looking for a new mmo

ormstungaormstunga Member Posts: 736

Hi fellas.

As title says, I'm looking for a new mmo and could use some advice. Been playing mmo's nonstop for little over 7 years. I never play anything outside of mmo's anymore (well, pc wise that is, I still consider myself fairly social and besides I got a Wii! ;>). SWG was my first game and yes I still secretly wish I could go back to pre-CU but nevermind that. Been playing some warhammer, wow, vanguard and lotro in no particular order last couple of years and had some good times in all of them but as guilds die or fade away I usually find its time to move along especially after having done pretty much everything each game has to offer I see no reason to stick around and 'farm'.

No more boring stuff about me, this is where you guys come in:

How's Aion?

Give it to me straight I can handle it!

How's

*pvp

*pve

*leveling

*class balance

*performance

*crafting and economy

*grind

Is it generally amazingly grindy in all areas? Will I have to grind stuff(like those stones or sumfin) to pvp/pve? Is there room for solo pvp in the abyss? Is it groupheavy or can one log in for some fast and simple fun at any level? I dont mind grouping ofc, its just that I'm at a point right now where I cant commit to grouping or say dungeons for hours... will that limit my fun? Also the economy and crafting part is somewhat important to me. Player crafting has to be viable, and there has to be some kind of player driver economy with resources etc.

Ye lots of questions but really any input on the subject is appreciated guys thx in advance =D

I would love to see all this stuff also but first hand ;). Too bad there is no trial. I guess you can post here in the sticky to request a buddy invite that lasts a few hours (you probably spend more time downloading the game then actually getting to try it out). I made a post in that sticky but i really think the requests fall on deaf ears for the most part, i can see a potential problem getting new people like this. But here is to hoping i can at least try it out before making the choice to buy it or not, i really need a new mmorpg.

    How's

*pvp The pvp is good fun, i enjoy the sieges, I have a good computer so i dont get the lag some people get. The game has good gfx so if you have the com to run with lots of ppl on the screen ul be good, if you dont you can turn ur settings down and shift F12 to take peeps of the sceen. Rifting is also fun, stealthing around the other factions land trying not to die killing on the way :D

*pve There are plenty of quests, if you follow the story and quests follow ups. good group and solo activity i found.

*leveling I found the lvling fine, I got to lvl 50 in about 3 months, if thats what your interested in. ( but trying to grind as fast you can to max lvl is what burns most out, and then they moan. Enjoy the game i say.)

*class balance I'm pretty sure the balance is very good, i hear no complaints. Each class has to find its own way to attack each class, but once figured out you have a good chance against them. With plenty of ways to define your class, with manastones, stigmas and different stated armour and weapons.

*performance is great, as i mentioned above with seiges, this may be your ownly problem.

*crafting and economy The crafting is good fun and collecting your ingredients is easy also. lvl your gathering as you lvl and its fine, or wait till lvl 50 and go back to the start and blitz it, its up to you :D

*grind Some ppl say yes some ppl say no, I personally say no, it may have gotten a little slow at times, but with a little persistance and gelp from friends you get through it, but that happens in most mmo's.

If you like the look of Aion, come have ago, you wont be dissapointed imo. If your just looking for another mmo to pass the time, then maybe research a little more. There have been complaints about quests/grind and soul healing and travel to exspensive, but with version 1.9 around the corner, these probs are being sorted. Also with double xp weekends everyother wkend, its all good :D hope i have helped

Yeah it's a shame. I'd really like to give it a try but I'm not willing to buy it without being able to play a trial. Oh well.

pvp in Aion is a lot like WoW with better graphics, combat animation and spell effetcs. it is truly nice to look at and pretty fun but it not really innovative by any means.

Pve is just like 90% of all other mmos out there. quests that send you to kill X number of mobs and get Y number of pelts etc, stc. there are group quests and some travelling quests, as well as some story driven quests. i'v never really bothered to read much of the story so i can't really comment on that.

leveling is fine untill you get to level 30 and up. then it really becomes slow. at level 40 and up it drags, especially since there are less variety o fquests to do. wile each level does feel like an accomplishment  i do wish there were more level 40 and up quests do you wouldn't have to farm mobs for so long just to level. they will be addressing this xp situation in the next big patch.

class balance is ok. wile there are a few classes (templar, glad ) that are somwhat disadvantaged especially in single aerial combat in group pvp all classes are very usefull. because of how the rift system works there is a overwelming abbundance of rangers and sinss playing this game. ranged classes have it pretty easy especially in aerial combat.

i'v never had a problme with performance except in large sieges where lag would make things kinda slow, but i'm talking about 50+ players in a very small area. when you factor in all the grait graphics and complex animations it's actually very smooth game.

crafting is a roll of the dice with very low odds especially for high quality armor and weappons. it is expencive and can be quite time consuming, but it does give xp so it can be part of levelling. economy really depends on what server you are on.

the grind?....yes there is a grind. ok so i'v never played Liniage but i have herd it's not quite as bad in Aion. still it's there. levelling, Abyss points, gold , mats for crafting, soul healing every time you die, money for stygmas, just about everything you do in this game requires a lot of farming something. wile it's nice that nothing is given for free and on the contrary everything takes time it does at times get to you. this game definately rewards patience and long hours.

Unfortunately, there is no good mmo on the market today. Perhaps stand alone PC game such as Mafia 2 will be released in August, then Civilization 5 in September. I just resubed Pirates of Carribean Online, it is very boring game at lv42 but if you only want to play 1 month, you may have some fun. All F2P cost more money to play than monthly subscription game.

After playing Aion for 5 months, I got grinding disease. I am not able to play any grinding like Aion anymore for the next 100 years.

    Thx for the input guys.

I actually dont mind it being sort of grindy, I find that sometimes that just adds to the pleasure of finally getting the 'reward' whatever it might be. Sure there's a limit to how much grinding I can take aswell, guess the only way to find out it to play it.

I'd like to know more about the singleplayer aspect of Aion. From what I gather its quite possible to level up 30-50 solo but it'll be pretty rough. Is there any endgame for soloers? Can I advance my characters gear/crafting and whatever matters in Aion by soloplay? Is it impossible, will I pretty much be 'forced' to join an alliance? Or will it just be a real struggle?

Heya, I too am interested in Aion. After requesting a trial key twice and waiting a month with no response I think I'm just going to take the plunge and buy it. Its on sale today at direct2drive.com for $24.95 so it won't be too bad if I don't enjoy it.

I would give you a trial key but believe you don't get them right away. If anyone else ends up buying it maybe we can meet up and play together, be nice to have a few other people new to the game with me!

Oh it's not rought at all.

If you want to zoom to 50 then ok, it's rough. If you come from wow it's rough. But if you've played older games, Lineage 2 in particular, you will not find it rough in the least bit. Let's put it this way, I'm only 46 but I don't play regularly and the leveling hasn't been difficult at all.

Yes you can advance through solo play. Though I do believe beign part of an active alliance could inject a lot of fun into your play. However, it's is not required.

Sovrath could you suggest a server to play on and possibly any guilds that would be accepting of a new player?

    hmmmm,

Well, when I play I play on triniel. I like it there and there seems to be a decent amount going on.

My suggestion is that if you want to play Elyos then look up "knights of the Divine Order". They are usually in the top 10 or abouts and are a great group of people.

Other top Elyos legions are Haven, Empyreans and Tribe. Sunshine is currently at the top.

For Asmo Flawless and Corvus are usuall at the top but their seem to be mixed feelings about them. However, they are the type of guilds that get things done. My suggestion is Utopian Knights as they seem like a great group of people and are usually in the top 10.

How whether or not they are recruiting is antoher thing though I suspect that Knights of the Divine Order "might" be.

My actual advice is to check out the world forums and see what people are saying about their servers. I have heard that there are servers that have a lot going on and more so than Triinel. So check other world forums and get a feel for the other servers.

Played since launch, ridiculous grind for me. I wouldn mind it if had more quests to do and bit more dungeons to explore. PVP sucks for melee toon during flight battles. Check out AOC if u have time, Expansion pack is out 2morrow. I think it has more to offer to play with and it has good graphic as well and mature people, Well in my server lol. Hope you find a game that will suit you mate.

Ok so I bought it a couple of weeks ago, been playing sporadically due to work and other RL commitments.

Playing a level 20 sorcerer atm, and enjoying it very much. It's not totally different from WoW ofc, but its the little things. I enjoy not being handed everything.

    * Crafting at first was abit overwhelming but after some reading up I find it not too complex but still enough to keep it interesting while not tedious (at this level at least).

    * graphics are just lovely, such a nice change. I dont really care usually I feel very strongly that gameplay>graphics anyday and would never not play a game because of how it looks. But in Aion its a nice bonus for sure =D

    * leveling up to 20 is just a joy. Its still mostly the same standard stuff: kill 10 of those, get one on these etc. But take some time to get into the storyline and its alot more fun then what I'm used to at least. I like the "hard-to-find" quests. I do all quests without any kind of tracker but the "hard-to-find" quests I find is a nice way to keep focus and get some problem solving done. Quest hubs are fairly close and just packed with quests, I've been told it gets worse from around level 25+ but we'll see =)

Its not a review of any kind just some things I feel like mentioning. The way I've been playing I havent grouped even once, so I cant really say how fun my sorc will be in partymode, but I'll find out eventually.

    - one thing that annoys me is when it comes to spells, some spells may say casttime 0 sec (implying they are instacast no?) but you still have to wait for the animation to finish before movement or casting your next spell or whatever. Takes some time to get used to is all.

No idea what endgame is like ofc, but so far comparing Aion with what I played of the AoC trial I made the right choice lol. Even tho I'm positively surprised, there's very little chance this game will keep me from SWtor ;P I'll just enjoy it while it lasts.
