General: New World of Darkness Artwork Confirms Modern Setting

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

One of our readers tipped us off to what may perhaps be new World of Darkness concept art on the official CCP Games website. The artwork appears on the main site's slider as it scrolls through images for CCP's various projects. The new artwork appears to confirm that World of Darkness will indeed take place in a modern setting, if the recently released CCP Cloth simulation video wasn't evidence enough.

At least now we know for sure it's a modern setting. :D

I don't think the White Wolf games that were set in the middle ages were nearly as popular as the modern-day games.  I know I preferred modern...

This is probably one of the games I'm anticipating the most.  That CCP is making it is all the more enticing!

The perhaps meaning perhaps new. :) I wasn't sure if the image was new or not. I've certainly not seen it before.

Yeah, but nWoD (Vampire the Requiem, at least) has an additional and well defined historical setting that can be used as well. Rome, to be precise. Just saying, you never know what CCP could've pulled on us, given that there's a total media blackout for WoD MMO. Modern it is then. :D

OT: I was under the impression that Dark Ages period was quite popular. Not quite as the regular oWoD, but still popular enough to warrant plenty of books to be released for it.

Not to say the dark ages games were UNpopular, I played them and even GM'ed a couple... but the modern setting of the Vampire and Werewolf games would garner more interest in an MMO.

That is 1 thing about what CCP is doing that bugs me... I prefer being teased with little snippits of info... a screenshot here and there... at least tell me if we're gonna have more than just Vampires and Werewolves as playable characters.  3-faction PvP between Vampires, Werewolves, and maybe the Mages?  Ohhh man that would be epic!

I don't know how CCP is going to pull this game off.

Do you stay true to the IP and make a wide open game for roleplayers or do you make an action gothic rpg and have a good deal of subs lol

Stay with a strong community based game and this game will be considered boring because its up to the players to create "Fun".

Make it like everything else and people will burn them at the stake like they did with STO.

I would not want to be CCP Atlanta right now guys.

...and just think about the combat. I mean, you'll have to target someone and then run in circles around them...gonna be a tough game to pull off indeed! :P

Still, being CCP, I would expect that it will be somewhere in the middle. I mean, you have EvE for the "create the fun" game and Dust for the seemingly "instant action" game. So, maybe WoD will be the hybrid...At any rate, I'm just curious if they can make lightening strike twice and come up with another game that I find compelling.

alot who start play EvE find that game boring....CCP been willing to take the chance with the slow evolving game type before.  but could be they ve become more worried about their money at this point in the company lifetime :P

will see, sure is an intresting title and have alot to do with it being made by CCP - not that I d expect anything like EvE.

I'm really not  a fan of VTR. Huuuuuuuge fan of VTM. Unfortunately, I'm sure WoD will be based in VTR, but hey, I'm still stoked! Especially given the modern day setting.

To be honest, I don't really see this being a mainstream MMO (unless you also count EVE Online as a mainstream success), especially if CCP choses to adhere to the original IP (which they undoubtably will, given that they've merged with White Wolf)  in some fashion. Only problem is, I also really have absolutely NO idea have they even plan to make this game work... I mean, seriously.  So yeah, I'm just babbling without anything solid to back it up with.

    MikeB:

I'm really looking forward to it as well, but setting alone won't be enough to sell me on this one because actual gameplay elements are what's going to be interesting here. WoD IP simply isn't something you can transform into a typical hack and slash MMO and hope to preserve it's essence, at least not in my opinion. Maybe this E3 we'll actually see something unveiled (they teased us with that clothing physics thing, but that's just small stuff). :D

Although, maybe CCP is playing it smart by keeping things under wraps for now until they get closer to a release date or something major to show, unlike most companies these days which basically announce a game and than say that we have to wait like a year before it's released (GoW3, I'm looking at you).

This game is my numero uno, ultra uber mega crush. If this graphic has been broken elsewhere as a story then don't jump on Mike. I take the blame. I'm just happy that it's out there!! image

Edit: Oh, and I'm a huge fan of V:TM and I have grown to love V:TR. Strangely enough I don't care if this game is a sandbox or a themepark. I can't explain it because that distinction does matter to me when it comes to high or low fantasy themed games. I'm really hoping it is skill based and the point that CCP likes skill based is a plus. I just love the way EvE looks and if CCP brings that kind of "look" to World of Darkness cloud 9 here I come.

Screw mages, Hunters should be the third faction.

3 factions?  Camarilla Vampires, Sabbat Vampires and Werewolves!!! That would lead to some bloody conflict, lol! Then other factions can be added on top if needed (mages, hunters, risen, fae etc.)

    Very much looking to this.

300,000+ subscribers is pretty mainstream for a pay and play MMO.

This could be a killer game with the popularity of the Twilight series.  Hope CCP takes their time with it.

Not a mainstream MMO?  You have got to be kidding me.  Where have you been lately?  Someone has been down in the basement too long.
