    Seconds after you :P

So all along the developers haven't even been in the United States. All along many people thought that the developers were working hard with Epic Games for a solution. Turns out they were just ignoring everyone.

If you havent heard about the volcano on iceland and that the flights dont always depart you must be really isolated.

  • ZookzZookz Member Posts: 244

I'm not trying to defend SV, but you do realize that there actually was/is a volcano spewing ash and lava in Iceland?

    http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/04/19/iceland-volcano-ash-coming-america/

Up to 63,000 flights have been cancelled in Europe due to the volcanic eruption at Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which has spewed dust and ash across the country at a tremendous rate. Within the first 72 hours of the eruption, Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences reported the average discharge rate of ash at 750 tons per second -- a rate that could fill Yankee Stadium every few seconds.

So what exactly is your point?

So what exactly is your point?

You realize that they said they were sending developers on April 1st and the dates on the flight cancellations are like 15th-16th? If they did indeed plan on leaving the 15 or 16th for the U.S theres no way that they would have been able to get back within the end of the month to fulfill the "April release date" proposed by Henrik.

In other words. They knew they couldn't keep the goal, but they wanted to keep the hype, so instead of telling the truth they smoked and mirrored their press release.

OH, if only I had worded this differently. I could pretend I predicted everything...

    @ Nightcloak:

Many people share your feelings about preordering.  I don't think anyone has argued against taking a wait and see approach rather than ordering the game while it's still in development. Personally, I wouldn't particularly mind the money even if the Dev team got killed by an Icelandic volcanic ash cloud and the game never released.  Because of that, preordering was the right choice for me.

    @HanoverZ:

In what way does a plan to fly to the US during April not match up with a volcanic eruption on April 14th that disrupted air travel for much of the month (through at least the 24th for sweden) ?

    Why do people on these forums talk so much rubbish;

1.) SV said they were going to send people over to the US so they could fix issues with their help instead of suffering delays in communication. They never gave us the impression they had people over there already.

2.) The so called billing issue is nothing more than a few uneducated people forgetting they can't charge you without a payment plan and payment details and the fact SV doesn't have their own billing vendor. Conspiracy theory over.

3.) This Volcano has caused many flights to be postponed/delayed, again no patch delay conspiracy.

First of all, i'd like to point out that you use the headbanging emote far too much.  If their account of events doesn't match up with your impression of their plan, maybe your impression was wrong.  I don't recall them saying anything more specific than "April".  Feel free to post a link if you find something more specific about the travel itinerary.

Considering they said they were shooting for an april release date, you'd think they would have left early in the month in order to have as much time as possible when they got back to fix anything that didn't come up when they met with Epic Games.

I really could hardly believe it when I read the post. I understand that there are some things lost in translation when we get updates from Starvault, but this new update completely conflicts with what they’ve told us about their progress before now, and basically states that this entire time that they were supposedly visiting EPIC games they have really not even managed to escape the volcano and get to North America.

    Dear community

We apologize that we are late in giving you this information; this is also one of the “downsides” of being a public listed stock company. We cannot give information how we want and when we want it in some cases when it affect the stock market.

As you are aware of we are soon to deploy our April build. (Described here http://www.mortalonline.com/content/under-development)

Unfortunately because of the volcano on Island it prevented our trip to the US so we have a slight delay in our schedule, this doesn’t mean we are delaying for a longer period. We are going to send our guys to Epic Games this weekend so we can get back on track with our release. This is the finalizing phase for releasing Mortal Online.

As soon as our guys are located at Epic Games, we will move the April build to the live testing server where we need your support in testing all of our release features. This is scheduled to be short testing periods till we go live so we need your feedback during these short testing phases.

Now we are getting really close in going live with Mortal Online, it’s exciting times for us all, please bare with us with the last testing phases we need in the coming week to get a as solid release as possible.

More updates on the first test phase comes soon.

    Thank you.

    -Star Vault Team

So basically, although they were supposedly in North America over the entire last month, and we’ve been told that what we’re waiting for is their progress there, and their return, we now are to infer that no progress has been made this entire time, and that there was no reason for them to be too busy to update us other than that they were worried about it influencing their trading value. Wow. They seem to be working under the assumption that misleading their investors will yield better results than keeping them up to date and being open about temporary setbacks. Heh, maybe I don’t understand business at all, but I don’t really see that making a lot of sense.  At least the post (in a tragic kinda way) is pretty funny.

Optimistically, maybe since they’ve been landlocked in Europe they’ve been making the most of this time to work on new content that didn’t require the build merger the visit to North America was supposed to accomplish. Realistically though, it seems like that is a lot to hope for, given the work ethic exemplified by them here. As always, we’ll have to just wait to find out the truth until the next time Henrik or Sebastian come into IRC drunk and tell it like it is.

From Henrik later in the thread:

How amazing it may seem to be for some it’s a fact that the volcano on Iceland stopped our previous planned trip to the US. Which was in the middle of April, hence the finalizing phase of Mortal Online was a bit delayed. Since we want Epic to be part of the release making it as good as possible we had to wait till we could send our guys to Epic which is now available for us. This means instead of sending the guys in the middle of April we are sending them now. (this weekend) This does not mean we have stood completely still since then. (it’s just a matter of some days here guys, time for us to polish some more on different areas which you have pointed out for us by testing the beta)

    Also,

The merge have been done for some time now, some weeks actually, we didn’t need to be at Epics to be able to merge, this was something we had to do on our own as our guys knows our codes better than Epic Games.

What we are doing now is making all our features to work in the new April build What Epic Games is doing here is, finalizing the game with us, (Atlas related codes communicating with our feature codes) helping us with bugs and making it a better game. They do want to show what Atlas can deliver in a full scale seamless mmorpg via Mortal Online so they have much to profit on Mortal Online. We work very closely together to get it as good as possible. What major client would be interesting in Atlas if its causing “desync” either you have your own game codes in it or not? Therefore you can understand they are as willing to work on this as we are.

So far everything seem very stable and well build within the core we are using now "April build" But we have a few areas which we need their input, they will also go through our codes/areas to help us optimize it with Atlas. This is why it is important some of our programmers are within the Epic team while we go live with the April build and release phase, as it will help the entire release of Mortal Online.

I hope this answered the questions and thoughts I saw some people had.

While you wait for this I think there will be “something” for you during this weekend"

    Nice.

Didn't expect to find his reply buried half way down page 2.

    Thanks.

I think this one might have been more of a rushed response; it could just be me, but it seems a little unclear on the actual progress details, and having grown up playing online games I can normally wrap my head around second-language english text pretty well. I'm still left with the feeling that they intentionally gave us the impression they've been working with EPIC games over the last month or so, and that it had a large bit to do with the patch and release delay... only to be told later they haven't even been there yet.

He replied again a little later in the thread, too:

Any clarification on that?

That's hilarious. I also love the defenders in this thread that have no clue that the team was suppose to be in the US long before the volcano exploded. New fanbois? Really? That surprises me.

Well I think the confusion was caused by this statement Henrick made:

"We will also fly some of our programmers to the US where Epic Games are located to work within their team to get their fully support on our game and update of the network structure in an efficient way other than distance cooperation. This will improve the speed and quality of us going into the latest build of Unreal Engine and the network solution which should eliminate most of our current issues, both in performance and network wise."

So I think most folks took that at face value.. that SV was heading to the US to work with Epic to help them quickly and accurately transfer to the new Unreal build.

StarVault must be one of the most shadiest dev companies out there. Anyone thinking that the "Volcano" excuse is the main reason they still havent left for US are naive. Hint for you: the cancellations lasted for a week or so and they have been saying they are going to US for almost a month.

In Sweden, the disruption lasted considerably longer.

Eyjafjallajökull erupted on March 20th.  Continuing volcanic activity caused a major ash plume to form on April 14th, which stopped all air travel in large sections of Europe (including Sweden). If  the programmers were scheduled to travel in Mid-April this required them to change that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_eruptions_of_Eyjafjallaj%C3%B6kull

    5) Eyjafjallajökull put out another large ash plume on April 23rd further disrupting air trafiic throughout Europe. http://news.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978192263

Henrick announced the April build the day before thissecond plume.  Its likely that at the time he was anticipating the trip to Europe  being made the next week, which then had to be cancelled because due to the ash plume.

Even a single day of disruption causes a significant backlog of people who HAVE to make the flight which can make it hard to schedule a flight even after flights resume.  Any plans that involved travel between Sweden and the US during April had at least a 30-40% chance of being disrupted (depending on the dates planned).  Do you have any reason to believe that their plans weren't disrupted by the volcano (i.e. they indicated the trip would be  on April 3rd) ?
