Seeing that PvP is (or can be) an important part of your MMO experience, it'd be interesting to see which MMO's have done their homework satisfactorily.
This is my list of the MMO's, that I've played and know of, that shine in their implementation of PvP,
in several categories:
massive PvP: we're talking massive numbers here. I'd say EVE Online beats all others in depth, tactics and scale of massive warfare. A deserved 2nd place I'd give Planetside, that made land-based scifi combat feel as if you were in the middle of a warzone. Tanks, planes, cannons, snipers, you name it, it was there. A shared 3rd I'd give Dark Age of Camelot with its back-then innovative RvR combat (3 factions) and Aion with its Abyss warfare.
Team PvP: basically up till raid numbers and somewhat beyond. 1st place I'd give Guild Wars with its versatile skills combat. I've seen a large variety of very different and creative team tactics, not seen in any other MMO. Those who've played Magic: the Gathering can understand what I mean, the large diversity in different team tactics and skills combos in GW resembled Magic: the Gathering's system a lot. As 2nd I'd say WoW. Even though Battlegrounds ruined world PvP somewhat, the Battlegrounds was a lot of fun, and a diverse collection of goals and tactics could be used in it.
Player PvP: this was the hardest, actually, because the differences aren't that large, i liked the 1v1 PvP in most of the MMO's I played. Personal choice no 1 is AoC, just because positioning that matters in melee combat, the combos and the awesome feel of fatalities. No close combat PvP feels as visceral and satisfying as the closure of the defeat of an enemy with chopping or ripping someone's head off (barbarian class example)or burying your mace into the body of your opponent.
Additionally, I'd mention Mount & Blade. I haven't played it and it isn't really a MMO, but I have heard it commented a lot that combat in MMO's should be more like it is in Mount & Blade. From what I hear it has a very engaging combat mechanics that sets it apart from what's common in MMO's.

Mount & Blades Combat was really simple, Left click to attack, Right Click to Block(sheild) 2handed or 1 handed get parry
Would be awesome to see that in a mmo! Just increase the HP(avg was 50-80 in M & put fanstey sticker on it..create speical moves "Sheild bash" for diff weapons you have(all of that is blockable/dodged(move out of the way) of course and it would make a good pvp in my mind.
Played:TheRealm,FFXI,WoW,FE,Eve
Playing: Nothing( stuck on a ship)
Future play: FFXIV,SW:TOR
I like 1 on 1 pvp and also the massive... Because in 1 on 1 you get to learn by yourself and you won't be blaming anyone in about your fault if you lose in the battle. In massive of course it's a team work and you need to cooperate with your team to be able to win the game....
small group!guild wars
huge number!aika or silkroad
arena!world of warcraft!
Asheron call 1 had the best PVP and prolly still does hands down.,. AC and UO did FFA right , games like darkfall, MO they try to... I like dark fall don't get me wrong but eh..
before when i play flyff online is like their pvp but things change when they put updates now i happen to love turn base pvp ^_^
Now: Darkfall, EvE and Aion
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
Attacks in M&B is not that simple. You can steer your attacks with the mouse. Left mouse movement and L -click is lefts slach, right movement right slash. Forward = overhead attack. Downward= stab.
Also you can faint your attack.
You got a kick attack to interupt your opponent
Parrying online is set on most servers on manual, so you actualy have to pary the attack in the corresponding direction.
A plethora of weapons with their own characteristics. Not all weapons you can use the same, some you can't stap with. Others when using shield you can only stab.
Becomming good in combat in M&B requires practice and skill.
Online play battles can go up to 128vs128 I myself only played 64vs64.
They should make an MMO with M&B gameplay, actually they should make an MMO out of M&B.
