Which MMO should I play this summer before FFXIV?
I want to pick up something in anticipation of FFXIV to keep me busy now that school is out. What I'm looking for: 1) Big on PvE, 2) Huge world (I love just walking around and taking screen shots), 3) Ability to find a party. Also, I really don't want to play a licensed game like LotR:O or Conan. I just can't get into those. Oh yeah, I don't really mind the grind too much. I had no problems with Aion of FFXI. I will also probably be playing anywhere from 1 to 4 hours per day.
In the past I've played:
1. EQ (too archaic now after playing newer games)
2. EQ2 (was playing this with my roommates, but we got way too busy with school)
3. Aion (really like this, but the world was way too tiny, and the constant ganking by the other faction got old fast)
4. FFXI (could never find a party, but I wasn't in a linkshell or anything)
So any suggestions?

Play FFXI on the Bahamut server(it has a big population) or the free version of Anarchy Online.
Are there any LSes on Bahamut looking for new players? I'd really like to know I'd have some people to play with before buying a new sub.
There always is.. It'd probably be better if you asked on FFXI forums. Anyway, you don't need to join an LS just to find groups, there's always people doing PUGs. When I played half a year ago there was always 10-15+ people LFG for a zone and parties already leveling(well, in Valkrum Dunes and Qufim Island, less in the mid level zones, but still always people there).
If you're interested in FFXI, but don't want to start unless you're in a nice LS community that will guarantee you'll be able to get PTs and help from time to time, then click on my signature and visit our LS forums.
We are new and veteran player friendly, always running low lvl PTs for anything, and helping with PT required events, quests & missions. We are based on Fenrir, and our pop. tends to fluctuate between 1200-1500 peak times. Read our Visitors Instruction on how to join us and we'll go from there!
1200-1500?! That is huge! What is the average pop?
They recently combined servers on FFXI so the population has gotten better on some servers. I am like you in a sense where I have about 10-15 hours a week to play games. After losing interest with quite a few games, the only active sub I have right now is FFXI and I don't really play it much more either. I am too excited to play 14!
I kinda took a break from MMOs. Feels good to do so. Been playing some COD2 for the pvp craving and some NHL10. Logging in to FFXI occasionally to say hi and play a few hours. Tried recently STO, and Fallen Earth. Fallen Earth has some great upside. May keep you entertained for the summer. Some of the movements and combat is a bit clunky but still gave me some good hours of enjoyment.
I would recommend a break from MMOS personally. I think it will help you enjoy 14 that much more. FFXI was the 1st MMO game I ever played and was amazed at how vast everything was.
On weekends I've seen 3000+ on Bahamut, but yeah it's usually around 1500.
900-1200 average, which are plenty to group with, but we tend to do most our groups as an LS, and grab a few outsiders when necessary. Then early mornings when JP start logging in it hits around 3200-4300.
