Destructoid is reporting on a rumor provided by one of their "mysterious sources" that 2K Games is working on a new MMO project based on the BioShock IP. This wouldn't be the first time BioShock has been mentioned as a possible MMO before, but this is all simply rumors at this point.

While we may not know for sure whether or not a BioShock MMO is truly coming, this news could certainly serve to start some interesting discussion: Would you be interested in a BioShock MMO? Let us know in the comments below!

I think a Bioshock mmo would be really interesting.
I'm still a bit peeved with 2k for turning the new x-com game into a FPS. As far as Bioshock go's personaly I feel they droped the ball with Bioshock 2. However I feel it is a great setting to work with depending on how they aproach it. The original Bioshock made me get poopypants (to much info I know, but I digress). Would have preferd to see a Borderlands mmorpg but lets see how it gos.........But seriously an X-com fps????? sounds as sensible to me as cutting off your special parts to aide your sex life....yeah I know it's off topic but I can't get past it....going to take a chill pill and sit on the time out step
I feel that the story is well enough thought out to the point where it could make a viable MMO. But I don't see how it could be pulled off really.
It could be done where rapture was huge and that certain areas were run by some sort of npc "big boss" making it a faction game.
obviously adam is a resource that players need to get. Crafting could be done by discovering technology and refitting it for something else.
it could either be ffa pvp or have disputed areas.
It's actually fits rather well.

Yeah I guess that makes sense. I meant more of gameplay, what would you be able to play as, what style of MMO would it be, how would advancement work.
They could just stick with the whole plasmid thing and if they desired leveling then the more you advanced in a certain area the better and more effective those plasmids would become.

...in our series of "IPs that is better left alone as single player games"
Its like if they made a MMO from Mass Effect...Its a great game when you're *THE* shephard, but it will suck big time when you're one of the 5000+ shephards...thats why story driving doesnt work on MMOs.
Hmmm... I don't see how something like this could work, at least in a way that gives a diverse number of options. Seems like it would be missing alot of what makes Bioshock great. Gameplay and story would have to be heavily compromised to take an MMO form.
Rapture is a beautiful place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Imaging LotRO if Moria was the WHOLE GAME.
I don't see how it would work either. I mean, Rapture is a big place, but it doesn't seem like the kind of "world" I would expect in an 'M'mo. I fear it would become instanced crap like several other games in recent years, in order to maintain the 'closed in' and 'story' feel.
This. WTH is with developers these days, thinking that anything can become a successful.
Newsflash guys, Bioshock isn't that big in the first place to succed, it's just being a System Shock rip-off with a different setting.
How do you rip off your own game? Bioshock was developed by the guys that made System Shock.
They say its a spiritual successor lol.
I agree though not every IP works as a mmo.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Well, if I was to do it I would reimagine rapture and make it larger. I mean, the entire city is obviously not open to players in the single player game so there really is quite a lot of room.
I would set the game before the single player games. Probably after the mayhem hits.
I would then set it up as a faction game where players throw their lot in with one of several factions trying to take control over the city.
I would make it so plasmids could be used by players and that players could specialize or take more benefit from one type of plasmid or another. So sort of based off of skills.
Crafting would be based on scavenging technology.
That's a start. I'm sure there are other ways to go as well.

Ugh.
Ugh would pretty much sum it up for me too.
I loved the System Shock games and really liked Bioshock 1. Bioshock 2 had some gameplay improvements, but it really didn't fit in as a proper prequel and dragged the series down a bit. A Bioshock MMO would at best only be able to maintain the environment of the offline games while removing the actual gameplay that defined the Shock series incarnations.
Might be interesting .But not every successful single player game needs to be made into an MMO.
Seems like anything that is successful they want to milk as much out of it as they can and end up with something half assed like a bioshock MMO.
Some games are better off left in the state that made them popular in the 1st place.
Just my 2cp
I always thought the underwater city setting was a great idea, but wondered if they'd ever thought about showing us more of what Rapture was like at its best, before collapsing into anarchy. Doesn't seem like there's enough going on in Bioshock's post-rapture setting for much of an MMO (would we all play crazy splicers, or what?) but it would be pretty interesting to play the game in the city, before it all falls apart. Tons of possibilities there.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Hmm, they could maybe only use the idea of the plasmids or the environment of the city as just one of the locations. Placing the MMO to a time period while things slowly start to spiral out of control could be interesting (some people going insane, increase of murders and violence, uncaptured serial killers roaming around, and new plasmids arriving, while people start to cluster into separate groups with different goals).
But yes, Bioshock however interesting Rapture as a location is wouldn't be my most favorable MMO world as well. I wouldn't mind hanging around in a MMO world based upon the large universe of a Mass Effect, but I don't see that happen in the short run.

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
I don't know why, but the thought of a Bioshock-based MMORPG does absolutely nothing for me.
I simply can't see enough depth to amount to a game you play for a very long time.....but then again,. people endlessly play the same end-game crap in WoW for years, so maybe this is just what the market is waiting for...

I hate that a good game gets milked into a franchise. They did it with Halo, they're starting to do it with BioShock. Please no BioShock MMO. It will destroy the lore, ideas, and they'll have to create a bunch of new shit to make it work. I wouldn't even play it and I love MMO's and BioShock. The two just don't mix.
If done in the right manner, I could definitely see a Bioshock MMO working. It's got its own power system, a good backstory, a rich environment, and room for new creepy things. I don't mind seeing MMO concepts that aren't global in scope. You can have a good game that's limited, yet still involves numerous players interacting in a unique environment. I think Bioshock is a perfect test subject for a smaller mmo property.
I don't know about this, man... Bioshock 1 was good because Rapture felt so new and fresh. It was awesome to explore. Bioshock 2 lost that feeling for me. The Bioshock MMO would probably kill the series for me completely. Retreading the same areas again and again? Bleh. Also, Rapture isn't really all that big. Well, at least not big enough to be an MMO world.
I couldn't disagree more, I wouldn't mind being a "moisture farmer" in a Mass Effect MMO.
I think the Mass Effect universe is setup perfectly for a MMO, of course it wouldn't work to be in the same timeframe as the shepard saga. But setup during the period when humankind discovered the prothean technology and the first contact war might or even 100 years after the shepard saga.
a bioshock mmo would be awesome
I say yes as long as GFWL isn't INVOLVED!
Certain games should not be considered MMO material, look at Halo MMO it failed because many say who was doing it I say no, Halos universe just does not lend to anyone but the Master Chief, plan and simple. Bioshock, excellent game really excellent, I am not so sure a MMO with multiple classes and such can be derived from it? what would the classes be? Psycho Girl and Big Daddy? Not so sure this is a good idea, some genre's just don't lend themselves to MMO type games. They are fantastic single player immersive games but just don't have the depth or the breath of a MMO.
Just a thought.
