I've tried DF on 5 different occasions, and each time I find myself quitting because I can't find anything to do. Mainly because I'm so used to having content written for me to complete. In Darkfall the content is created by the players, but I have yet to get to do any of it.. how do I get the most out of the Darkfall?

Join a clan that does PvP/Sieges. You will most likley be to no use but you get alot to do in a clan. You get to farm with them and get new stuff, see new content of the world etc and do other stuff you cant do alone and also talking to people on vent is a very good aspect of any game to stick with it. But onse you join a clan your expected to farm your combat abilities mainly day out and day in to be of any use in PvP, and that takes time and gold.
Theres not more to it, get a clan. Get social, go farm skills and spells, do some PvP. And thats it. I did quit after my first month, played for like 250 hours, best 250 hours I've spent on a game that I didnt stay with. Quit for the simple reason, to big world, to little world pvp and my computer sucks and lagged in 50000000vs50000000 pvp. But the main reason was the hacking and macroing/afking. But that is mainly gone now I heard.
Join a clan or befriend one. The thing about games where the players create the content is that you most often have to join some kind of social group, which is why most soloer's stay away from games like this and are attracted to WoW-like games.
The next part is for the game to have a wide range of mechanics/features that interact with each other. If a game has this then you'll have more options of things to do. If a game is combat focused/heavy, well, you'll have only combat related options (basically boiling down too "Hey, let's go fight someone!", be it on land, sea or air).
So yeah, I'd look at the guild forums, find one that looks like a fit and try to join them.

Become a nomad and get into enchanting yourself leet sets of gear. You will be forced to move all around Agon and base out of several different location. I think that staying in the same place gets boring eventually. Some mobs that you need for enchanting are in pvp hotspots so it is more exciting and the game seems like much less of a grind imo. You can build skills from many different mobs and since you are not there to grind, it is funner.
There are other things to do but I think that you should definitely find someone to duel with often so that no matter what you are doing, things will be funner because you will see a turn around in how fights end up.
Anyways, that is all my advice for now . .. I recommend not joining a clan unless you are sure that you will be helped more than hindered. Being required to live out of a clan city is very lame, especially if it is on a corner continent . ..

Contrary to this, I'd highly recommend you join a clan before attempting to play the game solo. Being in a clan will give you things to do; PvP events, PvE runs, sieges, politics, ship combat etc. Once you "get" what the game is about and how to have fun you should have enough knowledge to give you direction as a solo player.
There is no such thing like 'player created content', unless you let the players create and add the code.
Darkfall has got linear gameplay and there is simply nothing else to do.
Until you grind for a long time there isn't that much to do other crafting and a few quests.
Things might change by the end of the year but who knows.
I think you really need to enjoy grinding and the limited competitive pvp you get to enjoy this game early on.
You need to enjoy the combat system and character building and/or crafting.
I like the fighting aspect of the the game which to me makes the grinding more enjoyable. I also like the stat and skill based character building much better then the leveled based kind. I like the fact you can just do any thing in the game with the exception of casting all the spell until you have grinded to them.
Well Darkfall isn't for everyone so if you are new to the sandbox style I'll recommend the following:
Ask yourself which kind of "class" you want to create? Then move on choose the right skills to focus on. I wouldn't recommend you magic because its expensive you better build a melee char and skill herbalism which should grant you a good amount of return. There are really hard mobs in this game in order to get the next level you need to find a clan. Don't be disappointed if they're having clan wars without you, your time will come.
Having that said sandbox content and classes are what you make out of them.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
