tried ruins of magic and allods online just to find out they are item shop money traps..meaning that if you wanna be decent at all in the end you have to spend wads of cash..how is D&D in respect to this.

Well, first of all, the store points that you use to buy stuff can be bought with real money or earned for free in-game by completing quests. This means that you can eventually buy everything available in the store just by playing for free, though it WILL take a long time if you go that route and you'd need to repeat a lot of the free stuff quite often. There are already players who've bought all the best content through free-play after about 6 months.
However, spending even the smallest amount of real money on store points once will make your free account into a Premium account which will give you extra perks (more character slots, removes certain auction/gold carrying limits, etc) so a one-time purchase of points is advised.
Now, to answer the rest of your question, there is nothing in the DDO store that makes anyone overpowered. Just about everything in the store is also available in-game. Even the weapons and armor you can buy from the store are merely basic non-stat, non-buffed vendor trash type gear that might give you a slight head-start as a new character but is quickly out-leveled and not even very useful. Any other character-enhancing buffs you can get from the store (stat boosters, etc) are only marginally better, certainly not overpoweringly better, and like I said there are ways in-game to obtain the same things.
I can second the above. Lots of the stuff in the store is either cosmetic or the last in game items you can buy if you missed playing ie: Bunny hats from the Easter Special, cake from the Winter festival etc...
About the only thing I'd even think of buying would be some of the adventure packs, just so I didn't have to farm the same dungeons over and over. Having said that I'm on my 3rd / 4th time trhough some of the dungeons having done the solo, normal, hard (on a few) and now elite route (trying elite level just to see how the gaining favor = store points works). Nice thing is kicking the dungeon levels up does make them more challenging. I went back to the starter island and just got off line after my lvl 5 barb let the guy I was to protect die twice.
Some of the stuff in the store when I started F2p was actually needed, but Turbine looked at it again and did away with those items. Not often you see a company kill money making stuff in favor of the players.
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
Thought it might be a good idea to point out that d&do is not a pvp orientated game. And as said the items that are available are mostly low lvl equipment
What I paid for so far is a +3 sword that lasted until lvl 5 and an extra collectables bag to free up some space in my inventory. Have also bougt 2 adv packs so far. I spent $12 i think it was and still haven't gotten through half of it
I played this game not too long after it was F2P.
I really have to say that I enjoyed the game alot, it was very fun. BUT the thing the I hate about DDO and Turbine is, I played for 2 months earned almost all of the Expansions and Extras with there favor system. So yes I played for free and got half there content for free. So after 2 months of favor earning I broke down I spent $20 on random expansions and stuff.
1 Week after I payed them the $20 they Banned my account and wouldnt return my money. When I finally got a hold of Turbine they told me that I didnt pay for all of the content. I told them I earned most of the content on there favor system, I also showed them the the email stating what I payed for and spent my favor points on.
They still took the $20 dollars, and banned my account for life. So after playing for free and loving the game, I finally throw some money down and they return the favor with a "Thanks for giving us money now you cant play anymore!".
The best MMO I played after WOW( Everyone gets tired of it sooner or later) and they gave me the finger. I will never play or support Turbine again.
Former DDO Character's: Aquemini - Roscow Black
They got rid of the leveling tokens because many people who quit stated the need for those as a reason. It was one of those things where getting rid of it had the potential to make more money then keeping it did. They also dropped in quests so you did not have to buy them either.
At some point you are going to have to spend money or reroll a ton of chars to buy the items from the DDO store. In the course of normal gameplay for one or even 4 chars you will not earn enough favor to earn enough TP to but all the packs and other things you get with a VIP account. It can be done if you want to run the same few quests hundreds of times on multiple chars to earn the easy favor and TP that comes with it.
What did they ban you for?
after playing for a week now i can say im enjoying it.the current model was the way to go.it really isnt a 15 dollar mmo but neither are many of the big named mmos out there now...yea looking at you cryptic .maybe they should take a page here?not seeing how you guys got so much favor in so short a time..i have only earned 200 on my main so far.seems like its gonna end up being very grindy as i get further in but if i feel theres a future i will end up getting a few adventure packs to bridge to 20.some of the prices in the shop are jaw dropping though..i mean roughly 20 bucks for a 20 slot shared storage????about the same for a 32 point build but that can be unlocked with a shit ton of favor though.i have a few friends who are trying it out to,might stick around for a bit..its not like there are any good mmos coming out in the next 2 or so years anyway, and yes that includes the old republic,
ddo is by far the best mmo ive ever played i love monk and rogue classes
I'm very curious how you were able to do this and the time it took.
I know it's easy to get 100 points and you can grind out those points on six servers (600 pts) by getting 100 favor on each character. There's a bonus for new characters that is not applied to the second one which means after you're first character on a server hits 100 favor and gains 100 pts it will take more effort to get the next 100 pts on the same server with an additional character. I could be mistaken, but isn't it 25pts for every 100 favor?
A quick search shows an older possibiltiiy of being able to get ~900 favor from FREE content which equals 300 pts on your first character and only 225 pts on your second on the same server. If you did 1 character to 900 favor on six servers it would get you 1800pts, for free!
See the wiki on the ddo store which lists prices of the content: http://ddowiki.com/page/DDO_Store
According to the DDO_Store wiki it would cost 11,850 pts if you purchased all 23 of the adventure packs. Picking just 7 of the least expensive packs, with minor preference for content, it costs 2850pts. It would require grinding a new character through ALL the free content (1800pts) in addition to also grinding out a second character through all the same content (1350) across 6 servers (=3150pts, free! ) to be able to purchase those 7 ideal packs, with a few points to spare. I believe it's obvious that you, or anyone, would be purchasing the content as it became possible those expanding the amount earned per character, but the basics still apply.
I suspect there's a flaw in my cost projection as I have never actually tried this or researched what it takes to do so.
I realize it is possible, but how much time did you spend doing this?
The real question I have is: What was the reason for you being banned?
Turbine is pretty easy-going for the most part. They tolerate a lot before giving life time bans. You really have to exploit somethng to the fullest before they do something like that. Other then using the macro exploit, you really have to go out of your way to be complete asshole before even getting a 3 day suspension. Were you one of those people who recieved a life time ban for using a third party macro to exploit?
What ever it was that caused you to recieve a lifetime ban I am sure you know exactly what it was for.
