Final Fantasy XIV: A Talk With Robert Peeler

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com's Derek Gordon recently spoke with Robert Peeler, the Community Planner and Service Manager for Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIV about the game.

Launch Info

Here is a pre-alpha look at some of the things I can confirm we will see with Final Fantasy XIV. Let's start with the biggest question I have been hearing from a lot of people. What is going to happen to Final Fantasy XI? I can confirm that Final Fantasy not only will remain supported by Square Enix, I can also tell you that a new lead developer has been hired to continue working on Final Fantasy XI. If anyone was worried about it, you can rest assured that XI will remain a focus for Square Enix.

Well, we know it will be called Final Fantasy XIV. Other than that, very few answered questions here. What's the point, besides PR?

Most of the information has already been released by the developers Hiromichi and Sundi directly. The interesting part is that now we know there will be pros/cons to using armor depending on your discipline. Watching a mage using plate armor will be quite an interesting sight!

The game is going to have an attack bar similar to other final fantasy games. After each attack, you will have a short time you will have to wait for the bar to fill back up before you can attack again.

Comment: Not surprising FFXIII has the same type of bars

Why two bars? You will be able to do a weak attack with strong accuracy and a strong attack with weak accuracy. Due to the attack bar system, you will have to plan attacks out while you are in combat.

Comment: Reminds me of Chrono Cross

Questing is going to be similar to most games. In the pictures I provided, you see those three crystals. That is actually where this character got quests. It's not going to be like XI where you randomly talk to people and hope they have quests for you. You are actually going to be able to get quests in the game that will help you improve your skills without spending hours trying to find them.

Comment: This reminds me of another thread here on MMORPG, how the game is being made more user friendly, but not easier.

yea I thought the same thing... All of the interviews have been exactly the same stuff.  I can't wait for Tokyo Games Con to start so we can get some new info. How great would it be if they showed up there with the Beta version? please? anyway... little over a week and we should have some new stuff to sink our teeth into

we will have to wait for TGS for some more "new" info.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

Any PR is good PR :)

I enjoy just seeing anything on FFXIV, even if its little things new...at the least the parallel drawn to Oblivion is a 'new' angle from a majority of interview information I've read :)

And it better be out by 2011!  they were saying Q2 2010 a while ago...but good ol' devs and their time frames...(It better beat Old Republic to release <_< just so I don't have 2 summers in a row of stagnation)

I hate to get hyped up but FFXIV is sounding better and better every time i hear more. :)

    Still confused about zoning.

At first, we believed that there was no zoning and that the world was going to be seamless.

Then Famitsu published an article saying that this belief was likely due to an error in translation, and that the world will not be seamless, but zones will be much larger (the size of an FFXI region).

Now we are hearing that it's going to be seamless again?

Now I'm even more excited about FFXIV. I loved Oblivion, and any reference to it in the MMO context is really exhilarating.

True and i may be a bit bias on this, but from my experiences with square enix they know how to get the job done and have the resources to do so.

So they have my complete trust, they are one of the very few gaming companies that i fully trust. Just becuase how professional they are.

As long as they listen to the right people, this game will be fine. But i have faith they will. :p

The thing i'm more worried in is the auto attack removed, I don't like button mashing =/ hopefully there will be an option or macro maybe.

Ewww Button mashing should have no place in a mmorpg!! that's 1 of the things that made that "other" game suck and everything that copyed it :P

I'll stay with FFXI if XIV ends up being a Button Masher (No thanks.)

(Auto-Attack) (Yes, please.) keeps people talking to each other as they fight :)

The only way I can accept it is if it is a hack and slash mmorpg no other way, it would also help a joystick support in this type of game.

We are giving you LESS,REMOVING that and removing this, making it all solo.We are basically going to give you 30% of FFXI,have you login for the sole purpose to do weapon skillups, solo all the time except when you want to do that boss or RAID.IMO they are turning the game play into WOW,and taking the best parts of FFXI and removing them, how can the left over product possibly be any good?

I have yet to see anything that points to Square doing MORE and making things better,EVERYTHING points to a streamlined game.If they thought they could get away with it ,i am sure they would have removed one of the class also probably the Galkan, everything points to a less effort.

This will be a better looking game ,better looking cinematics, the usual great storyline, music score, all at the cost of weakening game play, that part i firmly believe will be poor.

Here is my take on the two hand idea and the reason for it.

Left+up and right+ down =combo.weather it is pre defined combos or having to burn your eyes out glaring at the screen for flashed combo moves,IDK,but this is basically what they will be giving us ,i am sure of it.

I think your overreacting a bit. They are thinking somewhat out of the box with this game and going a slightly ifferent way, and im glad for it. Just have faith man. Square enix imo doesnt make very many bad games.

I was really hoping this game would be more group oriented than the typical "solo with some group bosses" >.> now I'm disappointed. Also, I've never understood the claim that FFXI was "turn based". The weapons had longer delays than most games, but it wasn't turn based... using a dagger, there were times when I got in 2 attacks before my opponent. Using a Great Axe, there were times when my opponent got 3 rounds in before my swing. There were times when we both swung at the same time. I could cast at pretty much any time, with the exception of the possibility of getting interrupted, which exists in many (if not most) MMOs.  I could also use weapon-skills at any time, as long as I had the TP. In fact, one of my favorite things to do was to fire off a multiple-hit weaponskill right as my auto attack fired. That's not turn-based in any sense >.> And then there's the comparison to Oblivion... I probably haven't seen as much of the game as the writer of the article, but from what I can tell, the only thing that it has in common with Oblivion is skill-based advancement; but even that isn't completely true, since you DO have levels in Oblivion, and character classes aren't bound to certain weapons like they are in FFXIV; in fact, you can't change classes after character creation in Oblivion at all (past the tutorial instance). Controls and POV are far different from the crosshair-based first person click-to-swing, manual blocking Oblivion (although lack of auto attack DOES bring it a bit closer). And then there's the quest NPCs being marked with an icon above their heads, also thankfully absent from Oblivion. Mortal Online looks far more like Oblivion than FFXIV.

On the plus side, I learned more about the quest system than I knew. Quest NPCs will be marked by a crystal. Typical. Oh, and it'll be solo based with some group bosses. typical.

Very much disappointed, especially for the solo focus, but still excited for the game. There are a lot of original things that it is doing that should be interesting, and it is doubtful that Square would mess this up, as awesome as they are (although I didn't much like the combat system in FFXII).

    Edited for verb tense agreement.

Edit 2: Added more about FFXI being "turn based".

Edit 3: I didn't like the combat system in FFXII*

I'm looking forward to more info about the game. I like the addition of solo-friendly content as one of my main gripes with XI was having no choice about grouping after 15 if I wasn't playing BST. Simply put I pay a monthly fee to play a MMO, not to sit in Jueno or w/e LFG for 6+ hours because people only want to team w/ my class in certain lvl ranges.

Until I see that nasty group of words "turn based" out I won't even give the game a second look. Honestly the FF community needs to tell these developers to look past the 90s and into Real-Time or at least more action oriented combat systems. Of course I won't lie NWN had a semi-turned based system and it was still awesome, and in truth all push-button MMO's are at least somewhat turn-based. But still its a old system that needs to die, or at the very least not be labeled as 'turn-based.'

    hehe

It really isn't turned based, and if you have been reading a lot of people have been complaining saying that 14 is looking less and less like the game they wanted (FFXI reborn)

This game is going to be a lot more action based, where you have to pick what you want to do every second or so rather than waiting 30 seconds to make a choice as to what ability to use.  I'm sorry I played a warrior, dragoon, ninja, plenty of classes in FFXI and they are all auto attack for 30 or more seconds and then finally do something.  That is dull.  I don't want to do that again.

The system they propose encourages me a great deal and I now am actually excited, before I was dreading the idea that they might have a slow paced combat system once again, but its looking like they will finally have us quick thinking rather than sitting around on our butts waiting to get off a weapon skill.

    Can't wait for 14 now.

  • I played XI seriously for years, from US beta until about 2 years ago.  I absolutely loved it.  I love the play mechanics, the strategy, the class setup etc...It was amazing to be able to play my Ninja/Black mage or chose to go War/Ninja to tank or WAR/SAM or /THF with my GAX to lay out some serious damage.  Even how I could Sub almost anything to My Dragoon for different play styles. Not only that, it was unique.  It had and RPG feel on a massively multi-player level.  It was hard, challenging and intricate. It was fun.

There was one major flaw though, and you can argue with me on it but, it sorely lacked in the solo department.  I wasn't able yto go out and accomplish much by myself at times.  The pure difficulty of the game limited a lot of solo activity, be it farming, skilling or plain XPing.  So most of the time I waited for a party to pick me up, hedging my bets on whether I would get picked one night, hopinh they wouldn't disband fifteen minutes after I arrived.  Or hoping half of a group wouldn't bail on mission runs when they were planned in advance.  Paying to wait, or find something to fill your time while you waited was terribly annoying.  I can't count how many endless hours I had in Jeuno or Whitegate waiting....waiting...then! A group!  ....disbanded.  ...waiting...waiting...ZM Run! Not needed/Too full/wrong LS/geared wrong for the mission etc...

Toward the end of my involvement in XI I was a very casual player.  I would log on to grab a quick merit session, farm a bit for some high end gear, or help with a mission but I couldn't get involved in anything endgame.  It seemed like you had to live your life around XI to get things done in game which was something I was not willing to do.  I couldn't stand up friends every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday to do Dynamis, Sky or Sea just so I MIGHT earn points to get gear maybe a month or month down the road. Gear I 'needed' to be included in other endgame activities.

It all was very disheartening. It began to feel like a job, not a game. IT was not fun any longer.

Now FFXIV is coming out and looks to be aimed more at people who don't want an MMO to be their life.  Some elements are staying and it looks like they're even improving some (How basically switching your equip on the fly changes your class.  No more porting halfway around the world to change your class).  Fourteen looks aimed at people who got frustrated with the rigor of XI's society and endgame workings yet loved quite a bit else about the game.  Basically I think they made it more friendly to jump in and play.  You won't need to spend half a year on mission sets and such just to gear your character so you can do passably well at your job(I hope).

It just seems square made a game similar to XI but, for people who had more to do on their agenda than an MMO.  It's not XI reborn and it won't be for everyone but, I think it will be right up a lot of peoples alley, especially old XI veterans who got tired of the grind.

I'm excited, I might be able to get the same satisfaction as I did with XI and possibly without the madness.

    (P.S. sorry for the length)

  • JamkullJamkull Member UncommonPosts: 214

At least it has a solo element this time around. That was a big game killer for me in ffxi. Because I hated waiting around for hours for group. Overall it sounds real positive and fun.

  • lunatislunatis Member UncommonPosts: 261

I can't wait for this game to come out. I tried Aion and really hated it, even if I'm a big fan of PVP, I really thought that the PVE and crafting system sucked, plus the story was TERRIBLE.

Now with FF I know what to expect, on the story side, and also the crafting system seems amazing, and the skill system is just what I love, as I was a big Ultima Online fan and loved skill raising!

I hope the release will be 2010 and I will surely pre-order, plus order a new graphics card I guess as this beast seems to eat a lot of memory.

    about class system...

if u can't change weapons during fight, does that mean u can't use different class powers during it?

for example, if ur a master mage and decided to train sub-class as a warrior. As a warrior u can't use magic, and as mage u can't use ur warrior's skills ( since to use them u need to wield stuff(or other magic item)/sword). if it's harder to earn lvls as a warrior(in case you need to gather more xp for every lvl) then wouldn't everyone just stick to their master-class?

so here's a question:  is there any mistake? cuz it is said that the game would be flexible, but if training sub-class would be harder than creating new character, what's the point?(i'm asuming that u have no limit to lvling in different classes and for every such lvl u need more xp)

(if u didn't understand me, sorry, i'm bad at english)
