..to present day Entropia graphics (see latest member submitted screenshots). . LOL
Is this mmorpg.com actually active anymore?
No one updates headline pics in 4 years??
Comments
Since no one has noticed or cared for four years, I'd say the issue would be more the universal lack of interest in Entropia than MMORPG.com being an inactive site.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein
"Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
i think its more due to a total lack of interest in the game itself.... perhaps
It may be so. But what use is mmorpg.com if it decides to give false information of games which are not as popular as WoW?? Everyone knows how WoW or EVE or Conan looks like, I don't need mmorpg.com to tell me that.
Whats this site's purpose? Certainly not promoting only games that are already marketed with multimillions of $$$?
EU as mmorpg.com knows it:
present day:
Nope, I'd say it was more the lack of interest EU players have in looking at sites covering the games they went to EU to avoid. EU is a long-term, complicated and immersive world that can give you cash back now and then; most of us have neither the time or inclination to consider playing quick-fix games that reward you with fictional currency and worthless items.
I've joined MMORPG after seeing some of the disparaging comments about the game I play, but while EU keeps getting better, reading about games like WoW or Eve seems pointless to me.
"Can You describe the events leading up to your escape?"
"We ran out of beer"
Hey Hurrikane :-)
To put some positive perspective on this --- some players of EU do play other MMOs. Ive run into quite a few who are looking at games like TERA, Blade and Soul, and FFXIV and salivating. Myself I am curious about these 3, and have played other games such as Ultima Online, Asherons Call, and Darkfall for years (or not -- depending on how long theyve been out.) EU and other MMOs are as separate as World of Warcraft and Darkfall. I view it as a natural progression, with each step in the ladder offeriing something different, and valuable.
Step 1) World of Warcraft and its Clone Army -- These are great low stress, low worry games. People turn them into competitive arenas, but theyre not really cut out for it. Theyre just meant for fun. Theyre a good way to play your first RPG or MMORPG. Like Zelda.
Step 2)Ultima Online, Darkfall, EvE -- These are the sandbox games. They offer depth where the low stress theme park games in step 1 do not. Theyve got character flexibility, and inconsistency from person to person. Player vs Player really ends up being player vs player, as the persons choices in character build, time to devote, and gaming motor ability all factor into a fight. Its no longer about class and level. Players have the ability to exercise more of their own creativity.
Step 3)Entropia, Afterworld -- These games are mega sandboxes. They offer a world where planning is what its about. Every step you take you have to do it with a goal in mind. If you forget, you lose ground. Stick to the path and you will succeed. ITs all about thinking ahead, both socially and developmentally. The reason why --- because your mistakes actually cost you. Though the RMT can be viewed as a negative very easily, its also a positive in that your planning is rewarded when it succeeds.
Is step 3 better than step 1 or 2 because its step 3? No. Its a progression, not a heirarchy. Some players only want to play on Step 1. They may not have the time to get involved in deeper games. Some prefer only Step 3. They like the challenge. I personally cant stand step 1 games, but I find myself drawn to step 2 games just as much as step 3, but for different reasons. Challenge is great --- but there is something to be said for relaxation for its own sake. :-)

In other words you'd rather play a game as a job rather than play a game to have fun? I understand.
Awesome post :-) I really can't add anymore to it since its very similar to my thoughts on the matter. My relaxation when EU just gets to be to much is playing X3 Terran Conflict (hehe) or creating creatures in Photoshop or Zbrush. Been investigating EvE as well but not sold on it yet.
the point about RMT is a valid one, as imo, its something that most gamers tend to avoid dealing with, it has some very unsavoury connotations - whether deserved or not, its perhaps that particular business model, which is deterring people from playing the game. as for the old and new screenshots, unless they are of the exact same location, they prove nothing. and if they are of the exact same locations.... then obviously the game has changed more than a little inbetween the time they were taken. As for the business model, personally, i prefer subs, rather than cash shops etc, i prefer to pay to play, not pay to win...
Dont take the lack of screenshot updates personally. MMORPG.com isnt very good at keeping things up to date. Just look at the game list, there are a few games on it that arnt even runing any longer. Heck they still have Rubies of Eventide listed and its been dead for more then a year, no one has been able to sub to Neocron 2 for allmost 6 months and several of the games dont even have forums set up. A few of the articles are good but many of them are so riddled with errors in spelling and punctuation that it is painfully obviouse there isnt even anyone proofreading.
Theres a big misconception in this post about Entropia and how it handles RMT.
There is no cash shop in Entropia. You cannot buy an uber item and expect to use it, pwning enemies left and right. It does not work that way.
Instead every item in Entropia has real value. As you build wealth or deposit wealth into your character, you are able to purchase basic, and progressively more advanced items to do whatever task you are setting out to do.
In my mind Entropia is more like Ultima Online than say, Perfect World. Instead of Gold Pieces however, you have Dollars.

It is really pointless to try to take screenshots of "same" locations, as the whole geography has changed completely, none of the buildings from earlier version exist anymore, cities have been rebuilt and in many cases demolished, while new ones have appeared. Not even nature is similar anymore.
The game has really changed more than a little.. just check the member submitted screenshots, old and new.
Nice, personally i do think the 'after' screenshots are much better, though out of them all the second screen shot is definitely the best one, artistically imo.. what kind of hardware did you need to render these though? i have played the game before, but it was... over a year ago.. and then some i think.. if the game was a straight sub i'd probably give it another go, but the microtransaction model, just isnt for me..
(already removed them from previous post as I thought they could be seen in the mmorpg.com gallery anyway)
These particular shots were taken with Radeon 4850 512Mt, amd64x2 4200, 2Gt RAM in XP, so I could not take quite the highest quality. Also they are DirectX 9, not 10.
Presently with Radeon 5770, Phenom II 550BE, 4Gt, and Windows7 I can run EU with highest settings with some AA thrown in too, but it really taxes the system. At 1920x1080 Entropia really uses all the power this PC has.
These pics are a bit misleading as 1) They do not show much shadows, or volumetric lightning, shadows that objects leave in the slightly dusty air, night/day cycle, really dense foliage areas (jungles) etc. But then 2) there are also some areas which have not been finished with the best detail, so that in some remote spots textures may be really coarse and landscape rather bare.
