By classic I mean more like EQ1, EQ2, LOTRO, DDO, and less like WoW, Perfect World, Final Fantasy, etc. The payed ones seem to be better, but I'm open to some "free" model games.

Er... do you mean, gameplay wise, or story wise.
Because gameplay wise, LotRO and DDO fit into the WoW style, and partially EQ2 does as well.

Sub genre? You mean... what the genre used to be about? Quality immersive games made by people who love games and not corporations obsessed with draining people of their money?
I'd hardly call 500 thousand subscribers a sub genre when most "modern" MMOs can't even reach that number, much less sustain it.

Ah LOTR, WOW, and EQ2 are the same, basically gameplay (combat) wise (with their own take on some things)
But DDO is nothing like thoses, except maybe the quest system.... guess that is what you are talking about... cause the combat System between DDO and the rest is way different.
I was abit confuse about what (s)he was asking, my guess what that the (s)he was talking about lore wise.
No guns or machines (other then maybe clockwork stuff), Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Humans, all that stuff you find in high fantasy.

Unfortunately, if you want to be immersed into a great fantasy setting with great story, etc, you are looking at returning to pen and paper rpg's or console rpg's (ie. Elder Scrolls, etc.)
It's the sad state of the gaming industry currently.
However, if you can be patient, R.A. Salvatore is working a game world for 38 studios. It's a game called Copernicus. With R.A. Salvatore working on this I'm extremely excited. I'll bet the world in Copernicus will be very exciting and fleshed out.

crap online is coming out and im sure that pure crap online is coming out after that. if your not satisfied with those you can go buy total pile of shit online thats not long till its release.
As far as i have seen from artwork and screenshots, Craft of Gods will be a classic fantasy MMO. Check it out here on the site's game list.
Btw i thought we were supposed to be using the LF Game forum for this sort of threads? Just a tip

I'm honestly baffled by your question.
WoW is an EQ clone.
The only difference (apart from shocking memory leaks) between LOTRO and WoW that I noticed was less focus on pvp and less violent descriptions for attacks and "death".
So I'm not sure what makes a "classic" fantasy mmo for you.
But for decent looking fantasy mmos on the horizon, Tera Online has my attention. It's FPS and has an anime feel to it. That may not fit "classic" for you. But it looks decent so far.
Well, I didn't realize LoTRO was so similar to WoW. I only played for two days. WoW looks heavily influenced by asian culture, and silly. As for "classic" I mean Tolkien-esque as far as lore - if that helps.
I just heard of the Copernicus one coming out, it looks like it should be decent. That is, provided they don't screw something fundamental up about it.

Indeed, RA has written a 10,000 year history for the world, and it is confirmed to be classic high fantasy. But this game is still a bit aways. The only other classic high fantasy MMOs on the horizon would be possibly the rumored Elder Scrolls MMO, the WoT MMO, or Heroes of Telara. There are few others in the works, but they are not classic high fantasy, they incorporate machinary like guns, etc.
Sorry, WoW is the best game for this genre. Besides, wtf does EQ2 and LOTRO do that WoW doesn't?
ugh.
Look, wow is a fine game and I could go on as to why it is. But I don't want to play it.
It doesnt capture my imagination, I hate the art design and I'm just not inclined to be a wow player even though it has a lot of financial backing, huge involved community, fun things like yearly Blizzard Hootenannys, etc.
I play lotro because it has the world of middle earth, is a bit more "realisitc" (to use a word) than wow (or eq 2 for that matter) and really speaks to me.
Having said that, a while ago someone had made a post stating that no more fantasy games need be made because wow just does it better.
Well, good for him, glad he likes wow. But for me, I want a "different" type of fantasy game and for all of wow's great points, wow is NOT it. At least for me and dare I say others.

Guild Wars 2, maybe?
I'm not sure what you mean with your criteria. Is it the setting, the art style or the mechanics?

Uhhh I'm quite sure both sides of that fence that you put up have very similar games. Soo what exactly are you trying to get at here?
True, DDO is different

Aren't there enough generic fantasy MMOs at this point?
I would really like to see something truly new and fresh.

wha? WoW in no way looks influenced by asian culture...
as for looking silly that a matter of opinion.
Craft of Gods looks good. It reminds me a little bit of an MMO being developed by a Greek company.
Thanks. I'm going to give the Open Beta a try
