I find this literal definition to be too broad. By this perspective, war propaganda for example may fall under the definition of "trolling". Citing the press releases of the Iraqi war and information ministers in '91, claiming american forces had no adverse effect on their defensive force was clearly illogical and served absolutely no function (as tens of thousands of Iraqi forces surrendered daily). So were they trolling?

If you hit on a girl in a bar and she tells you she has herpes or is a lesbian, is she trolling you?

Mis-information is a tactic intentionally used to re-direct or outright halt undesired progression. A witness many times has little to no inclination as to the validity of the statement or the ultimate ends of the contradictory endeavor, and must resign to act according to whatever other means are available.

Another example, by posting dictionary definitions, laughing-man could be trolling me, but by my resolve to often give people the benefit of the doubt I may respond in what I consider to be a constructive manner.

The word doesn't even belong to the English dictionary... Coincidence? No. They had to invent a word in order to do this sort of nonsense black sheep naming.

    Very droll.

Cos, like, humans never do anything new, and language is accordingly completely static....

I need to understand this concept of trolling. Because ever Tom, Dick and Harry uses this as weapon against posters.

My exploits on this site have been limited to the STO forum section. Where I have voiced my opinion and dissolution about Star Trek Online. I don't have much to say positively about the game but seeing I can not post on the Official forums because I don't subscribe any longer I post here.

I monitor the official website and when I see interesting information I relay it here because regularly the moderators of STO forums delete / edit or lock threads which have negative feedback. Like discontinuing Telephone support and deleting the references to it in post!

1)So is having a negative view of a game ...TROLLING?

    2)Is voicing your opinion ...TROLLING?

3)Is it only TROLLING when someone else says it is?

4)Is it only TROLLING when its contrary to another opinion?

    Or non of the above....

Please help me understand the error of my ways!

Not sure if it was answered, don't want to read it all as my download is nearly done. Trolling is when someone follows you around the forum trying to start flame wars with you. Generally they will catch your posts and reply opening with a stupid little insult. They will keep doing that until yuou blow up  at which time they QQ and try to make you out as a monster. It's a little kids game, they want attention and would never try such a thing to anyones face. If someone starts following you around a forum doing this, simply report them. If someone insults you, does not make them a troll, but if you find them taking shots at many of your posts (at you) over time, it's a troll.

I have been banned for that myth several times.
Forums are for discussion, even if they are baiting posts in nature, they trigger discussion which is the whole point of a forum like this IMO.
And in the end, if a post really annoys someone, they are free to not read it or even put the person on ignore.
    Guess I'm just trolling here.
Well said. I think the reporting process is flawed here, as clearly - only one complaint (because you can't report something that has alreeady been reported) is enough to result in a warning or ban.
Clearly in MMORPG's eyes - trolling is any post which prompts someone to report it as trolling.

Wow, that's.. so Orwellian. It's disgusting in it's oppressiveness. A discussion board where you have to walk on egg shells with your own statements is a useless discussion board.

No offense to mmorpg.com, I love the place, but I have a deep-seated hatred of the state that heavy moderation leads too.
