I've been seeing a lot more tablet PCs wandering about lately. I've also noticed that there are a lot of low-end all in one PCs that feature touchscreens without a mouse. And then there's Pocket Lengends.... yeah... The less said about that the better....
My question is aimed at the PC / MMO gaming crowd: What are you going to do when the mouse isn't standard issue anymore? constantly pointing at the screen to adjust the camera isn't really a solution, is it? Click to move is an option, but there are a number of zealots here that believe click to move is a work of the devil. The mouse is on the way out, how are you going to play when it's gone?
BTW: RTS games will probably not be effected by multitouch displays much. It's more than likely that RTS gamers will just reorient the screen to be on the table and keep on truckin'. This is really only an issue for FPS and MMORPG gamers.

When I can't play with a mouse, my time in mmos will be ended. I type poorly and I am too old to chase things to press on a screen with my fingers.

The mouse is not on its way out.
You still need it if you work in 2d and 3d because working with a mouse is more precise (when it comes to pixel-work).
And we will keep the mouse for gaming. At least for several years.
Things die because they're not in demand. And honestly, despite the wonders of touch-screen, I don't think we're in any danger of it replacing the mouse any year soon. I can cover my entire screen width by moving my mouse only a couple inches, which beats the hell out of reaching all over a monitor screen.
Besides, the difference between touchscreen and a mouse is just a matter of drivers. I'd be surprised if the two couldn't coexist pretty easily.

There are too many advantages to using a mouse in the gaming industry. They will be around for a long time. Touch screens, where they are a nice feature and work for tablets, are really just a fad when attached to a stationary PC. I would more than likely never own one because it would drive me nuts having to consantly clean my finger smudges.

Mice aren't going anywhere.
ECGs are still big bulky, unrepsonsive, and generally just hard to use.
In 15-20yrs, when they become extremely useful and small...... then we will start to see the decline of the mouse. They aren't that expensive now, so I don't think that will be a problem.
Right now, the only thing you can do with them is do basic basic commands.... and alot of that comes from different facial movments. The concentration, only sends out one command.
The touch screen is not a competator for a mouse, just an alternative. I hate touch screen personally, I love my iphone, but I don't like it on anything else.

I doubt they will only allow one or the other, it comes down to options, why limit someone with only one option. Even laptops with the touch pad still support using a mouse.
I can garuntee you that whatever replaces the mouse in a few decades will be better and easier.
There is too many things the mouse is used for and touchscreen is widely a casual or consumer-based product. Industry and commercial fronts still shy away from the newer technology unless it improves productivity and decreases cost. Not something I see touchscreen doing.
Fruitless discussion. Neural Impulse Actuator technology is already making touch screen technology as archaic as the humble yet useful mouse.

While I welcome the Idea of Both Screen and Mouse support in games. I Could never loose the mouse W/O a better system to replace it. And Touch screens arnt it.
Id love in say Supcom 2 to be able to Drag the mouse then Tap my monitor to choose the structure and click to place it.
Sure i can use shortcuts. But it would "Feel" more hands on if I could click the tower it self.
Now for games like MMO's It would be less usefull. But could still be nice to just Touch the screen and drag the word over to my toon.... But Both examples are done just fine by the mouse and really I see no need to fix what isent broken.

Maybe something like the Wii controler.
There's a few Wii games that have you doing slash and thrust with the controller to control your weapon onscreen.

Mouse isn't going anywhere. We get this every couple of years: "OMG, touchscreens are going to obliterate the mouse!" Ain't happenin'. Touchscreens will never replace mice because touchscreens are an ergonomic nightmare. Google "gorilla arm". Touchscreens are absolutely unsuitable for extended sessions with a vertical screen. Attempting to relieve the stress on the arms by changing the screen to horizontal gets you severe neck fatigue as you continuously bend over the screen.
The mouse won't go away until they give us direct links to our PC's where we can just "think" what we want them to do.
I think that might be a 'few' years away though.

Another alternative is motion-sensing systems where you don't hold a controller (converse of the Wii), such as portrayed in scenes from Minority Report. Using these, we won't have to reach entirely across the screens, as we do on modern touchscreen systems, but instead can use our hands as pointers over large areas with small gestures.
It's certainly still a thing of the future, but interface researchers are making strides in this direction. I'll buy the idea that this kind of sensor system combined with sophisticated gesture interpretors will replace the mouse. We can do "magic" without the tech of the neural interface.
it has either to be *very* small and local (a surface the size of a mousepad) or it won't work. still, it will mostly be a glorified 3D touchpad...
When the mouse is actually replaced, it will be replaced with a superior input device and nobody will care that it's gone.
Touchpads are not that superior input device -- at least not in their current incarnation.

I agree, The mouse is will be with us till the day we can just hook up to Virtual Worlds thro our Brains and control yourself just like you do right now. I think a anime show had this once forgot the name.
