Winch Gate, the developer and publisher of Ryzom, today announced that their science-fantasy MMO Ryzom is now open source. To that end, Winch Gate has launched the Ryzom Core Development project, which makes available the game's source code including the client, server, and tools as part of the Ryzom Core toolkit.
Players can use the Ryzom Core toolkit to make modifications or enhancements to the existing code, or even develop their own virtual worlds. The most peculiar bit of this news is the fact that Ryzom is, well, still running, oftentimes a game's source code is released when the game has been dead for a long time or is simply quite old. It should be interesting to see what players come up with using these tools, we'll be looking forward to news of your creations!
For more information on Ryzom Core, check out the official FAQ here.

Awesome! i think ill be having a play with this over the next few months
Interesting. Did the devs just give up or something? No new ideas? Or do they need some help? This sounds like a mess waiting to happen.
Well it's all explained the the FAQ linked. Doesn't sound like they're giving up at all.
mm this is a very good news!open source programmer often polish various code that would otherwise would have been left
as is for lack of fund
i wonder what the game will look like in a year .a lot might be surprised by what will be in the game in a year!i sure look forward to it.
wow just wow

Wow! I think it would really take off if the OGRE community started playing around with this code.
Odd... They just ressurected Ryzom. Gave away the game for free for half a year or so. Then started to charge subscriptions, only to make it Open Source within the year..?
Either the game is not profitable or the new dev's don't want to keep working on it...
Well, essentially you are getting the engine not 'Ryzom: the game' so I suppose they want to assure people that it is still running and that this might inject some life into the mmo. From the Free Software Foundation press release....
"If you want to run your own server for the game, you have the software to do that, but you won't really have any world datainformation about geography, special places, characters, quests, items, and so onto run it with. Winch Gate Properties, the company that currently holds the copyright for all game materials and runs the official server, has decided not to release that data, to avoid causing disruption for their current player community. People who want to run their own server will need to develop their own world to do soonly a small test world comes with the code."
"Feature requests for things such as porting to a new operating system, enhancing the 3D engine, etc are relevant to the open source project and will be considered for implementation."
Now that's interesting...
Sensible move IMO from a whole bunch of perspectives, development, good-will etc. If correctly managed I think it could give sound financial returns too.

Ever wondered what a hardcore WoW raider looked like?

heh .. player made missions --> Ryzom Ring (does any other MMO have this kind of feature ??)
now player made patches/content suggestion .. could be a smart move, or it could explode in thier face
I bet many players wil try to use the code to re-create the game into their own game.
Intersting... xD
it has been a week since this tread started look at this guys!

The open source community doesn't screw around. There are many many programmers whose dreams came true when Ryzom went open source.
