Is this game really worth it?

DerekHarumiDerekHarumi Member UncommonPosts: 37

Only about 2 more months until summer break, and I'm already thinking of what to play during that time period. I already crossed on MapleStory and pretty much any other game I've played in my gaming career, and I came down to World of Warcraft. Now, I've played WoW ONCE before, and that was only for a couple of minutes. But, I'm thinking about saving up money to buy a game card as well as the two expansions IF I like the 10-day trial. I've heard this game is really addicting, just like MapleStory used to be for me, and I'm completely fine with that. I'm looking for a game to stick with, unlike most of the other games I play, where it's just a one-day promise.

Anyway, I'd like to know if this game is actually worth the bucks? $15 (Game Time) + $20 (Original Game) + $30 (1st expansion + $40 (2nd expansion) = $105! Although, you could probably subtract $70 since I'm going to hold off on buying the expansions for a while since I need to reach the limit of the original game.

So, I'd like to know if this came is worth my $100?

P.S. Luckily, I have 8 weeks left of school. I get paid $15 a week just for doing chores, so I'll be able to afford the game by the beginning of summer break. :)

Edit: I just figured out that you have to pay money for MOUNTS? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am burnt out on WOW atm.. But let me tell you... In MY opinion it is the best MMO on the market right now for a few simple reasons.

    1) EXTREMELY fluid combat + movement.

    2) Content...content... and more content

3)You never have to wait for groups..

    4) You can level fairly quickly to end game content with random dungeons..

    5) There is only 1 optional mount for sale. You don't have to get it, mounts bought with in-game currency are the exact same speed.

Thanks for the fast reply. :)

I honestly have no clue if I should sub to it or not. I'm definately going for the 10-day trial again, and if that works out, I'll sub and buy the game. Once I reach level 60 (I heard that's the cap for the original game), I'll buy the expansion and continue on, buy WoTK, and pretty much end my first character if all goes well. Maybe I'll start more characters if I like the game. xD

One think you might want to consider is that the Battlechest contains both the original game and the Burning Crusade expansion for slightly more than what the original game alone would cost you.

WoW certainly has a lot of content PvE wise and you most likely will enjoy it if you get absorbed in the vast amount of content it has to offer. It being worth it is merely a matter of personal opinion. It's very fun the first time through all the content if you can stand grinding. (The grind is nothing compared to Maplestory.)

I would definitely suggest playing the trial first, if you're a fan of the gameplay/storyline and graphics, then buy the actual game. But I suggest that you don't buy the expansions until you reach the required level of progression in gameplay, as to not waste money if you grow bored of the game before reaching it. Mounts are obtainable in game without paying additional money, the mounts in the cash shop are extra/unique compared to the ones normally obtainable in game by apprearance.

Also, as a past fan of Maplestory- you may very much prefer Wonderking, which is another 2d side scroller game, and free to play. I suggest giving this new game a try as well or at least looking into it before you dive into WoW, as well as perhaps making a post in the "looking for game" section on this forum and seeing if there are any other games out that have what you're looking for in a game. Who knows, you might get surprised with something more interesting and absorbing to you then WoW could ever be!

Good luck with whatever game(s) you choose, I hope your summer is an enjoyable one.

     ^This.

The Battle chest is maybe, what, $39.99 at most (about $10 cheaper than buying both the main game and BC expansion seperatly.

I would just get that for now seeing as you are kind of unsure if you really get into the game. Save the Wrath expansion for later if you get high enough or think you will stick with it.

There is nothing horrible about the game (just turn off Trade chat to avoid things like Anal joke Tuesdays...) and can be fun for a long while.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

I currently play WoW and yes it is very addicting.  I can tell you now I have had the game 4 years and have 1 maxed out character with all the endgame gear.  You will find that doing endgame after you max out your character will take much more time than the actual leveling does and it is much much more enjoyable to as this is where the majority of people are and also where you will get into most groups/guilds.  You will find focusing on one character maxed level is the way to go as leveling is considered boring and mind numbing by comparison to the endgame/raiding for gear.  Might I sugest a nice multi utility class such as druid, paladin, shaman, warrior or priest that you can do various things with such as heal tank or dps.  Multiple roles help endgame and throughout to get into instances.  This part is up to you though play several maybe up to lvl 10 and go with th class you enjoy the most to 80 and endgame raiding.

I would do what the above quote said and purchase the battlechest. It would save you money from buying WoW + BC + WOTLK. I seen the battlechest at Fred Meyer's the other day for $29.99, I think.

You could also get away with purchasing just the original game before investing anymore. Leveling 1-60 is enough time to experience content and get a feel for the game without having to invest more than you have to and end up regretting it. The only thing the expansions offer are content beyond 60, and of course, the two races introduced in BC.

There's plenty of PVE content and PVP content to be had in the original and all you miss out on is the 60+ content and 1 race per faction. If you like it, invest more. Or just buy the battlechest.

I always return to WOW when I want a fix. I usually don't stay subbed longer than 3-4 months, take a few month break, and rinse and repeat. The leveling experience in WOW is amazing. It's a little sugarcoated now since they nerfed instance difficulty and the mobs inside, and increased the leveling speed, but it's still one of the most solid and fluid leveling experiences in the genre.

When you'll get burnt out is the 80 content, the end-game. There just isn't enough to see and do to hold onto attention spans like there is leveling up. That is the downfall to every MMO, tho. WOW's just stings so bad because there's so much other content in the game pre-80.

But hey, if you decide to give it a go and subscribe, my wife and I just rerolled on Blackrock and have been enjoying the experience. Feel free to give us a shout on Saez (me) or Scyren (her). We're leveling with recruit-a-friend, so we get 300% XP on turnins, but we have a few level 1 alts we plan on leveling, as well. Wouldn't mind having another leveling buddy.

Buy cd-keys from an online store. For example, from Offgamers you can get original game + TBC + WotLK + 1 month for 75$. But yeah, no need to buy the expansions yet.

I think what you should ask yourself is:

Is any game really worth it?

You could spend those two months learning to play an instrument, etc. etc....

I am playing EVE and it's alright... level V skills are a bit much.

You all need to learn to spell.

I would, honestly, reply a big resoundnig "NO" to the OP's question.

I have played WoW give or take for two years with frequent de-sub / re-sub for a month spurts. I keep re-subbing because I hear about new features, and new areas and gear. I pay my 15$, log in, look around, join a PUG, and instantly get barraged with various expletives and insults because my gear is not epic, and because my main is a level 70.

That's right. I'm a level 70, and that's WITH WoTLK and many hours / months of /played time. How is this possible, you ask? How can someone have never reached level cap in a game that is "so easy to play"?

To quote word-for-word a conversation from a PUG i joined the other day:

"Me: Hey all! excuse me if i'm a bit rusty, I havent logged in in a few months, but I'll do my best"

"Player1: OMG can we kick this fag?"

"Player2: lol, your gear sucks man"

"Player 3: we're gonna die. Kick this fag"

That pretty much sums up the community in WoW nowadays. If you're not geared for the best, or 100% competitive / focused / on the ball / full to the brim with cocaine, everyone hates you. I did not paraphrase in that quote, nor did i try to make myself look better. That is exactly how it happened.

WoW has become clique-ish. Everyone is max level, and If you're a "noob" (meaning anyone who'se main is from level 1 to 79) then you should prepare for an incessant outpour of insults, mockery, and general motherfuckery. PVP servers are the worst in terms of player arrogance, PvE servers like Madoran (the one i'm on) are also pretty bad. The only servers that seem relatively safe from these "massive dicks of the internet" are RP servers.

WoW was a wonderful game. Then Blizzard started listening exclusively to those at max level (the "hardcore" players as some call them), and trashed everything below level 75. It's become a game of chest-thumping and who has the bigger two-handed mace.

That is one person's view of the game and maybe all these bad things really happened.

Personally, I have played the game since the beginning and for the most part the population is as civilized as in any other game.  You get a few jackasses but most people just want to play the game.

I must have joined a hundred PuGs throught the LFD systm in the last month and have had almost no bad experiences.  A few groups fell apart for the usual reasons and a few players were idiots but the majority played very professionally and used very polite language.  I played with a fresh-80 rogue whose gearscore is miniscule and got zero complaints.  Wehn a tank revealed that he never tanked an instance before people complimented him on his rather good performance (we did not wipe or have significant problems).

Frankly I really cannot think of ever experiencing any of the 'horror stories' one hears so often levied at WoW.

OTOH I have always considered my server to be a 'good server' so maybe every other server outside my battlegroup is a hellish cesspool.

    An interesting question....

Honestly, Yes- I think its worth it if you have not experienced WOW yet. Wow is the "fast food" of MMOs, the bane of gamers, the downfall of the MMO, etc, etc (really) and it is extremley dumbed down and easy. BUT, Wow can be fun too, the guild drama unsurpassed and the "journey" a blast.

In my time in Wow, my Wife and I would sit back listening to the craziness on Vent and laughed our asses off- There is no "soap opera" or "reality television show" that can compete on the same stupidity level as some of the Wow drama. The entertainment value of that is priceless.

There are people who "fall in love" in a few days, leave their RL mates, have "in game weddings" (which sometimes get "raided by the Horde"), break up and venomously hate each other all in the span of a couple weeks.... There are grown men (debatebly) who cry (literally) over not getting a drop.

The community (as a whole) is pretty immature, insane and ENTERTAINING as hell- Plus, I met some great people (few and far between) to sit back and laugh and the madness around us... I saw the most insane, crazy shit go on in that game.

Have fun- Its worth every penny for a while- Just dont worry too hard about the "game" as its lacking.

Wile WoW is a grait game it is not worth 100$ right now.

Now if you have a crappy computer this is the game taht will run and preform the best. in this case i'd say go for it, but only pay for the expansions once you reach the level cap.

if you have a good computer and can run games like AoC or Aion or Fallen Earth, Eve, even Warhammer i highly suggest trying those games out first and see if you like them. AoC, FE, Eve, War have free limited trials and they are good games, Aion doesn't have a free trial.

WoW is showing it's age more and more and wile it still runs very well on most machines and is still the most played mmo to date  it's far from the best out there. if you'v never played it you certanly would enjoy it but for me 100$ is too much for that game.

30$ for Battle chest (Original + BC) + 30$ (latest expansion) = 60$ and the 15 a month. So if you're going to do it, find a friend to do the triple experience Refer a Friend thing. And you do not pay money for mounts. Thats a special mount that you can get with money, but not at all necessary.

Where the heck are you shopping?

    $100?!

If you look around you can get the WoW Battlechest for $20 to $30. WotLK will be $40 at most places but Ive seen it for as low as $30.

So, you can get WoW for $50 to $70.

Can anyone tell me if the two guides that come with the Battle Chest are worth it? Do they explain a lot?

Edit: To get great gear tho you can do BG all day for few weeks and be set and with BG gear no one can't say shit.

I'm a retired player and while i won't go back to WoW i'd say that it's a pretty good choice for you. Judging from your post you are looking for a sandbox game, easy to learn and with plenty of choices. WoW offers this mantra. A big world, enough races and classes to choose from, easy  leveling (thousands of guides out there), dozens and dozens of addons to make your game time even more easier, huge community (this turned out to be a bad thing however) and after reaching the level cap you will get decked in shiny purples with very little effort (again a controversial aspect for many).

Just one piece of advice. Do a thoroughful check on the realms. Sadly WoW's community standards have sunk deep into the sewers since WotLK.  The game is filled with immature players and no, i am not referring to peoples ages. So try to gather some info about the server you're about to roll your main toon. There are still plenty of nice people playing WoW. Just don't look on the /generall and /trade channels for them (you'll notice immediately whyimage).

I would be very surprised to hear that you do not play on a PvP server. Do you? My experience with the WoW community is nothing at all like this (I play on a Normal server). I imagine PvP servers probably draw the more "hardcore", competitive players.

And to answer the OP's question: I would say yes, it is definitely worth it. The only reason I ever drop my sub is when I do not have time to play because of school/work. It is by-far the most fluid, well polished game on the market (though the character models themselves are starting to look dated. I am confident this will be addressed in the next year or so, though.)

Also, about the mounts...you absolutely do NOT pay for mounts with real money. Blizzard only recently added a mount to their pet store, where they sell vanity items. These "pets" are really just little animated characters that follow you around and do not fight. The items in the store are only cosmetic and have no effect on the game. There are over 100 mounts in the game, and the Celestial Steed is just getting a lot of attention because it's the first in the pet store.

I used to like WoW a lot but now I'm burned out so my answer is no, it is not worth the money spent just for entertainment for a couple of months. It's only going to be worth it if you like the trial. No one is going to be albe to tell you wheter or not you will like this game, the only thing they can tell you is wheter or not they liked it.

It's easy to learn, relatively fast to level, you will be grinding at times though, and it gets a litle more complicated later on. It can run on a toaster oven and is still pretty popular even though it is in a lame duck season while waiting for the next expansion.

As someone who played from Launch up until this time last year I can say to you that if you try it, you'll have a blast. However, the game has been changing direction radically of late and the final straw has recently come in the guise of purchasable mounts via a cash-shop. WoW started out fanastic, it was the perfect balance between hard and easy and featured great lore and an enthusiastic community. Unfortunately, I can't - in good spirits - say the same about it nowadays.

Agree but seriously man you don't have to buy the horse. Its just their for those who actually collect mounts.

Only worth it if you are new to the game or coming back from a long vacation and haven't played to 80.. But once you hit 80 and been there for a few months to do the little end game........ NO, it's not worth it..  90% of the player base in WoW are only there using the game as a pissing contest esport of my stuff is better then your stuff..  OR waiting for Cataclysm to come out in hopes it will energize the game again..  Zzzzzz   But that is my opinion as I have played for 5 years and been burned out long ago..

Personally, I really don't see the worth of paying $40 for 5  levels, handful of zones, and dungeons while paying $15 a month as well.. Talk about rip off..  I'm sure the fans of WoW will claim it's all worth it.. However, if Blizzard changed it name to BillyBobGames.. and came out with a "new" MMO with 5 levels, 6 zones, a handful of dungeons for $40,  the public would scream CON < RIP OFF> , and demand their money back etc etc..  But this is Blizzard, so they get a free pass for lazy work..

Hell.. STO has more content, then Cataclysm and look at the heat Cryptic is taking.. LOL
