In Aerrevan there are no classes for our characters. We can be a plate wearing Orc if thats our choice. W00t! I've been accepted in their beta and looking forward to seeing a more sandbox like game.
Is this a sarcasm or for real? I think its for real, but then my question is how does "we can be a orc wearing plate armor" have to do with breaking away from the CLASS-system? By your definition WoW breaks away from the classic class system since you can wear plate armor as a orc there too.
well thats not really new either, other games have that too with adding a penalty for wearing heavier armor... and there has to be one or else there would be no point to wear anything but heavy armor like plate if there are only benefits of wearing it.

While its not new, and I agree with your point about penalties, a true Classless system will allow people to be more like Battle Mages than the classic Cloth Squishy
If its done correctly Heavy Armour wearers would have the ability to tank an enemy while using close contact Spells to wreak havoc. Meanwhile Cloth Squishy mages would receive a bonus to their magic abilites (inbued cloth armour etc) that allows them to cast strong spells but unable to sustain a good beating around the head with a Morningstar.
It also means in PvP that the player your going against wont fit any typical 'Archetype' so there is no way of knowing if teh palyer your attacking is actually a Demi-god of Kung Po

while I'm familiar with the idea of that, I also know that usually it pays off more to be one over the other, but I do like atleast the option for variety and if you find a guild that isnt all about you having to be the best possible build and etc then its fun, well anyway if thats what the meaning was behind this threat, that you dont have to be the classical classes and can actually specialize a bit more in how you want to go around building your character then thats always a good thing =]
Itäs too soon to know if itäll be "done correctly" but the race you pick has no limitations on what kind of armour, weapons or spells you use. Sure, there are limitations on how many points you have to distribute in these 3 areas but its up to the player how the character will be designed. An elf mage in plate using swords if you so choose.
That's all well and good but the only thing wrong with the "class" system is that people want something new probably because they're sick of the holy trinity. Furthermore, just because it is classless does not mean that there's not going to be a healer, tank, and dps. That's just the way it goes.

yea like a spell that takes the said morningstar and uses it to beat the weilder around the head
The only thing that scares me from this game is the fact that there is nothing, zip, nada no kind of media showing video of ingame combat, gameplay, npc's or anything to that matter. All i have ever seen are screenshots of terrain nothing else!

They've just finished Alpha and closed beta starts on 28 May so there hasnt been a lot of info released yet. Even though they have enough beta testers already for the first phase of closed beta, you can still signup for beta and you may get a look inside during followup phases.
anyway, I really like this feature and I'll probably be a plate armor wielding longbow using critical burst damage specified elf Can't wait for beta
That's pretty funny considering you don't know what will be in the game other than the races =P
This game appears to have some features that are usually present in sandbox games. Skill system usually goes hand and hand with things such as FFApvp, full loot, and supply/demand player economy. While none of these are game breakers for me, I have to be skeptical. If the combat isn't done properly, it destroys the game. We've seen it from Darkfall and Mortal Online recently. It needs to be like WoW combat. All 3rd person with zooming functions, tab targetting, and hotkeys. I'm interested in seeing what the player animations will look like. That goes a long way when it comes to combat. If combat fails, this game fails. You can have a million great features added, but if the core of the game doesn't work, the game flops. Please get the combat right.
There really isn't a whole lot of information available. I will keep an eye on it though. Change the name of the game too, it's not interesting enough for mainstream attention.
Personally, I prefer these types of games to focus on a first person perspective, but I'm sure this one will go the third person route like all of the others these days. I know all of them give you the option, but very few are designed for first person view (except shooters of course, but that's a different genre). I always played early EQ in first person. I felt it was much more immersive.
I dont yet know how the gameplay will be,. Frtom what the developers have been saying though the pvp will be outstanding and the screenshots show great promise. Im currently in the Beta testing however during beta it will be pvp and everyone will start in the same place. I think the developer said this was for testing purposes. The game WILL be fantastic I garuantee it!
There's nothing that makes a class based system more "classic" than skill and/or ability based ones. All these things are done already countless times in various games (CRPGs, p&p, MMOs). The only system that i know of that was never redone was the original D&D where you could either pick a class to play, *or* a race.

You can be a mage in plate if you want
This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
Aerrevan... what a strange name
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

original D&D hasnt been use?
I don't understand what you mean, cause imo it has been used and reused
Looks like returning to old Ultima Online system is now called "refreshing new classless system"
And yes, ninja wizards!
IZI MODO?! Ha-ha-ha!
