Returning to Hyborea

I was there at the beginning. I loved the detail, the art, the lore, the open PvP. The instanced world not so much, but I was having fun. And then the memory leaks got worse, until it got to the point where even thinking about Old Tarantia sent my computer into a paroxysm of blue screens. I quit.

I am looking to come back in time for Rise of the Godslayer with a new character, a fresh start, and I have a few questions.

Have the memory leaks been fixed? That was my biggest barrier to fun (or even simply playing), and it would be good to know if they've been eliminated.

I enjoy open PvP, but what is the real situation concerning that on a server like Cimmeria? Is it a 24/7 gankfest? Are there respectable clans to petition for membership?

I enjoy RP, but some research has overturned the fact that Wiccania is now the RP server, but a PvE one exclusively. Does it matter much with the battlegrounds (or whatever they call them in AoC)? And how early could I participate in those battlegrounds?

Thank you for any help!

Of course, stability will depend on your computer, but the memory leaks are gone.

Cimmeria is the best server imo.

As far as gank fest, the starting area (tortage) can be rough, but just push through. In fact you can finish tortage without setting foot in the pvp zones, so its not really an issue. After that the world opens up.

Sure you will be attacked, but thats part of the fun, isnt it?  Most of the time, when i was attacked while leveling, I came away victorious. Just be aware of your surroundings, and always be ready. Its a brutal world. That said, its not a gankfest. You are more likely to get attacked randomly based on time of day, and where are you are. You can always just go somewhere else if you get jumped a few times, but its really not a problem.

There are lots of great guilds to join. That will help you with random attacks, having a buddy leveling with you.

As for RP, Cimmeria is a great server for that. There are a lot of RP guilds. Most, if not all, of the RP'ing takes place in-guild, although there are public events as well. If you arent into  RP then dont worry, you wont be forced to.

    enjoy

Stability in AoC is amazing and fluid. RotGS? This will take time.

Good to hear the memory leaks are gone (at least it sounds that way). Thanks. Don't mind if RotGS is laggy, I know now that they'll fix it in time.

Definitely up for grouping to level/have fun with. Going to be out of town this weekend, though. Was going to make a new Khitai character anyways, so I have to wait until the 11th at the earliest to do that.

I recently started playing again and had the same questions as you. I just ended up jumping in feet first and hoped for the best.

I started back again on Chimmera RP-PVP server

Stability is great there are a few lag spikes here and there but if you have a decent system there should be little to no issues on that end.

Gankfest is an understatement. - If you can avoid pvp areas in Tortage then do so if you do venture in be ready for lvl 23-25 characters waiting for you at zone-ins or roaming around looking to come across someone. Sadly I can only play during peak times so it was probly worse for me than it could have been. The biggest tactic I found was for people to wait until you tried to speak to one of the quest npc's then they got a good 10 sec to pew pew you before you can esc out of the cutscene.

I was told by many that it would far better once you left Tortage so I finished up the destiny quest and headed to Old Tarantis the city is smooth and looks good little to no lag that I could tell. The problem I ran into is that I wasnt able to quest once you head out into the quest hubs of your culture areas  its just lvl 30+ people or pairs of mid 20's waiting for you to talk to a quest npc in town to take advantage of the cutscene or they are waiting for you  to leave town and just kill you on spot. I only get to play for 2-4 hours an evening and I typically spend most of my time dodging gankers to get out of town. Once you get out though its smooth sailing.

I also made the mistake of joining a guild while in Tortage that turned out to be pretty unliked on the server. This lead to one evening of just getting stalked by a pair of Sins because they didnt like my guildleader.

I am sure everyone has a different experience and I am still playing although I am pushing myself to do it. I am just hoping that the further I get away from the Tortage community it will get better.  Be wary of Sins they are deadly in the low 20's 3-4 second fights for me on my Conq most of which I am just stunned watching my HP drop.

    Good Luck on the restart.

What I do not understand is why there are still issues within in the game from two years ago...yes - two years ago.     Some of the very same issues we were dealing with 2 years ago are still present in the game.   One of the biggest ones was players are able to attack you while you are in a cutscene or getting a quest.   Why is this still an issue?   Why can you still swim up waterfalls?   Oh yes...still there.   Why is taking even the smallest of jumps from a cliff taking almost all your life?  I'm talking jumping off something  the height of a 55 gallon drum and you take damage and are stunned?  Why?  Why is it still like this in the game?   Jesus...andthis game got the Most Improved of 2009 title?  LMAO where?   Rangers and some other classes still have talents that are frakking useless.  Why?

I would say out of that entire rant only the class issues I would see as something higher priority. Alot of what you listed is just plain nit picking and nothing game breaking in my opinion. Sure being attacked while in quest dialogue is annoying but what do you want them to do? Make the player invulnerable while they talk to the NPC? That would more then likely be exploited to avoid being attacked, and last I checked you can hit ESC to exit dialogue immediately.

I just think that this game isn't for you if you find those above items you listed as glaring issues that destroy the experience. This game is in pretty good shape if that is the worse of the issues. I'm personally still on the fence whether I like this game or not, but I'm giving it another shot now.

No those are not the only issues I just hit the tip of the ice burg with what I posted - and yeah it is a big issue about getting attacked while chatting with an NPC - go look at the Tyranny boards or the Cimmerian ones and both have pages long threads regarding this issue - an issue that has been around since day one.    Oh and yes broken talents are still an issue in some classes and the ones that were not working as intended 2 years ago are still not working!   2 years is plenty of time to fix these minor underlying issues.    You may not think them as major issues, but all of them add up and that means that FunCom doesn't care about the little details(like your character standing on a rock up to their knees instead of on top of it) and that means they care little for their game over all.

Thats the thing, if you'd played the game you would have known how this work. Esc takes you right out of cutscene and then the other guy has an agressor buff on himself. You can do 1 out of 3 things. 1. Sidestep over to the guard, he'll make sure to demolish the agressor (unless you yourself are flagged as an ganker (read criminal or murderer). 2. CC the guy and take off..hide whatever. 3. Kill the fcker.

Look this game is fast paced and fun the way it is now. And it's perfect. Maybe 1 out of 50 Quests people try to bug me... and honestly I think it would be more fun if it was a bit harsher. Please don't ask for some BS safeheaven NPC station people can run to and then suddenly be invulnerable. This system is working as intended in my and many other peoples eyes. This is not something to be fixed... It is the way it was designed to be.

ANother thing.. Do really considder to test a PvE server. Remember theres tons on PvP there too. It's just that the open world PvP is restricted to the Borderland zones. Minigames,  shrines of Bori, Sieges all that other stuff is the same.

guys really, if you are having trouble levelling in a pvp server just reroll on a pve server. then once you reach 80 you can always pay 25$ and transfer to a pvp server. it's that easy, i'v done it with more then 1 of my characters.

levelling on a pvp server is supposed to be hard and ganking is supposed to be annoying and ever present. some people actually anjoy that. but if you dont then go play on a pve server. you can still do minis on pve server, you can still do sieges, you can still do world pvp in the borther lands. seriously pve servers are actually very fun.
