Along with AVG and Avast!, I like Avira and MS Security Essentials.

I use Spybot for malware and adware. I can't say i've shopped around to compare it with others, but I've had zero problems. It pops up once a while and tells me someone is trying to install some crap.

I use Avira for anti-virus, and a combination of Spybot and Ad-Aware for malware (I use Ad-Aware's active monitoring instead of Spybot's, but I run sweeps with both). The biggest benefit I've noticed is switching from IE to Firefox, and loading Firefox up with security add-ons like NoScript, Better Privacy, CookieSafe and Adblock Plus. I also use CCleaner to clear out junk files and sweep the registry, but that's just good freeware, not a security program.

avg or avast are good scanners... also dl malaware antimalware and scan with that every once and a while...

if you run a legit copy of ms os!microsoft security essential is a good one been using it for month and it does what it supposed
to.first scan is long but after the initial scan its very quick!
