MMORPG.com's Bill Murphy returns from the Trion Worlds event in San Fransisco with a report on Trion's newly announced MMORTS, End of Nations.
Petroglyph Games has been a busy studio lately. Formed and fueled by a group of guys and gals that has been making RTS classics for nearly about twenty years, Petroglyph is no stranger to the genre. They have the hotly anticipated Mytheon making its way towards release, but the Trion event wasn’t about the currently in closed beta testing title. No, at the Trion event we hoped to finally learn some solid details about the studio’s enigmatic MMORTS which had only previously been announced with little more than an acronym to accompany it. We were not disappointed.

Thanks to the MMORPG coverage on this today, this game has jumped onto my most anticipated list, maybe even hitting number 2 or 3
This finally sounds like a long over-due reincarnation of Nexon's , "Shattered Galaxy". Very excited.
Just hoping for an expanded PVP system.
This game just jumped to # 1 on my list. I have been waiting for a game like this for years.
End of Nations seems like it could be great. I'm an RTS player, though the genre lately has been a bit of a let down with ever smaller maps and options. Having large and epic battles sounds extremely awesome and I hope they do a great job with the game. I'd also be interested in how they handle PvP, hopefully there is a balance of some sort and griefing it kept at a minimum. I'd hate to be in a tough fight with my friends against the Order of Nations and have a group of players come in and wipe us out just because they can.
I've been imagining what a MMORTS could be like for years now, and based on the details in this article, this game is going to be exactly what I've been hoping for.
Two things from my MMORTS "vision" that I'm still hoping for is some good objective-based PvP, and persistant player-built bases (meaning if I build up a base and log off for awhile, the base doesn't just implode on itself).
Any MMORTS news is exciting right now, it's such a wide open field just begging to be tapped into.
interesting stuff. Going to track this.
Looking forward to seeing how they handle this
Got excited about the game until I realized that it's not a PVP focused game, but a PvE focus. That kind of deflated my interest.
This definitely looks interesting! Thank any-and-all gods, something different!
So if you cant win or lose you just keep building up untill you get bored and move on to the next game. It will work for a little while untill people get tired of either one player or group dominating everything or the status quo just flatlining the game in which playing badly doesnt really mean anything in the end.
I like the Idea of an MMORTS. I like longevity and persistance to a point. In the end though I think a game like that is 10x better if there is a begining and an end with something perhaps carrying over to a new round or at least bragging rights for winning a round where each round could last 6 months to a year. I think this would work really well in a pvpve style of game where their is an AI nation/power that everyone has to contend with to help give the smaller guys a chance.
On the other side I think making an mmo/fps/rts mix game might be cool where they are 2 or 3 seperate games that combine together into one game. IE: The rts game is a set of commanders who build up resources and hire mercenaries/troops which is the FPS/MMO game. The troops are made up of real players instead of AI controlled mobs and they get their stuff from the RTS commanders and what they win on the battlefield.
Anyways the concept as explained in the article above would probably be fun for about a month before I got bored and moved on.
This is a good new, finally a true new massive persistent rts!
This is not really a new genre, many companies already tried to put their hands on the genre, but without great success i think ...
So, lets follow this new baby, and put lot of hope in it!
BUT!
this will be a f2p game, as all petroglyph games, and as Trion economic system it seems ... so:
What will be in the cash shop??
The C/S can alone totally ruin the game, and petroglyph uses to ruin its games with poor CS so ... first bad point maybe
Second, i really do hope they'll clone in some way the good old' Planetside! but there will only be 2 factions so ...
Some PvPvE system, closer of GvG than small non-faction-related skirmishes??
Lets now wait for more news! And lets pray the game doesnt come overhyped, as soooo many those last 2 years
I would be interested if they were doing it like Kingdom Under Fire 2-where you have your units to command but also a character that you command in rta style that would be awesome in my opinion.
This and Rift both sound great, finally a company with at some innovation.
I got excited, until I read that it was PvE
I just watched the CG intro trailer and a gameplay trailer. Holy crap!!! What an incredible looking game! It looks to me as though Trion is moving in on the mmo market pretty much like the super giant battle tank in their trailer, smashing all of their opposition to smithereens. The first ever large scale RTS mmo and a fantastic looking fantasy mmo in the form of Heroes of Telara that uses dynamic content. At long last it looks as though there will be mmos which are actually worth playing. This could quite possibly be the turning point that this stagnating genre has needed for years, as other games companies will be forced to try and compete with this behemoth. Woohoo!
This game looks good, but what looks even better to me - as a gamer who loves MMOs - is that there's a company out there putting a portfolio of decent games together.
I'm personally little tired of the Blizzard monopoly on this and related genres. They have no real competitors and pwn pretty bad with their Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo IPs. Don't get me wrong, I love all these games but with no threats to their position as market leader for... ages, to me these games have kinda stagnated and still have not been replaced with anything better.
Despite not being a keen RTS fan this does look fantastic, as does RIFT and the other sci-fi games there working on. I'm personally more stoked about RIFT, as that's my fav type of game.
