 main tanks do not its either one or the other or a hybrid spec. So uses 1h/shield then can switch to 2h to do more damage.
Hero: this is the class i know the least about but it uses scale armour (best in Hib), can use S/S but can spec spear aswell which is similar to polearm and large weapons which is just 2h weapons. Also has a nice ability called Moose (has another name but thats the slang) which is like a free like 40% heal, v handy when its up.

Midgard Skald is a great soloer. Not a true tank, more melee dps/support. They are the speed class for Mid, do good damage, have some CC. Everything is instant cast, very little downtime. The speed alone is worth it, as you can truck anywhere fast, fast, fast! Very good in groups and solo in PvP as well. Everyone needs a skald for the speed. Your mobility gives you advantages other classes won't have. They can be monsters in PvP.
DAoC Paladin can be powerful, but requires spell twisting. This is a carry over from EQ1 and can induce carpal tunnel syndrome should you choose to undertake the class. There's probably a macro for twisting, but you'd have to ask around for it. They don't kill fast, but they don't die easily either. Not sure if they're wanted for endgame PvP or not. In the old days, Alb had to drag one along for the endurance chant, not sure if that's still the case.
The Reaver gets lifetaps and is a tanky-dps class. They're not really built for full on tanking, but the can spec shield, so they have decent survivability.
Understand that this game is very late in its life cycle. There aren't any groups going on pre-endgame. You will be soloing most of the way to 50. Play a class with good soloability and it will be more enjoyable. The true tanks really need a support class to truly shine.
Well there's plenty of classes to play dependin on tastes, as mentioned above some like Skalds and others, personally I'm more the Berserker type.
but to fit your question, a melee type that can self heal in some way and decent in RvR (if you learn to play it well), Albion Reaver (already mentioned), Albion Paladin, Albion Friar (if you like staves), Midgard Valkerye (only female), Midgard Skald (kinda they get an out of combat healing song), Hibernia Warden, Hibernia Valewalker (big scythe), Hibernia Vampiir and Mauler (all 3 realms). Vampiir and Mauler are a little tougher to master as they have a different mechanic that forces you to fight to gain power.
If I had to start again and was only given a choice from those, I would be more inclined towards the Valewalker.
Thanks all. The Skald sounds nice, as the biggest downer for me in MMO's are casting time. I find that dreadful. I also love quick toons that travels fast, so it seems like a nice choice.
How much have my race choice to say when choosing class? I am particularly thinking end level.

Vinter is right, a troll is better for a Skald, 2h sword gives you a great style at 50 sword, but swords eat more endurance, axes eat medium and hammers eat the least.
Skalds don't have castable spells, they are all instant so you don't have to worry about that.
