I posted this on the Mortal Online official forums in the General Mortal Online Discussions section and thought I would post it here so that it could get flamed to death...
It's been a long time since I've played an MMO that is fun. MO has a lot (seriously, a lot) of issues/bugs and it looks really far from done from my point of view, but from what I can tell of what is available, this game has a lot of potential. It has a lot of heart and it's clear Starvault has put a lot of effort into making this game work.
There's even a lot of features that I disagree with (thieving is a pointless griefing mechanic, and this is coming from a UO vet), but there is no denying that this game is set up for a lot of fun. I've been running around Nave(?) with a bunch of friends, many of them also UO vets, and it just feels like it did the first time I played an MMO. Getting lost in a game that actually feels like a world, finding interesting landmarks, developing a character slowly into what I want as a character, etc...If it weren't for all the bugs, lack of content (I'm finding it terribly hard to find a dungeon or something) and lack of polish I would be in heaven right now. Those things keep me down, and a bit skeptical, especially hearing that you guys have planned to release the game this month when it is clearly not ready to go live. I can see where the game is going, and where it partially lyes at this point and that sort of cancels out all the bad.
So, since there's a lot of negative posts I just wanted to say excellent work and thank you. Hopefully you guys can pull it off.
Speaking to the other players: What do you guys say? Isn't the heart there? Isn't it clear that they've worked hard on this and that it could be something great with time?
If you're interesting in replying to the original thread, you can find it on the MO forums.
That is a very fair and reasonable impression of the game. People have different levels of what they can deal with as far as features / bugs etc. if they like other aspects of the game enough.
I have one hope for the games future. . . that is that they can release with enough subsribers to hire more staff to get to the "to do" list faster and work out the current issues. Sometimes they introduce something new and it causes more problems. For example. . when they thought desych was caused primarily by the database sytem they wiped and started characters with only a few skills. They added books to learn skills hoping that the rapid number of changes to skills would not be as hard on the system. When they did this some players could not see some of the basic skill books. This took a fair amount of time to resolve. and the desych was still there. Things like that don't go over so well after release and I am not sure they will have the population or resources to run a test server etc.
I love the game and find it very immersive. I would love to play it when they release it if they can fix just a few things. I just hope all the planned features do not come with issues - that could get very frustrating and cause players to give up or wait it out.
I love what the team wants to do and I hope they are successful so yes. .thank you SV for trying to make the game that you want to play. . it is the game I want to play as well. Best of luck.
The "premium price blah blah blah" arguement is the old one.
I paid the SAME price for an album from an indie artist from their own label as I did for an album by a major recording artist on a major record label.
I just can't believe the audacity of these companies to charge for "pre-orders", but is it their fault or our own for continuing to pay to play betas? Every company is doing it now-a-days, it is quiet sad.
But at least SV is letting people play the beta for free and see for themselves how everything is going rather than hiding behind a NDA and launching a broken game then charging monthly fees for it.
When an Indie music artist has poor production quality it is just considered lofi and part of their style though :P
Couldn't help the joke, but otherwise, you make a good point. I never really looked at it that way.

I love the game, it takes me back to when MMORPGs weren't just glorified single player theme parks with a chat box. The FPV put me off trying it however it's very immersive and fun and right now the game is in beta and F2P so I think everyone should give it a shot...
Aye, I feel the same way. This game really has that feeling of a living, breathing world and I'm actually having fun really exploring. Exploration is something that has been missing in MMO's for such a long time. You can't explore in a game that sends you everywhere through quests and has areas segregated by drastically different level monsters. In MO though, you can totally explore and it pays off much more than the vast majority of MMO's out there. It hasn't quite reached it's potential even in this area, but it's still better than what we've had recently in the worlds of MMO's.
Indeed... the joy of exploring for the sake of exploration... to go check out something you can sorta make out on the horizon... or just picking a direction and seeing where it takes you... and then finding something really cool you wouldn't have known about otherwise...
That sens of exploration has been *so* downplayed in MMOs these days. Now people can only be bothered if there's "discovery xp" involved. Worst thing ever to happen to the genre was this notion that everything in the game has to have an xp award attached to it, or it's not worth doing... truly a side-effect of more MMOs becoming mere "games", and not "worlds".
The little bit I saw of MO, I couldn't really get into it... but will likely check it out again at a later date. But I can appreciate at least what SV is trying to do.

So that's what I'm doing wrong! I've been telling my business manager we need to ensure we put out a quality CD, when all I really needed was a change in marketing tactic. DOH!
