My point was not simply based in the sub numbers, but more in that SciFi games have done very very poorly in the MMO market over the past several years despite what the reasoning is behind their problems. Making MMOs is a business, and when a company looks at what is popular and what is not, you can see that SciFi games have had a hard time, while fantasy games have flourished. This has seemingly lead to a saturation of fantasy games pouring into the market faster than anyone can actually keep up with. Had the original series of non fantasy based games done much better, then I can bet the number of fantasy games would not be as high as it stands right now.
It will be interesting to see in a few years, if SWTOR is a hit, if this number changes at all, and what it possibly will do for the genre.
well i think the answer is obvious. people pirate games that are eigther strictly solo or have a large-ish solo play. becuase honestly ... who wants to pay 60+$ on a game that may last a month and has no multiplayer. not to say i pirate but not many will pay for a soloplay game only. and cod that's just a great game all around so ofcourse it will be pirated
And despite 94% fantasy, which is mostly of a medieval theme, we don't have one realistic medieval MMO. It is a disgrace. What is even worse is that somehow we can't get a sandbox that doesn't turn into a PK-type game. A MMO where realistic societal interaction and immersion is prized over quick-fire ganking.

Anytime Mike, I knew mmorpg would find it interesting. It also makes me wonder on why there isn't more sci-fi mmorpg's. It is just as popular fiction-wise as fantasy is.
It's much easier to suspend disbelief in fantasy than any other genre - there's always the easy fallback of "it's magic" or "and a miracle occurs".
I find that the more immersed I get in a scifi world, the less tolerant of magic (technobabble) I become.
the only reason for that is because thats about all there is, not NEARLY enough of the others to attract people to them, plus moms and football players play WoW too so your geting a nontraditional group counted into the Fantasy column.
First thing I did was check the sources as well because its damn near impossible to find out how many subscribers and MMO has. SInce 2008 weve had a nice bump in the scifi genre too. While fantasy will still dominate, its more interesting to see how much share its losing.
And yet the top 4 rated future mmos are all non-fantasy, sci-fi or modern day horror.. Go figure?
Note to devs (which won't be reading this no doubt): Fantasy in mmo's is way over saturated. Think of the vast market opportunities for sci-fi or modern day mmos, instead of trying to grab your small share of the fantasy pie.

Not really at all surprising.

Publishers just want money now!now!now!now!
All they see is Blizzard raking in vast sums of $$ per month from WoW, and they want thier slice of the pie too ..
cue the release of lacklustre shoddy fantasy games en masse ...
CCP are more than welcome to my £15 a month as Eve is neither lackluster, shoddy or fantasy.
And 6% are eve.
