General: A Little MMOG Trivia Quiz

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com's Richard Aihoshi takes a bit of a different spin on his column this week, offering us six questions to test our MMO history knowledge.

Richard Aihoshi

For a fair part of last week, I had fun engaging in a little MMOG trivia duel. It wasn't anything formal, or even planned. Instead, it just happened. What started out with a question asking for an opinion somehow morphed into a contest to see how well each of us could stump the other with bits of information buried in the dusty corners of our brains.

By mutual agreement, we couldn't look up questions or answers. We didn't do this face to face, so it would have been pretty easy to cheat, but judging by the relatively low proportion we got correct, it seems pretty likely we played fair in this regard. I know I did. And to tell the truth, neither of us even kept score after a while. We just kept going because it was fun. Had we counted, I'd guess the result would have been close to a draw. Both of us have been involved with the category for quite a while, and thus have a lot of not necessarily useful knowledge stashed away.

In any case, that's what inspired this week's column. So, I hope you have some fun testing yourself to see how much you know. I left out any questions I figured almost nobody would get without looking up the answers. However, I've also omitted those I thought most experienced, knowledgeable MMO fans do know. So, my guess is that no one who reads this column with any regularity will lay a complete goose egg. However, I don't imagine many people will ace them all, at least not from memory.

Read A Little MMOG Trivia Quiz.

well i am proud to say, that even tho i am spending a lot of time reading about mmorpg, i didnt know answer to any of the questions :)

reason is, that i am interested in mmorpgs itself and their features, not so much in people who makes them, info about they revenue etc. :)

I'm with you Ben. I think I know a fair amount about the themes, mechanics and features of most games but I couldn't tell you who the development team was/is...

I agree with the 2 above me. Lets have some trivia about the games themselves, now that could be fun. Maybe.

I agree, to readily know the answers to these questions, one has to be interested in the MMO industry rather than the MMOs themselves...  So this looks to be a better trivia quiz for the industry professionals than it is for the gamers. :)

Oddly then, though I'm not of the industry, I've found I was right or close enough with most of the answers. Interestingly the only one I had absolutely no idea about was the one on Wizard101, the sole question that had to do with the game itself... Well, I guess I'm having more fun with the history of the industry than I'm having with its products! :)

Im with the rest of the guys here. I dont really care about what goes on backstage. All I care about are the games and playing them. So lets have a real mmorpg trivia about the games themselves, and not about side shows.

Lol, Mr Aihoshi can't get a break around here.

If he rails for F2P he gets ripped(I am one of the guilty here).

If he takes a break and submits a decent light reading article, he gets ripped.

For what it's worth Mr. Aihoshi, I found this article a refreshing change of pace from your usual "F2P is teh r0x0rz!!!11, if you don't agree you're in denial" posts.

I answered two of the questions correctly btw.

How about the answer to #6?

  • just1opinionjust1opinion Member UncommonPosts: 4,641

That was VERY interesting...at least to me.  Great write up.  I really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot.  I didn't know even ONE of the answers. :)

Q: What was the most effective way to kill an AFK macroer who was locked up in their house in Ultima Online?

    A:  Vas Corp Por

Bonus points for knowing what that actually means.

    Hooray for game trivia! :-)

Well, not being an insider I know none of these answers. I came close to the wizards 101 from reading an article about the game today at lunch. I had no idea who the guy was tho:(

I liked the article anyways as its sometimes fun to learn about things you had no idea about.

This.   I commend the writer's change of pace, but I wasn't too keen on the approach.

Same here. I didn't know the answer to any of those questions, and I only really cared about one of them. I think the title for the trivia should change and include the word "industry" in it. This isn't about the game at all really except one F2P question that still had personal info in it. If the title was changed, there might be more interest from the people who actually care abotu this stuff and probably less flack from the people coming here thinking this was about MMOGs.

I only knew the question about NCSoft and Lineage's profit in Korea, didn't get the 2nd part of that answer.

A fine article.  Aihoshi writing about F2P games can get tedious to read sometimes to be completely honest.  I just don't like that he tells me that I should be willing to give up my expected quality standards, and he says that kinda stuff often.  Too often.  If we don't expect quality Richard, then we will never get better games.

I can't speak for everyone else but I certainly wasn't putting Mr Aihoshi on blast for THIS article. Just making an observation about the theme.

Nice article, refreshing change of pace to the almost-rants we've been getting here recently.

    No worries.

I wasn't calling anyone out, rather speaking in generalities.

Reading Mr. Aishoshi's columns on a regular basis, he gets taken to task often for his F2P rants here.  I found it nice that he changed up this week, yet still had detractors.  It just goes to show that everyone likes different things and that is a good thing IMO.
