City of Heroes: Issue 17: Dark Mirror Now Live

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Paragon Studios has released Issue 17: Dark Mirror to live servers, coinciding with the game's six year anniversary! Issue 17: Dark Mirror introduces the new Ultra Mode graphics options to the game, enhancing the game's visuals significantly with technology such as ambient occlusion, water reflections, cubemap reflections, and more. The results can often be quite astounding.

Issue 17 isn't all style and no substance, however, as there are also new story arcs, updates to the Mission Architect, the ability to fight your own doppleganger, animated tails, and also marks the early release of the Demon Summoning powerset to Going Rogue pre-order customers.

Paragon Studios has also released a new trailer to mark the occasion, click the image above or go here to take a peek!

I logged into this yesterday and I'm pretty unimpressed. CoH's client has never been the most stable in the world to start with and the Ultra mode gave my Radeon HD4850 hiccups. NCSoft needs to reboot this franchise instead of tacking more onto it. At this point, I doubt that I'll spend any more money on this game, even though I was intrigued by the new demonic powerset. I've played this game on and off since release and I just can't stay interested in it. There are better alternatives.

Lol Then you need a REAL Video card like my NVIDIA Gforce 260 handles Ultra Mode just fine. I have to say I am liking this game as a well rounded alternative to WoW.

Oh bite me. Tell you what, you buy me one and I'll be more than happy to install it and use it. I've played CoH on and off since late beta and the client has always been problematic, no matter what card was used.

I'm sorry you had trouble with your video card, the game runs very smoothly on mine with Ultra Mode enabled.

Edit: Also, if the game runs very problermatically on your computer, you might want to check your RAM and hard drive. The game very much dislikes faulty RAM and an error prone hard drive.

As I said, I was not impressed and nothing anyone says is going to alter that. If you're happy with what Paragon has done with the game, go ahead and spend your money. My hardware is just fine. I can play other games that look and play better to me with no issues. I don't have any obligation to Paragon or NCSoft to gush over what amounts to no more than a little shellac applied to an aging engine that's gone about as far as it can go. Enjoy "Going Rogue" because it will likely be the last big thing City of Heroes will ever see. To me, this superhero game stopped feeling all that "super" a long time ago.

    Enjoy.

I've also not been that impressed with the graphics.  Good but not great but I'm reserving final judgement for GR zones.  I run an ATI 5850, Phenom II 920, 8Gb RAM and just recently put CoH on a Kingston SSD (V series).  Vista 64 bit is still on 640Gb WD Caviar Black.  I like the shadows the best.  Occlusion doesn't do much for me, water looks better and reflections are pretty cool but my biggest beef is, for example, even in Kings Row with no one around, the fps can still dip to around 25fps just by turning.  That's with Shadows at Ultra, no FSAA, reflections at high, occlusion at performance at 1920 x 1080.  i.e. It is not maxed out on settings.  I had finally gotten this game to stay at 60fps, except for around WWs or certain locations redside and certain redside mission maps but with UM, I can't up the quality much without a significant hit to fps.  Inside instances stays at 60fps but I solo mostly and haven't seen what happens with other players around. Past history says the fps goes down.

In short, I feel your pain LordDraekon.  The performance I have on DDO and Dirt2 agree with your comments.

    Wow, talk about arrogance.

Look, you can try to trouble-shoot the problem, I've given you a few suggestions, others have given you suggestions, or you can say "this game is crap and nothing anyone can say will change my mind because it doesn't run well on my computer" and then proceed to badmouth the game for no real reason./

    Now, I suggest you:

    A) Run Check Disk. I had lots of problems with constant crashes on my old computer, but these problems went away if I ran Check Disk every few days. My harddrive was old, and yours probably is took, and errors crop up in old harddrives and there is no way to prevent that. Some programs can take a few errors, others - like City of Heroes - won't tollerate them.

    B) Scan your RAM. There are programs out there that will check your RAM for errors, and if you have older RAM moduals they might be prone to errors, this is simply the nature of aging computer components. Plus, it's better to know sooner than later that your RAM is failing.

    C) Get a new video card. A nVidia GTX 260 will play any modern game on the market, and they aren't too expensive.

This is pretty much how I feel about it.  I don't see what's so great about things that a lot of free to play MMO's now include in their games for free.  Perfect world has been out forever and has some of the best water and effects I've ever seen (and still run at full speed).  Going rogue is going to be another COV move where they came up with something they could charge a big price for instead of adding the content to the game over time to make it a better game for their customers.  The fact that the game has gone this long with the same crowd playing the same missions over and over and grinding the same enemies over and over is amazing to me.(or crazy)

I genuinely love COH for what it is and the initial fun through the game was a blast but for Paragon to make something like this at this point is just a hook for more cash, simple as that.
