I played the trial for about 3 days now, still trying to get past the learning curve, but after getting used to how missions and gathering works i realized that this game is giving me the same immersed feeling that DAOC and UO did. But before I jump the gun and buy it for realz......If I buy the pc version off of steam, will I be able to download the mac version for free? I have a desktop with windows, but i also would like to play it on my macbook pro, Will i need to buy 2 versions of the game? Is there a simpler way of purchasing this game other than steam? I'm still a little iffy on getting it off of the (beta) version of steam on the mac. any sigguestions?
While i'm writing this thread, I might as well ask this as well......when you go for the character advancement, like industrial or fighting etc.....can u choose one of them for 1 ship....buy a new ship and choose another for that? like can I have a really good fighter ship and a really good gathering ship with being able to add skills to both advancements?
thank you in advance!

From what I understand, you can always download the client for free from the EVE Online website. If you buy it on Steam, that simply gets you a month of time in addition to the client.
So to answer your question, yes. If you buy it on steam, you can download the Mac client for free. If there is one. You might want to look into that.
Well you can.... as long as you are a patient person. Most of us aren't, which is why many players have two or more accounts, so we can focus one character on combat, another on mining, perhaps a 3rd on industry.
Me, I have 3 accounts that are all combat focused. Why? Because I want to be able to fly every ship in the game on one of my characters so that CCP can never nerf me. (never quite got over that Vagabond speed nerf)

I loved EVE for about 8 days, then it was somehow gone instantly, mostly because i learned that youll never catch up with players that have been playing for years...
EVE to me: one big galaxy, where you can do stuff you want, but since i like combat, EVE is a nono. i mean COMON! the combat in EVE is plain awfull, it may be eye candy at times, but the combat itself F*cking sux
Your Q isnt too clear what you mean but ...
Option 1
Each account can have 3 individual characters, only 1 of them can train a skill at any 1 time, and yes you can train each character in a different skillset.
Option 2
As skills only go up to Level 5, it's quite easy to max out a 'profession' skillset, given enough training time you can diversify into multiple skill groupings.
In your 1st year, you could easily finish Frigate/Cruiser combat related skills.
Skills in eve are situational, Industrial/Science or Trade skills dont really help when your piloting a battleship in a mission/pvp fleet.
No SP is wasted, as you can always use that invested time to make ISK, and ISK is just a means to an end.
[edit]
The "inability to catch up" the old-timers is a frequently observed myth
like most myths it is founded upon ignorance and stupidity
Eve's training is realtime, so yes someone who has been playing for 3+ years will have 40,000,000 SP or more
Most of eve's old-timers have huge amounts of SP in Industry, Science, Trade AND combat skills, but as already mentioned skills STOP at level 5 ... once those oldtimers reach level 5 the only way forward for them is sideways into different skillsets
Within 1 year a new player can have EVERY tradeskill at level 5, just the same as the 5 year old vet.
You will never have the same # of SP's, but professional skill-sets within eve are easily 'caughtup'
Initially, in the short term, players focus/specialise in 1 area of the game
In the long term, players diversify into multiple specialities
Noone has maxed skills in everything, with the skills currently ingame that would take 15-20 years ......
1) You did not stay around long enough to understand how the skill system works and why you don't need to catch up with veteran players from an overall SP perspective. I've been playing 3 years vs some folks 6 and trust me, I don't feel in anyway slighted or that they have some sort of advantage over me.
2) You really didn't play long enough to do PVP properly, nor understand the incredible fleet mechanics the game provides.
In conclusion, EVE isn't for you, and we'll be the better for it.

In conclusion, EVE is a snooze fest.
This is untrue, simply because there are a finite number of skillpoints that can apply to any one ship, and you can only fly one ship at once.
Skillpoints are not like levels. You cant say that 1 million SP = level 1 and 60 million SP = level 60, so the 60M SP guy will always beat the 1M SP guy. The 60M SP guy will genreally have more and better options, but he will not win any fights simply by virtue of having more skillpoints.

i dunno, i'm sure if they put the old tutorial back in.... it'd go back to 60% of players never make it past that in the trial
i know all games are just 1's and 0's... but with eve it's an accountants wet dream game wise with added pvp.. well i say pvp... it's definately not fast and furious or console like in action...... people really have to play it to really get the omg people play this.. vibe of it.
youtube always helps as do other sites, EvE looks a lot better than it did at launch.... but it's still a spreadsheet and sage line 50 with graphics more so than any MMO to date. I mean even single player games with that much yawning tend to be a small very niche market.... plus side, EvE once cured my insomnia.. always thank it for that.

Ahh, I'm jealous.. sometimes I miss that feeling when I started Eve, it really was like exploring a new universe
Yes, you can download the mac client and log in with that, even if you buy it off steam.
Steam is a pretty good way to buy it, I've got a lot of steam contacts and I like it that I can log into Eve and it tells my friends but if you dont want to buy it that way there are many other options. Might even be worth hunting around for an 'apochrypha' box set.. you'll get 60 days with it, maybe someone has one in stock tucked away somewhere.
As for ships... yes! You can have as many ships as you want all pre-configured for any kind of thing you could possibly want them for.
However..
What others are refering to is the training of all the different skills required! Its wise to specialise as early as possible, by all means train the basic skills required to fly the ships.. and then train some of the basics needed to operate certain modules! you'll figure out what these are just by exploring things and dabbling.
At some point you'll be faced with some decisions about training skills which take 4/5 days each.. at this point you should step back, think about what you want to do and then commit! - and stay commited for as long as possible, try not to be distracted but all the shinys
Use Evemon too, an exceptional tool that nearly all season pilots rely upon heavily.
Good luck o7
Which one?
I personally preferred the "Here's ship. There's red cross. And here's six hours of reading. Have fun.", but some of the other iterations of the tutorial were fun too. Like the "you're a ship. Goodbye." or the one that could start you without a skill to fly a ship..
Btw. op. You only have your account. It's the only thing that matters. Whether you're subscribed or not affects whether you can log in or not and nothing else. You can do it from a mac, a windows box or via wine on a linux box. You can download the client whenver you want even if you have no account. And before you ask, all expansions are mandatory and free.
