Howdy folks,
My friends and I have all come to the same, saddening conclusion: We're gamed out - for the exact reasons posted on this forum day after day.
I am beginning to think more and more often that, perhaps, the issue is actually the dislike of MMORPGs overall, as they have become to be known, and the desire for just multiplayer or coop gameplay.
I find that after having had a stint with Champions Online that I can literally only play while my friend plays with me - otherwise I try to log in and grind and it is basically impossible. WoW requires too much of my time to 'witness' end game, but by far has the kind of end game we all desire...to an extent.
Of course EVE and Darkfall provide that 'breath of fresh air,' but there is such little air in space or, better yet, when dead. These games, while massively multiplayer and fantastic in design and concept - EVE, an amazing game which I've had a love/hate relationship with for years now - simply cannot 'keep' me, or us.
So maybe the issue is the desire for something...different? We try to give TF2 a shot, or L4D2, but it doesn't stick, not for long at least. BFBC2 = one map played; an hour spent browsing the 'Net trying to see if some miracle game has come out.
So what ought I do? Just resub to WoW and pretend I'm having fun? Try to find a guild that is active and fun to be with, as to keep me wanting to log on [like I've had in the past]?
Or perhaps [LMAO I almost typed 'herpes', I thought that was hilarious, had to share] I simply need to focus on Global Agenda, League of Legends, SCII and get really, really good at one of them and have 'fun'...but I want...and we want...an MMO. An MMO that is casual and hardcore, and MMO that has no grind but requires work and effort to get the best accomplishments...it's such a paradox, and there are so few ways to see it differently.
TL;DR: Sad, lonely college student and his friends don't get enough from their jobs, studying and watching stupid TV shows and want more out of life and try to find that in MMORPGs, yet no satisfactory MMO seems to exist 'anymore' - wat do?

I kinda know what you are talking about. I have GMMOD or General MMO discomfort. The signs of the sickness are a lingering online or jumping over rocks for 10-15 minutes while you chat guildies or friends but have absolutely no ambition to play. It can also be witnessed when you hop from game to game trying to recapture the fun you swear you once had but actually can't remember due to overwhelming nostalgia.
So far the only remedy I can find is browsing MMORPG.com in hopes of finding something new, playing console games, or running the trial circuit.
Wow, you totally just described what me and alot of my friends have while playing WoW, and every other game.
I'll just be running circles around Dalaran doing nothing, just whispering and talking in guildchat about how bored we are.
And here I am.. surfing mmorpg.com again looking for something interesting to trial.
Christ, some psychologist should look into this, it's got to be an actual developing disorder.
EXACTLY! What im going through right now, even right down to the trying to get into DoTA or LoL and master them but i end up installing it and quitting after a hour of getting steamrolled.
Im in WoW leveling a shaman and waiting for Cataclysm.
Really hoping SWTOR will bring me really back full on.
One of my coworkers actually did a study of the psychological ramifications of MMO's and product detachment. I haven't checked with him since he started last year, but I would love to know those responses.
It could be a disorder, or a realization that "WoW isn't forever," or that where ever we were once comfortable isn't quite pumping out new content at the rate we wanted...or that we simply don't care about that content any more.
Sure, something new and fancy might be awesome, but maybe some new direction altogether is necessary. Something akin to Global Agenda but not quite: a game that "gets right to the point" and allows for fantastically fun multiplayer content quite readily.
Forgo the grind; harvest the happiness. \ Stop grinding; git some lulz.
I don't even think that's the issue anymore.
It's not as if you don't think theres something more fun to do, because you know there is.. you just don't want to do it.
As was mentioned before, it's just a complete detachment from being interested at all. It "could" stem from WoW, but it happens with plenty of other games.
Which is strange, because I never remember being like this with games. I would always be so excited to get a new game and play them for very long periods of time. This all came about with the MMO genre.
Ugh, damn you BLIZZARD.
Why not learn about the physics of nature, it is like a real version of an MMO in the sense that there is a ladder that you can continually climb to gain new skills and explore epic new content. But unlike a game you know it is universal and necessary so it is more satisfying. Mathematics is true forever, it never loses its sense of purpose.
The rewards for this journey are very great, to learn theoretical physics is like learning mental judo, it's not just about increasing your raw thought power / muscle, it is mostly about refining the ability to think, so just like a small woman who knows judo could flip a large man, a person of average intelligence will increase their mental abilities greatly by undertaking this study.
If you are intrigued but not convinced, I recommend to read book VII of Plato's Republic, it explains how mathematics, logic, and philosophy may very well be the things you are searching for to provide an incomparably more satisfying purpose to life.
Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.
Another, possibly related issue, but not really:
Character attachment. I rarely feel it at all in games nowadays. In WoW, yes, but that's likely because we've all had our stint in WoW and remember those characters that we played for years.
There's no real sense of accomplishment or becoming a "legend".
There is one game that really nailed that by having a sort of history of the character that everyone could view, which WoW sort of implemented later, but this game I'm talking about mostly had the record given by other players.
That would be Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds, a very old MMO (relatively)
Bah.
It's always amazing to find a like minded person the vast interwebz. I am actually a philosophy and history major at App. State University. Sadly, however, my logic has rationalize that the only purpose to life is to die...so I might as well try to not waste the time I have to live, thus I must be a sadist - and the specific ways I've found to increase my fun is by playing these darn games...
Oh, the humanity...
you can try turn based mmorpg.
OP is suffering from burnout.
Burnout is nature's way of getting us to try new things.
Take a vacation from MMOs. Do something different like real life golf or bowling.
Well shave my back and call me an elf! -- Oghren
Unfortunately, uquipu, I am one of the OP's RL friends that was mentioned in his initial post. I feel that I am a well rounded person. I read, I golf, I bowl ( occasionally )...I have a wife and a dog and I visit with my family quite regularly. But that can't fill all my time. My wife works an odd schedule, so I'm here sitting at home four nights a week.
We've tried many games lately. But, I think, we've become too critical of the games we try. GRAW 2 is too buggy. Dungeons and Dragons Online is too much of a grind, even though we enjoy the combat and the dungeons themselves. Champions Online has a great character creation process and typically, your character can kick the shit out of everyone, but that gets boring. What fun is there when it's actually hard to die? TF2 and Counter Strike: Source are fun for 3 rounds...then you get tired of being completely face raped by the guys who play all the time. Etc, etc.
At this point, I'm not even sure its about the MMO's. I haven't been able to find a game that I really enjoy, that I haven't already played before. I tried HL2 again, but I just got tired of knowing where enemies spawn and how to kill them quickly. Splinter Cell Conviction looks good, but I'm wary of dropping $60 on a game, only to let it collect virtual dust while I lament the absence of a truly fun and immersive game.
Thanks for all the replies, though. While I dislike seeing so many people riding in the same sinking ship as we are, it's comforting to not be alone...
The solution is simple, try new games. There are tons of Free to play MMORPGS and they do not all suck. If they all sucked there wouldnt be ones with so many players. I recommend finding an mmorpg you enjoy, and then mixing in an FPS game. For the FPS game I recommend Alliance of Valliant Arms, it is simply the best one available I have played them all. Once you found an mmorpg you enjoy, dont play it constantly, mix in the fps game and you wont get bored of playing the mmorpg so much. That worked for me. Im still looking for an mmorpg to enjoy, currently installing Jade Dynasty.
Why don't u just quit? I mean, games are entertainment. If you having fun, play it. if not, quit. Why all the drama? It is not like you are looking for a gf or something.
While I still enjoy Eve I spend most of my gaming time on my sofa with my 360 controller playing GTA4, L4D2 and SF4 on Live.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I have a confession. Despite playing MMO's pretty much non-stop for the past 8 years, this past weekend I dusted off a copy of Fallout 3 that I bought a year or so back but never played and found.... that I reallly enjoyed it.
Something satisfying about running around again with a combat shotgun in my hands (love how fast they get weapons like this to your character) and I spent more time gaming over the weekend than I have in a quite a while.
Still going to play EVE, but I think I'll open up and play some of the single player games that I've been missing recently just prevent burnout for setting in too hard.
edit: Fallout 3 I meant, not HL3

I was going to say to just do other things besides games with your friends. Though when I was in college, though I had time for socializing, I was very busy.
But maybe you should take a break from games and do a sport or throw yourselves into something else for a while.
I'm not a big believer in wasting time unless you can enjoy "wasting" time. So playign a game that you have to pretend is fun is never an option. Life really is too short.
I would just concentrate on your studies, work on making yourself physically fit (you can never be too fit!) and do something postitive. Maybe start a business, don't know what your major is but perhaps you can start working toward your career.

OMG! Kyleran! I thought single player games were for kids!!!! lol jk
FO3 rocks hard, Bethesda makes the best games. Enjoy.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Avencast - If you can put up with ropey graphics it is great for the puzzles.
Divinty 2 - Is a nice bash in a gorgous looking world.
Trine - Is a 2d platform with rpg elements. Very nice graphics and great puzzles.
The Void - They don't make truely new worlds in games anymore, well except for here. If you can handle not knowing what is going on and having to replay half an evenings work because your thinking was wrong, then this is for you.
Thanks for all the great replies folks! I'll take them to heart.
I think for now what I will try and focus on is single player games and real life stuff...but come this summer, I'm really going to need to fulfill my hobby that is MMO gaming. I will sadly probably just resubscribe to WoW. Such is life.
I've also never heard of a few of the games/names tossed out in this thread (e.g. previous poster), so I will most definitely look into those things. Certainly couldn't hurt.
Thanks, folks - great discussion, any other input is more than welcome.
If you are thinking of resubscribing to WoW don't uninstall it, loads of people have installation and patching problems so best just to leave it on your hard drive.
I am in the same boat. Luckily, it's not for all games as it seems for you, just MMOs and to a point, FPSs (IE The 2 PC genres. Besides RTSs, which I've always had issues with, but that's another story).
Every MMO I play just seems... bad. I'm not sure if this is because I grew up since I used to play MMOs, and therefor am more jaded and not full of hope and excitement like I used to be. It might be because I have less friends who are into MMOs now perhaps. Or maybe it has to do with my realization that I don't really like end game in every MMO i've played, so lost all motivation to level. Perhaps it's just that every game takes so much time investment and I've gotten busy with a job and a life and such. Whatver it is... I hate it. >_<
While I can't see how anyone could NOT totally be in love with Bad Company 2 (At least on PC), I too lost my drive to play it after unlocking all the weapons. Same with every call of duty. I think MMO's should look at that. The drive to level, and therefor play, is directly related to how shiney and cool and different the carrot your dangling in front of the player is. And I think they need to start off with shiney rewards right off the bat, none of this "The game doesn't start until your level 20" crap.
I don't know why dev's think they can get away with making downright un-fun elements (read: Grinding) of a game just because its Massive, It's Online, and people pay a subscription for it. I think that philosophy is catching up with them and alot of players are unsubbing to all MMO's like Me, the OP, and alot of the posters here. Or worse yet, they go to the one MMO that is at least realizing a game should be fun: WoW. I hate WoW for all the compromises to it's core philosophy that it's made, and I hate blizzard even more for many, many reasons, but I admit they seem to be the only game in town that doesn't seem to want to punish it's players for paying monthly to play, weather it be through daily quests, entertaining minigames, or XP boosts when things get rough. The endgame is still incredibly stupid and elitest, but if they changed that they'd lose they're precious billion dollar a month playerbase.
While that rant got off topic, the core is: I feel ya, bro.

OP, it sounds like you are just burnt out on the genre.
Maybe its just time to continue leveling your RL character instead...
Honestly, I'm sort of in the same boat. I can't seem to enjoy any of the games I have been playing lately either. The only games I can enjoy are single-player RPGs and they only last for a couple of days. The last MMO I was able to play and actually enjoy was Darkfall... but that game has too many issues as well. I just can't get myself fully IMMERSED in anything these days. Nothing ends up being enjoyable like the games I remember loving years ago. I totally feel your pain.
